Hmmm. I'll be interested to see how they plan to define it then. Sounds like another instance of trying to skirt the issue, and looking rather ridiculous doing it. They don't want to ban all hits to the head because that would open the door to someone pointing out the obvious -- that fighting is basically just blows to the head. Unless Alexander Semin is one of the of the combatants. Bongos, anyone?
After watching last night's Vancouver/Boston game, I can come to only one conclusion -- that Dr. Evil is a Bruins fan and slipped a drug into the Canucks' water bottles to make them think they were all back in Pee-Wee. Bob Brown noted that they looked like the Komets circa October/November 2010. Yup. That bad. If you need more proof that the hockey gods are sending us omens about this series, check out this headline I just saw in the news.

What they are saying is that you will never be able to take all hits to the head out of hockey... There are accidental hits to the head that will always be there due to the fact that its a contact sport that do not deserve to be punished under this rule. They are just opening up the rule to encompass more hits that are targeting the head; but are not considered a blindside hit...
I dont believe they are looking ridiculous at all by opening up the range of this rule. They are saying they have identified an area in which to improve this rule and are trying to do so...
I think the main culprit to the increased amounts of dangerous plays, especially hits targeting the head, is a direct result of the players lack of respect for each other and the subsequent way they are playing the game today... Players wait for the league to send a message when they should be doing it themselves. Get rid of the instigator rule and make these guys accountable for these questionable hits when they deliver them.

I'd still like to see any high sticking penalty be a five-minute major. Force the players to control their sticks no matter what. How radical is that? There's simply no explanation for having your stick up too high.

I see where your coming from Blake..Makes sense but a 5 min. major is steep. Maybe a double minor would hurt just as much put after the first goal your back to 2 minutes score again and he's out. I think that might be a little more fair. Just thinking and typing out loud!
Sad deal for the Mudbugs, at least they won the cup.

I find it interesting that Blake would like to see a harsher (5 min. major ) penalty for hits to the head. While thinking that over, it reminded me of something I've stated before regarding penalties.
I would like to see minor penalties served for the entire two minutes regardless of the number of goals scored. I would like to see a rule that states the penalized team cannot "ice" the puck until after it has been cleared from their own zone.
I believe it would increase scoring, add more excitement, and certainly add to the disadvantage of the offending team.
I would ask that before you scoff at these suggestions, take a minute to think them over. Also be aware that many years ago the NHL made the penalized team skate shorthanded for the entire two minutes. Making the team cross their blue line before dumping the puck is totally my idea.

I forgot to post that Pat Bingham has been named the new head coach of the Elmira Jackals.
I thought Pat Bingham was a "breath of fresh air" after the Greg Puhalski era. I found that Puhalski's style to be boring and felt that many players would not even consider playing here because of his personality.
Bingham to Elmira. Can Pascal Morency be far behind?

Alan...High sticking penalties now can either be a minor (2min)or a dbl minor (4min) up tp a 5 min major. Depending on how bad the infraction can also have a game misconduct tacked on. My line of thinking is a minor infraction (2 min) and the team scores a PP goal is plenty of penalty. If they score on the 1st. penalty they have whatever time reduced to another 2 minutes. The time does not reduce on a major. I think the rule on head shots could be applied the very same way. One goal on a PP (Minor Power Play) is stiff enough I think. I am not sure making the team get out of their offensive zone in order to ice the puck would work very well. I see your point however. Linesmen have problems getting it right as it is. I don't think making it more complicated makes it any easier or better. Remember they already move the face-off to the offensive zone to re-start play after the penalty.

Good afternoon Dschebig. How are you my friend? Yep, I'm aware of the rules and stuff. Just thought I'd throw it out for some consideration. Just trying to add some more action to the game, maybe increase scoring by actually making the minor penalties even more severe. I totally agree that officials have enough "judgement" calls and don't need too may more. I'm not sure I'm totally convinced that my "new rules" are not worth trying, but I promise to give it more thought.
By the way, I have suggested in the recent past that the K's sign Todd Robinson. Blake responded that he thought Evansville would be a better fit for him because of his relationships with players on that team. I rejected it then, and feel I am even more correct now, as Jeff Nelson has announced his retirement.
He was a heckova hockey player with Muskegon. He was a league MVP. I feel he was a much more "complete" hockey player than Todd Robinson and Robin Bouchard (even though they seemed to have attracted more headlines).

I never said either of those things, Alan.
I said I'd like to see all high sticking penalties be majors. That would clean up the game a lot. I also never said I thought Evansville would be a better fit. I just said the Komets may have to compete against Evansville with Robinson because of his previous ties there. Let's face it, players go to situations where they are familiar nine times out of 10. This may be the one time out of 10. I do not know what his thinking is, I was just judging off what most players have done in the past.
I also like your idea of serving the full two minutes.

Regarding the headshots, I'm just saying that there will always be confusion and subsequent anger from fans and teammates if any shots to the head are still allowed. Heck, people will fume if a player is hit in a completely legal manner but manages to hit his head on a stanchion or the ice and gets a severe concussion as a result. If a guy doesn't see it coming, at what point do you draw the line and say that he should have? It's just something that will always be a contentious issue.

Sorry if I misunderstood your meaning, Blake. Still, I'm not sure what ties he has there to make it a better "fit". Kronk is the Coach, sure enough, but most everything else has changed. Different owner, not very many former Muskegon players on the roster (less with Nelson gone), different city, and he requested and was allowed to negotiate with Odessa when it was announced Muskegon was going to juniors.
My thinking is that for a player in that situation money and stability would be the most important things. ( I do believe it will help Evansville to attract players by opening their new building, though).

The league, the media and the teams themselves have made this current climate of scrutinizing every hit and it has worked itself into the fan base as well... Its the 'sqeaky wheel gets the grease syndrome' and its not going away anytime soon. Its also 100x worse when it involves a star player. Hockey is my favorite sport; but it also is the worst when it comes to disciplinary action...theres no rhyme or reason to anything they hand out...
When did it go from 'he should have had his head up going thru the zone' to 'you cant hit a guy when hes not looking coming thru the zone'????? These used to be hockey plays; but now they are inhuman acts made by terrible people by hitting a vulnerable player (blindside)...
I read a good article not too long ago that had comments from a long time coach (if I remember right) and its his opinion that the biggest blame for the increased amount of consussions in the league these days are the obstruction rules that where made to promote more scoring. He said that players are no longer able to slow up attacking players without the puck coming into the zone and this allows players to gain alot more momentum before making contact with the other player, making the collisions more violent. He also said that the advances in equipment have added to the increased injuries as well because all the 'give' in equipment has been engineered out. Add that to players being bigger and stronger these days and that equals alot more concussions. I couldnt agree more with that article.
The idea I would like to see them try (and its been poo-poo'd here) is going to Olympic size ice for all NHL arenas... Give these monsters more room.

Pat Bingham in Elmira. Steve Martinson in Chicago. Too bad the Komets can't face them coaches in the ECHL. That would be fun.
Speaking of the ECHL, I saw where there was something like 6 former ECHL players playing in the Stanley Cup Finals including Alex Burrows with Vancouver and Michael Ryder, Rich Peverley and Tim Thomas with Boston. I don't see the CHL getting this kind of talent.
Maybe next year when the IHL/CHL deal is over the Komets will finally join the ECHL.
