NHL holds conference on concussions

FYI, Dr. Michael Cusimano is head of the CHL's concussion study, and Dr. Michael Hitchison is Colin Chaulk's brother in law.

TORONTO (AP) — With NHL training camps starting this weekend, the issue of concussions is front and center for a group of doctors, researchers and players who want to educate the public about the potential long-term effects of the brain injury.

A meeting being held Saturday at Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital will also look at the situations under which concussions occur and how they can be prevented, with a focus on teaching young players about the dangers of head trauma and how to better protect themselves.

“There's still an attitude out there that brain injury is like a broken arm,” said neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Cusimano, who helped organize the conference. “We take our brains for granted, and we need to have people realize that you can't take your brain for granted.”

Michael Hutchison, a postdoctoral fellow in injury prevention at St. Michael's, will present findings from a study of almost 200 concussions that occurred among NHL players from the start of the 2007 season to midseason 2010. By analyzing video clips of incidents that led to those brain injuries, Hutchison found that most are caused by direct hits to the head involving actions by other players — predominantly head shots with a shoulder, elbow or gloves. About one in 10 were the result of fights.

The study also showed that forwards incurred more concussions than defensemen and goalies, likely because there are more of them on the ice and

They doing anything locally at the Lutheran sports canlan place for youth hockey and concussions? FWO worked with local football teams on concussion testing, since Lutheran is now involved at canlan it would make great sense for them to do concussion testing on all youth hockey players.

How do you do concussion testing on youth hockey players? You gotta knock one out?

Same way you do for pro hockey players. Have them take the baseline testing so that when they have one, you can track the progress of their recovery. You don't let them play again until they meet the baseline standards again.

BIG NEWS RYAN JORDE RETURNS TO CHL

Chad, the OHL is also putting sensors into the players helmets to detect blows to the head that could result in a concussion. It will alert the trainer who will take the player out of the game to administer a concussion test that the player must pass before the player can return to the game.

Burgee, I coach PAL football here in town and we have started getting training in concussion awareness the last couple years. It really opens your eyes in seeing how important it is to properly identify the initial concussion.

I'm not sure if they are concentrating on basic concussion training for coaches at the youth level of hockey here in town? If they are not and want to get started in some kind of a basic awareness program, let me know and I can steer you towards those who can make it happen.

Wonder if Mr. Jorde found a heart during his trip to the Wizard of Oz?

I heard the Wizard was too scared to meet with Mr. Jorde....

Youth concusions are something they need to take a look at. 20+ years ago when I got knocked around all they did was ask me if I knew what my name was and if I knew where I was. As long as I could figure those things out I was allowed to play.

Jorde...let me add him to my list of those who drank the hatorade... I forgot about him.

I know the area they are trying to get more emphasis on concussion recognition is during practices where there is usually no medical staff present at the youth levels and coaches normally go unchecked. More training is needed and the willingness to act on the signs of a concussion to protect these young players brains.

Its tough for guys like me to leave the 'if your not cross-eyed singing the good ship lollypop, then your fine' old days mentality behind...

Jorde is unique though.... He handed out your 'hatorade' himself with his idiotic statements.

True that.

He dug his own hole.

And when he went to Flint and Muskegon, he was quoted as saying that he only played for himself and he wouldn't fight for teammates. Make comments like that, play with no fire or heart, accept your paycheck skating half-arse....and you deserve any criticism fans give you.

He was the infamous quote that Blake got saying that he wasn't playing well in Fort Wayne because the speed was so much slower here and he is used to faster paced play. You would think that he would dominate if it was slower....but no.

I hope Snuff isn't implying he would like Jorde back here.

FWO has my sons baseline for football, wonder if they could track that across multiple sports, he starts hockey the day after football is over.

He has a couple of friends who are out of football right now because they can't pass the baseline test after recent hits they took.

Hit, I want Jorde back here because I want to see you concus yourself banking your head on every wall in town...KIDDING.

You know there are very very few guys I want to see back here from the last few years.

The concusion thing... without getting into too much of it, I was on the small side. I had parents who thought I was too small and coaches who I had to run through walls through in Football and Hockey to prove I could hang. So when my bell got rung, I spent bathroom breaks puking and trying to get the shaking to stop. I kept my mouth shut because the pressure was on to prove that my lack of size didn't matter (hold the jokes please lol) and because the macho sports thing said they have to cart you off before you stop playing hard.

I don't blame my parents because I know they always worried and if they knew the truth they would have yanked me off the field/ice in a second.

I would not wish the long term issues the knocks to my head have caused me on anyone. I don't care if you are a 12 year old kid or Sidney Crosby... nothing is worth it

Thanks for the answers. Wasn't sure exactly how concussion testing was done. I do know from experience the nature of a concussion. As I had one once from a jet ski accident. Caused me to lose my hearing for 5 months. Would never wish that on anyone.

Here's a comment from a hockey fan from across the pond where Jorde has played the last couple years...lol

Sound familiar???

"He played for us in the EIHL about in the 2009/10 season........ absolute rubbish, troubel with him he is no where near as good as he thinks he is. He was sacked by Hull after "off ice activities.......!" came back and signed for Newcastle, got some right stick when he came back for another team !

Won't fight, wont check and is very lazy....enjoy ! "

It's because he was asking people to fight, and they were afraid.

Or was it that he said he played for himself and no one else and he doesn't fight for teammates? He said this in Flint and Muskegon.

Or was it because the game was too slow in the AA leagues and his game is more suited for fast paced NHL/AHL?

I just know the guy came her 2 or 3 different tours and was the same guy that didn't show much fight or effort and was ok with floating while here.

I would take Colin Chaulk on my team anyday any year even if he was 50, because you know the guy will give his heart and soul and he will get every ounce of talent he has left to help his team win.

Not guys like Jorde.

JR1, would you send the concussion training info to me through Blake? I can get it to the coaching staff for my son's level at Lutheran Health Sports. I know I'd like for him to be baseline tested, but don't hoenstly know the first thing about it. I probably should really look into it. They do teach "heads up" hockey, at least the good coaches do, and my son has been fortunate to have had 3 or 4 really outstanding coaches out of the time he has been skating (not very long, this is only his 3rd full season playing). Most all of them have been outstanding. Last season's coach was also a high school coach, so he was one of the best we have ever had, and he was very safety conscious, even gave the kids handouts about how to crash into a wall and said it was "homework", then quizzed them on it the next week! I was impressed. They need to know this sort of thing, even at a young age.
