Hey, I have stood up for Keith since his day 1 here in Fort Wayne, especially when he was benched in the playoffs.....Sorry to say it but defensively I think he is better than a couple guys that are still with the club.
It sucks he didn't get the money because of a "technicality"

I read above that Francis was reassigned to Las Vegas (ECHL). Is the ECHL considered to be at the same talent level as the CHL or is it a step above? Thanks.

Depends on who you listen to.... Beat writers in the ECHL will call the CHL a step below (like the Elmira writer who wrote about Mirasty getting sent down...); but most know that both leagues are "AA" hockey and on par with each other...

Nevermind, I answered my own question by looking at the roster on Las Vegas I see a great many of them have been drafted by the NHL or played in the AHL. It's definately a step above.

They are both AA leagues. ECHL may have less hitting but you will find just as many call ups to AHL in CHL as you will ECHL and by the way the Komets are the AA team for the Blue Jackets.

The way I had it explained to me ..... the ECHL is the "Elite" Central Hockey League and anyone in the CHL aspires to get to the ECHL much like the ECHL players aspire to get to the AHL. I was told that the CHL is like the elephant graveyard where players at the end of their career go to play whereas the ECHL is where the younger players go to start their career. Looking at our roster (age-wise) this makes sense.

Yet, the ECHL team took two of our cast-offs on their team. I'm not buying this at all. They are both the same AA leagues. This is by no means an 'old' league. So your suggestion would be to get rid of Chaulk, Lardner, Potrosso and other good skill player and go with guys like Musselwhite who is just out of juniors? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
BTW, you are going to see an alignment of these leagues sooner than you think. Maybe even after this year. And it might be noteworthy that Columbus doesn't have a ECHL affiliate only a CHL affiliate which are the Komets. Chirs Francis went to Vegas because he made a terrible mistake in a recent game and wasn't up to speed with the rest of the team.

Okay, so what I did is take two teams the Komets who have an average age of 26 years old and Cincinnati which has an average age of 24 years old. Yep, big difference there. Sorry, but I would put Lardner, Chaulk and PC against any ECHL player and I still think they would be considered some of the best.

No one said the individuals you mention aren't good hockey players, they most certainly are. They just most likely won't be identified to be called up to the AHL. Are they good enough to be? YES. Will they? Likely not. A younger player (Francis) will be called up before these guys.

The ECHL is the lowest rung on the official system. Yes, young players want to be in that league simply because NHL teams don't often look outside their own system for players. But there are a lot of very good players who were never drafted for whatever reason. It's those players who have fallen through the cracks who wind up in the other leagues. And if they can prove themselves, sometimes they get noticed. But if you are asking which league has the best level of play, it's all apples and oranges as far as I'm concerned. The ECHL has a lot of youthful energy, but they don't have the veteran leadership and don't always make the smartest plays. Teams outside the system tend to exhibit smarter, albeit slower play because they have more older, veteran players. Personally, I prefer the latter. When I watched more of the ECHL, I found myself questioning the players dedication to the game. Many would quit the moment they realized they weren't going to make it to the NHL. I have a lot of respect for anyone who laces 'em up and plays hard night in and night out without that fame and fortune carrot dangling in front of them.

just looking a the Transaction page for the CHL and the ECHL. This is by no means scientific but here's what I found ....
Since the start of 01/01/2011 there has been 465 transactions in total in the CHL. Of those 465 transactions, 40 of them involved movement to/fro the AHL. This equates to 8.6% of all Transactions.
Since the start of 01/01/2011 there has been 565 transactions in total in the ECHL. Of those 565 transactions 193 of them involved movement to/fro the AHL. This equates to 34.16% of all Transactions.
Conclusion: Given the data above, a player has a greater chance of, at the very least; being called up/being sent down, from the AHL.

Wendy, not questioning anything you said or your opinion....but isn't the CHL now part of the official "system" now too since we are affiliated with the Blue Jackets, or aren't we considered to be official simply based on that affiliation? Just an honest question, not trying to add to the "which is better" question, I honestly just don't know the answer.

I'm beginning to feel this discussion is turning into a "my dad can beat up your dad" argument. It wasn't intended as that. Can we not simply have a civil discussion? My comments are impartial. With Francis and Musselwhite defecting to the ECHL I thought it would serve for an interesting topic. Some of you guys are very defensive. But then again, that's what one would expect from some of the best fans in minor pro hockey.

Interesting article about Francis. One thing I noticed was that Kromm coached him one year when he was in te WHL.
Darn it, didn't know there was a live blog going on! Was watching the Blackhawks....
