Retired numbers

On another post a debate began about retired numbers, and the possibility of Colin Chaulk someday having his number 91 retired. The old rule was you had to play 10 years and they made exceptions for Steve Fletcher who played seven and one UHL game and for Reggie Primeau at eight years. I think they should stick with 10 years, which means Guy Dupuis would be a possibility and that is all until someone reaches that plateau again.

The Komets' current retired numbers:

5 Terry Pembroke; 6 Lionel Repka; 11 Len Thornson; 12 Reggie Primeau; 16 Eddie Long 18 Robbie Laird; 26 Colin Chin; 30 Robbie Irons; 77 Steve Fletcher. There is also 40 for Bob Chase, 58 for Ken Ullyot and 59 for Colin Lister.

To me, that should be it for a very long time. I'm a purist in that I think you have to go back to playing at least 10 years, and that means Guy Dupuis would be the last one to come up for consideration after this season. Retired numbers should be for exceptional players, and it's supposed to be very hard to achieve.

That's also a reason why the Komets re-started their Hall of Fame, to be able to include everyone else who has made sizeable contributions to the franchise.

What do you think?

As another debate, if the Komets had to name their five greatest players of all-time like is being done now in the Major League Baseball promotion, which five would you pick? That ought to keep you busy all weekend. LOL

Chad and others, face reality. The Komets are not marketing the music to the season ticket holders, they are going after the fans and families that go to 4-5 games a year. That's where they make their actual money, not from the season ticket holders. They already have you, it's everybody else they are trying to attract, especially families. You can moan and gripe about it all you want, but that doesn't change the reality of the situation. They need those families.

I just get tired of it because that situation is not going to change no matter how many times we say the same things over and over about it. We have beaten this horse into dog food.

Larry, have you gotten any potential ideas from the suggestions so far? Anything that rings a bell?

Thanks everyone. I try to be positive. I have wrapped my life around hockey and it has been very good to me over the last 8 seasons going into #9. I enjoy what I do very much and if you all had a job that you really loved and could only do it for 6 months out of the year, you would be bummed too. To show you a little behind the scenes, the Frankes do have suggestions but we have no real playlist of music. They mostly leave it up to my judgement. I have been dj'ing for 20 years now and I try to pick up songs from friends, fans, commercials, movies, and experience and try to give every age group something they would like. And I do appreciate all of the suggestions and I am always working at keeping things fun for the fans. So fans, some night after a game (if you are of age), it would be fun to head to the lounge and just discuss some of the things I could improve on in your eyes and share an adult beverage or 2. I miss being a fan down in the stands so I would like to get your viewpoint. I do value what you have to say or else I wouldn't even ask. Thanks and lets get down to hockey. This heat is killing me!!!

BTW Blake, a personal favorite is Zombie Nation. It starts quick and is in the time alloted due to the quick faceoffs and gives a place for the fans to juump in if they want. A decent fit. Good night.

They played the Van Halen song (hey hey hey) at Flyers games for quite some time, I thought it went over pretty well. I think you need a song that people can chant things to... Ole just didn't work because saying "ole" was like saying "blah". I don't understand all of the stink over our old song. OBVIOUSLY management does allow it to be played. I rememeber before one of the playoff games this past season we played it prior to the other team getting on the ice and the guy that does on ice promotions was getting us to say that they suck. Working in management, you need to stick by your decisions. To allow it "sometimes" is idiotic. If it is "ok" sometimes, then why not do it all the time, fans love it. I have never heard anyone complain at a game. EVER.

Blake, here a couple of questions....

1. Any update on affiliations....are they talking to anyone seriously or has it been just feelers so far ????

2. Bob Chase said Monday morning that the K's will announce Goodwin and Domber this week; but he also hinted that they may have a new (exciting)name for us. Have you heard anything that you can pass along???

Guys, who is this Zombie Nation by? The name doesn't sound familiar and I'd like to listen to it. I also like Thunderstruck.

Hello from Quad cities....home tonight...tried to go through
Nebraska but had awful fires!!

On the music...maybe this is too simplistic but who goes to hockey games to listen to music?? I could personally care less what kind of music is played after a goal is scored. I don't need music to get me pumped up. The truth? How about bringing the organ/keyboard back.
Larry you do a great job with the music and it makes for nice atmosphere. I get a kick out of the sound bytes you play.
But if we need music to be entertained at a hockey game, forget the UFC or wrestling, go to Pierres.

regarding the music Tony, after a game this season I was talking to Guy and he was talking about the crowd getting all fired up. We told him it was because they finally played RR2. He was all smiles and said, well they need to play that more often. He said it really fired the players up. Just in general, certain music can get people excited and more inot the game. No one wants to go to a game and have everybody just sit there quietly and not enjoy it. The right music does help.

I dont know about after a goal, but there are parts of Hollywood Swingin' by Kool and the Gang that would be fun to hear at times. Easy to get in to also.

Nothing new on affiliations, and I really don't expect there to be for a while, possibly into AHL training camps.

I have a pretty good idea on the new name they are talking to, and I think he will be exciting. I'm not going to say who yet.

I went onto the website for Zombie nation at lunch time at home. The site was awful. They actually sing something worth playing at the game?

Right, I'm going to give you guys hints so any competitors can take it from here. He has never played here, and my guess is that you guys have never heard of him, but you'll love him once you see him play. Negotiations are ongoing. Probably next week.

I just watched Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Love Kevin Smith) over the weekend, so how about some Morris Day and the Time! Singing the very appropriate Jungle Love. ``Oh-wee-oh-wee-oh"

C'mon, give it up. Is that perfect or what?
Who's the man? Couldn't you just see Hit and KW doing the dance together after a goal?

- I've been watching U
I think I wanna know ya (know ya)
Said I, I'm a little dangerous
Girl, I'd love 2 show ya (show ya)

My jungle love, yeah
I think I wanna know ya (know ya)

And how about playing some REAL music before the games?

And at a decible level that doesn't rival ROLLING THUNDER from a fleet of B-52's?

Please, no more of this BOOM BOOM BOOM crap that passes for music these days.

How about some BEATLES? By GOD, now THAT was MUSIC. YEAH! YEAH!! YEAH!!!

How about some ROOFTOP SINGERS when a particularly sloppy opponent gets a penalty?

"Walk right in. Sit right down. Daddy let your hair hang down."

Skate, I already play Walk Right In and have been for about 8 years. Also some more Beatles are going to be worked in. The music for warmups is normally requested by the players. It's the least recognizable and that's why I don't play much of it during the actual game. I do keep an eye on what the NHL teams are playing and expand from there.

To answer the rest of you, I'm trying to find a place for my huge collection of Chad and Jeremy, the 101 Strings and Slim Whitman. Yikes!!!!

Oh wee oh wee oh

Are you kidding me? I bet you have heard Jungle Love before but you just don't know it. If you heard it, you'd remember it.

I can't believe it hasn't been played on a regular basis in The Jungle. Great tune and it definitely allows for singing along. After a goal? I don't know. Maybe. But definitely at some point every game.
