Interesting plan. Perhaps the Memorial Coliseum could be a site for the Big 10 Hockey Tournament.

The Frankes concept of the IHL2 was great...The economy...not so much. In better economic conditions I really think the IHL2 would've had a very good chance at being successful.

No way, Bob, because then I'd have to cover it when nobody went to the games anyway. See 2010 NCAA Hockey Regional. Waste of time.

Actually, the Regionals here were considered a success (except for the complaints about the ice...), the attendance figures were up from the previous venue.
I thought it was great! Seeing the ice without the 300 advertisements was a big plus... The NCAA would make more money and have larger turnouts if they made it more affordable, though...
I would love to see a Big Ten tourney here...

Totally agree GM. Still is a good idea but the finances must be better. Can not have us supporting two or three other teams. Travel costs are eating up minor league teams and common sense must prevail when all the owners in all the AA leagues try to fix the problems. Gonna take a while!

I agree, the concept for the IHL2 was sound; but the implementation was flawed from the get go... 2 of the 6/7 ownership groups being solid is why that venture failed...
Add that to the internet world we live in and reputations got tarnished. This is why if any "new" midwest league were to form, certain owners couldnt be in the lead because of the IHL2 failure. Fans in other cities wouldnt trust it and attendance would drop further causing another failure, IMO......

Blake...do you remember the ticket prices for the 2010 NCAA Regional here? They were ridiculous! I would have really enjoyed going, but I wasn't going to shell out the amount of coin that they wanted. It was insane. I think that was a big problem with the event. If I remember correctly, the first time Notre Dame played here versus Michigan, it was fairly well attended. That was several years ago, so don't hold me to that. I just don't remember it being a bust. If the Big Ten could put a hockey tourney here, I think it could do ok. If the FW area high school hockey clubs could put on some type of showcase in conjunction with it, it could turn into a scouting event for some of these universities as well. There has been some very good high school talent that has run through FW but I think that some of it has gone unnoticed.
JR1...excellent point on all of the advertisements on the ice...it's quite obnoxious! I was watching the Pens-Wings game last night and loved how there were NO advertisements on the ice in the offensive/defensive zones...and only about 4 in the neutral zone. It was quite refreshing. Much better than a huge, hideous, yellow, Hyundai blob and about 20 other things! I really wonder what the players think about it. Does it cause troubles for the goaltenders to focus on the puck? I would almost guess not just because they are so dialed in on the game. But then again, I don't know.

Blake if arenas were available I think all Big 10 schools could support mens and womens hockey. But not all teams have access to NCAA acceptable facilities I doubt IU could play Big 10 hockey at Frank Southern. Nice community rink and fine for a D3 level team but that is about it.

Weren't those tickets pretty crazy as well? I think if they priced them where families could afford to go to an extra game (outside the expected expense of the Komets) most fans would go to see a different type of hockey than they are used to.

I dont remember the ND-MSU game being advertised very well.... I think they just thought people would show up since it was those 2 schools without putting the word out...
I went to the ND-Mich game and the regionals and enjoyed the hockey alot... Kids playing with alot of heart for the name on the front of the jersey and to catch the eyes of scouts made for spirited play. The thing I do remember is, IMO, the college ranks need to go to half shield instead of the full shield/cage on the helmets... Those guys played with thier sticks and elbows high when going in for hits. If they really want to start putting more emphasis on avoiding head shots they should maybe start looking into starting at the collegiate level... These kids have no fear of injuring another player around the head because they are so well protected... Alot of these kids are going straight to the AHL (and sometimes NHL) level when the college season is over and they take thier high elbows with them...

I'm not sure what a "casual" Fort Wayne sports fan is but I'd like to point out that the Tin Caps seem to do OK. The Fort Wayne Fury of the old CBA did OK until Isaiah Thomas got hold of the league. Even indoor football was well attended until all the crap started.
The basketball and indoor football teams lack a sense loyalty because people have been "burned" in the past.

I think Fort Wayne fans crave the stability that the Komets offer. Year in and year out, good teams, same team name , large number of returning players each year etc. The tincaps are doing well out of the gate with a beautiful ballpark, competitive teams and they put on a good promotional show. If this continues you'll see them do well long term.

I would take Division 1 hockey here in the Fort over CHL hockey anyday. The talent is a little less but they play will heart, dedication and speed. Which we never saw in the ihl2 and rarely see the CHL. IMO.

JR1, that's a good point. I know one day Mike and Mike were talking about taking away some of the pads or even taking away part of the face-masks in the NFL in a way of slowing down the players and stopping all the injuries.
