Tailing the Komets

Here's something fun

I wrote a story today about two local guys who are putting together a list of the greatest athletes to wear each number in sports. You can read the story here. If you'd like to vote, you're going to have to pick up the paper.

So why don't we try this survey with the Komets? Some of it will be easy because I know Theresa will flood the blog with No. 91 votes, but also, I don't think anyone else has ever worn No. 91 for the Komets. But who wins No. 12: Carey Lucyk, Ron Leef, Reggie Primeau or someone else? This isn't necessarily about who played the most games

I've got a partial list of numbers different Komets wore at work, and I'll try to post it on Monday, but start amongst yourselves and we'll see how far this goes. Or if it goes at all. LOL. Since we're always accused of being old on this blog, this might be right up our alley.

You might be able to get a head start by looking at our 50th anniversary Komets team.

Yes, you're right; I would vote for Chaulk for #91 and no one but Robbie Laird for #18, even though Terry McDougall (another of my favorites) wore it for awhile. Didn't Dougie originally wear #8? Here's a few other favorites:

#2 - Guy Dupuis
#3 - Terry Thomson
#5 - Terry Pembroke
#6 - Jim Burton
#12 - Ron Leef
#14 - Al Dumba
#15 - Dave Norris
#21 - Steve Salvucci

Gee, am I giving away my age???

Shhhh, Larry! Besides, I can't remember that far back. Maybe we did do this, but I'm counting on you to help stir up some debate over various numbers.

Blake, after this you might want to do a "who was the toughest to wear this number?". There could be all kinds of chaos with that one.

That sounds like fun. Let's add that. I'll do some research tomorrow to come up with some more numbers for you.

What number was Morrency? 55? He was my favorite player the first year I started going to K's game. yes, I know I'm a "pup" in Komets lore, but I always thought he was pretty B.A. and I miss seeing him skate 100 mph each time he'd come onto the ice out of an intermission. On top of that, how many Pasquals do you know who can kick the crap out of someone?

The Kalamazoo schedule for the 2009-2010 ECHL season has been released. For those of you who are quick to criticize the IHL and the idea of playing the same teams over and over: please pay attention to this. The ECHL plays a 72 game schedule. The Kalamazoo Wings play the Cincinnati Cylones 15 times, the Toledo Walleye 13 times, and the Wheeling Nailers 10 times. Doing the simple math, the Wings will play the Cyclones and the Walleye over 31% of the time. If you include the Nailers the percentage will go up to almost 53%. Also, the Kalamazoo Wings will make road trips to Elmira NY, Johnstown PA, Reading Pa, the South Carolina Stingrays, Gwinnett GA, Charlotte NC, and the Florida Everblades. C'mon that has got to be real expensive.

Come on, Alan! I'm sure their DEDICATED fans will make all of those road trips. ;) Kzoo OBVIOUSLY made the right call... I'm glad I am a Komets fan.

True, the part of me that can't tear my eyes off an oncoming train wreck is curious about the continuing misadventures of K-zoo, but I've found that when we talk about them on the blogs, it gives them the mistaken impression that we actually CARE in some way, which of course we don't. So yeah, we should probably just leave them to their follies so as not to confuse them.

KometPA--I am sorry but I can not remember what number John Ferguson had as a Komet. He sure belongs on your list. Along with Alan Chevier, Ric Tabaracci along with Peter Sidorkiewicz & Rick St.Croix great goaltenders each. Don't forget Paul Shmyr a fantastic D-man who played a lot of games as a "Blackhawk".

How many komet goaltenders have gone on to play in the N.H.L.? It seems that back in the day when were were in the AAA I.H.L. that the komets sent quite a few goalies up to the show.
