Practice report

Since I have to work late tonight on HS football, I was not at practice this morning, but I've had a few reports from people who were. EVERYONE was impressed by Brent Henley, and his presence helped pick up the intensity. Because only Nick Boucher and Colin Chaulk are the only ones left who remember Henley, everyone else was wondering just how well a 6-7, 255-pound man was going to be able to get around the ice. They were all quite surprised at the great conditioning Henley has. He even knocked Colin around a few times with some solid checks, and by th.

Here's one predition I'm am absolutely positive about. David Starenky is going to be a 25 percent better hockey player by the end of this season because of Henley. I remember what Henley was able to do to help Matt Syroczynski the first time he was here, and he'll do some of the same things with Starenky who is already a pretty darn good player. I told Brent the other night he had a new little brother, and I hear the two have hit it off already. Kaleigh Schrock will also be a more effective player with someone to watch his back.

As for why the Komets didn't have a super heavyweight before this? It's got to be the right type of player, someone who can skate a regular shift and be good in the locker room. The Mirasty experiment last year didn't work because he could no longer do it. They tried to get Jimmy Bonneau over the summer, and they talked to Henley early in the summer, but neither was available. When Henley became available earlier this week, David Franke called him immediately.

The Komets used to have big guys all the time who could play and fight. Guys like Robin Bawa, Steve Fletcher, Chris McRae, Andre Roy, Chad Cabana, Scott Shaunessy, Kevin MacDonald, Kevin Bertram before he got hurt, Kevin Kotyluk, Jim Logan, Michel Massie, Henley himself and Brad MacMillan.

LOL, RK...we heard that same crap all the time when I played football at Dwenger... Back then they even said we recruited players out of TEXAS!!! Now thats absurd! It was simple really, The Catholics on the north side of town went to Dwenger...the Catholics on the south side of town went to Luers. The only recruiting I ever saw was from the public high school who's area I lived in trying to get myself (and some other good athletes) come play for them....

What it really comes down to is we got better coaching and more discipline from the grade school level on up. We had traditions we believed in and we were taught team first early on...

It always made me laugh back then hearing the big schools cry about an unfair advantage when they normally had twice or three times the amount of students attending their schools...lol They always had as many or more good athletes on their teams; but what they always lacked was the discipline....

Send Dwenger's coach out to Adams Central, Bluffton, Norwell, or Woodlan and if he maintains a similar record after a few years of getting his system in place, Ill buy your argument. I can understand you supporting your school though, Id do the same.

Norwell was a good program back in the day...

What you failed to take from my post was that it wasnt just the coaching at Dwenger...it started at schools like St Vincents, St Charles, Queen of Angels/Precious Blood, etc... That's were the foundation is layed for good teams at the high school level... Change the culture at the grade/middle school level in those area's and it will reflect at the high school level...

Having parents who care enough about their kids to pay to send them to those schools is a major part of it. I didnt fail to understand anything in your post. If you really think the kids Dwenger, Luers, Brebuff, Howe, Roncalli, etc. get are the same as those who typically go through your typical school district, rural or urban, regardless of the age level, youre really out of touch.

Lol...yeah, I'm out of touch; but it seems to me that the same excuses being made today were the same that were made 25 years ago. Its easier to make excuses than it is to change the culture of a program somewhere...

You guys can go back and forth for weeks about Dwenger and Luers but my high school football team was on ESPN a couple times...THE! Elmhurst Trojans...That's right, be jealous

By this reasoning Blackhawk, Concordia, and Canterbury should be up there also.

Luers and Dwenger, and any other Catholic high school in the state that is located in a decent sized town have the advantage of a tremendous feeder system. These kids start playing organized football at what, the fourth grade? If public schools started that, especially with their population base, you would see the same results, probably better.

Enough crying on the high school football talk. Our staff (BD) would go to Northrop and make them an SAC power in 2 years. Disciplined athletes will always beat undisciplined skilled athletes. Let's talk hockey, let's get two points tonight...go K's

Blackhawk is great at baseball, Concordia is great at track, and Canterbury is always killer in soccer. I know it is hard to comprehend, especially for former football players, but there are other sports out there. Certain schools are known for being good at certain sports. Thanks for helping my argument, Steve.

Agreed, Hit. Im done.

Looking forward to the game tonight. Im looking past Henley a bit and want to see if the team has improved at all or not, and if last week was just opening jitters.

Mighty not a real fan, never at games. Private schools cheat, always have always will, score tonight 5-2 as the window closes.

Not to beat a dead horse but Dwenger and Luers do well in football over Concordia, Blackhawk, Canterbury because of the size of enrollments. Concordia is a 2A, Dwenger and Luers are 4 or 5A. I know, Im a cadet grad. Will be watching tonite on Chltv, best I can use. Rooting for 1st goal of season. Texas finally got theirs in the 3rd period last night. As soon as we systematically click, we wont have problems scoring.

Bishop Luers is 2A
