Roy Chin passes

Long-time local hockey official Roy Chin passed away at his home Thursday afternoon following a prolonged battled with cancer. He was 74.

After a 49-year career as an official, Chin retired last summer. He is survived by his five sons, including former Komet great Colin Chin, and 10 grandchildren. Services have not been determined at this time.

I think I broke this story before you.

You're way out of line. How childish can you be, taking credit for something like this? Get out of here before I say something I'll regret later. Roy meant much more to me as a friend, and not some stinking competition.

Very out of line HO...

Condolences to the Chin family...kind of ironic that Roy passes around the same time McMillen Ice Arena is going away (in the sense that we know it). I'm going to miss his jokes and smile. Couldn't have met a nicer man...It's too bad the final time I got to see him was the officiating clinic in September...

I'm glad he's done suffering however...rest in peace Roy!

I just got home and Kathleen informed me about Roy.

Not only did we lose a great friend, but a member of my family. Rest in Peace, Roy. You're in a much better place now, no more pain to endure and now you can be with Sidnette again in Heaven.

So sad! What a nice man. His contributions to Fort Wayne go way beyond just hockey. Someone will take his place but know one will replace him. My prayers our with the Chin family in their time of need. I am sure they know he is a better place and pain free. God's speed Roy Chin.

How sad. I didn't know the man, but I remember reading an article about him last year, and I was very moved by not just his battle with cancer, but his life as a whole. He will be greatly missed. :(

And Blake, go easy on HO. I know that you and all who knew Roy are hurting right now, but I don't think HO meant any disrespect.

My heart is so heavy at hearing about Roy! He was the type of person that made this crazy world better. Since we all must make this journey at some time I can only hope and pray that I will be able to see him again in a much better place. To the entire Chin family our thoughts and prayers are with you all at his time. God bless you Roy!!!

My deepest condolences go out to the entire Chin Family. I vividly remember the article Wendy is referencing, and I too was deeply moved. I cannot begin to imagine the number of lives Roy has affected with his countless hours of service to the youth of Northeast Indiana. Roy you will be greatly missed.

Wow, I haven't felt the need to post in over a year but this one hurts. Folks in my profession even up here knew of Mr. Chin. I can't tell you how many times in talking with fellow officials when I have brought up the Komets how they knew that Mr. Chin had a connection to the team and city. I never had the opportunity to meet him but from everything I have been told over the years, we stripes have lost not only a great official but an even better teacher and human being.

I imagine it's going to be one hell of a good wake sometime, and the procession may be one of the longest Fort Wayne has seen in a long, long time. I'm also sure Sid is still kicking his butt up there for some of the decisions he made the last three years. Roy probably hasn't gotten a word in yet! LOL. God Bless, Roy and Sid. You were a positive influence on more people than you can ever possibly know and you still are through your children and all of your proteges.

I'm SO sorry as Roy was a close friend. I worked with Roy for 10 years as the manager for Northside H.S. and after that as the director of the H. S. League also I knew him way before as a friend as my son grew up in the different levels of hockey. Thank You for everything Roy you will be missed by many.

Roy was alot of fun to be around he will be missed. The lives of our youth affected by him are I am sure way too many to mention. He was always teaching and getting you to laugh. Even though I never played or had a child who played I watched, and it was very obvious the respect when he was on the ice. My prayers are with Colin and his family. Roy prolly already has God laughing, lol.

It is a sad day in Fort Wayne. Our dear friend has gone to be with Sid. I will miss him very much. He was like a father to my son after my son's dad passed away. Peace be with you Roy.

Roy Chin was the standard all hockey officials should live by. I was lucky enough to have known him since I started in the Mite program at the age of 8 and always enjoyed having him as an official at one of my games. I'll remember him always smiling, cracking jokes with players and I respected him more than any other official I ran across. He called the game fair and never once made himself bigger than the game, but he made the youth game in Fort Wayne bigger because of his presence and influence. Hopefully when the new rinks are built out north this fall, the powers that be will see fit to name one of the rinks in his honor. Thanks Roy for all that you did for the kids that grew up playing hockey in Fort Wayne. You were the pinnacle here, and now you're on the top of that mountain elsewhere. RIP

Roy was a hoot - always with a bad joke, and always funny. My family saved up jokes to share with Roy the next time we saw him at the rink. He didn't take himself too seriously either. One thing he did take seriously was his heart-felt belief that hockey was an activity that brought families together, and he was right.

Anybody remember any of Roy's jokes in particular that we could hear? And please remember this is a family forum so that immediately cuts down the possibilities. LOL.

One of my favorite Roy stories: A few years ago, 1988 I think, USA Hockey was celebrating its 50th anniversary and the officials all wore a 50 patch. Roy goes to drop the faceoff to start a kids' game, and one of the centers looks up and says, "Have you been a referee for 50 years?" Because he started laughing so hard, Roy couldn't drop the puck.

It's kind of hard to remember Roy's jokes. I was usually blushing, groaning and hanging my head too much to remember.

I'm so sorry to hear of Roy's passing. My deepest sympathies go out to the entire Chin family.

I can remember Roy stepping in to officiate games when the scheduled officials couldn't get here or someone got hurt during a game. I've also always heard great things about what he did for hockey kids and their families. He will be greatly missed by all.

Not exactly a joke but a story about when one of his grand kids was born. He brought a picture over to show some people that sat in front of me a picture. The little guys hands were above his head with his fists closed so Roy said he was going to be a defenseman.

As a 15 year old @ McMillen (outside) I remember when Roy could not skate. Colin (5) & Todd (4) would skate with me between public session periods and play with their sticks and pucks. Sid would stay inside and stay warm. Roy skated @ resivoir park and people would mistake him for Billy LeCane a Port Huron tough guy. Roy loved that. What a great family I had the pleasure to be associated with. I coached Randy and Rod in travel hockey and we had some great times. The kids were all very well mannered and always gentelman. I'll miss Roy and that smile on his face because it always ended up on mine. Randy Marcom
