Tom Crean? Are you kidding me?

Congratulations to Bob Chase for FINALLY getting a Red Coat from the Mad Anthonys after 15 years of suggestions, but he has to share the stage with Tom Crean? Seriously, what has he done to merit such an award? Maybe in five years or so. How bad does this look when Matt Painter, who by the way used to live in Fort Wayne, is still playing in the tournament and has a co-Big Ten title this year? How about Mike Emrick, who recently had 28 million people listening to him call the Olympics and just happens to be the best in the world at what he does? Or Jeff Rekeweg who just won a national title at Saint Francis? Or Al Sims who has three straight titles here on his resume?

Crean may be a great guy, and he does a lot for charity, but I don't even think he plays golf. He hasn't even come close to breaking .500. How about we wait until he's actually done something, which I think he's going to do quite well at IU eventually.

If they waited a week, you'd think this was an... Well, you can figure it out.

Because this is an IU town, not a town where you....nevermind

I totally understand that, but then lets bring the soccer coach up or a Red Coat or at least somebody who has a winning record. I could care less about IU or Purdue, but if I was a Purdue fan seeing this, I'd lose my mind on it.

Blake, as a Purdue fan I'm used to my team not getting anything. Like the Burg said, it's an IU town and IU people have on crimson glasses, which are far more distorting than any orange glasses, and they will mindlessly follow anything IU, no matter how badly it sucks. Oh, and every year they have "one of the top recruiting classes coming in."

Someone has written on here constantly that sports are all about entertainment and making money. This is one case in which he would be much better off pointing it out as opposed to asking a question about it. You knew the answer to this question before you started typing it out.

Hahaha... Congrats Coach Crean, you use the most tanning lotion in the state of Indiana!! And seriously nice job on winning 16 games in 2 years... And... well i dont really have to keep going because lets be serious, it's IU... BOILER UP!! It's also too bad Chase has 50 plus years put next to a guy with 2...

And as long as he's coaching at IU he can get a head start on golf every March...

Blake - You are right on the mark. It is about time for Chaser to be honored with a Red Coat and it would have been great to pair him up with Mike Emrick but the honchos with the Crimson glasses probably have no clue. And YES, Matt Painter is far more deserving than Crean at this time.

Why don't they give Mike Franke a redcoat?

People don't show up to see soccer coaches..

Shelley Long, Jarad Fogle (the subway dork), Jason Fabini, and Jim Harbaugh have all gotten the redcoat... Is Crean really that far-fetched?

I'll go just to see John Daly.

Well if Obama can win the Nobel Peace Prize for doing nothing, why cant Crean win the Red Coat? lol

Congrats Bob Chase YOU deserve it.

Bob Chase is just an outstanding selection. Mike Emrick would have been a terrific selection also. The way their two careers have been intertwined (sp?) would have made the day even more meaningful.

I'm not sure but isn't the event June 13th? I bet that the committee may have given some thought to Mike Emrick, but doesn't the NHL playoffs go beyond the 13th of June?

If this is an IU town, I haven't heard much about their junior college basketball team lately. It's a joke that this guy is getting a red coat, and being allowed to even sit near Chase.

Blake, why do I have a feeling that you're "pushing buttons" again? I mean if one wants to get a large number of blog "hits", pitting IU and Purdue fans against each other should do it. LOL.

Changing the subject just a bit.

The Komets start a very important weekend on Friday night. Playing at Muskegon I'm thinking that Al Sims will start Nick Boucher in goal. I'm hoping that the K's are inspired to play, not only because it is a "four point" night against the only team ahead of them, but also because of the disappointing loss to Muskegon at home last weekend. Then, I believe they will come back to Fort Wayne, spend the night at home, and then travel to Dayton on Saturday. Who is the goaltender for that game? Probably Haun, but maybe Boucher again. Then they come back to Fort Wayne, spend the night, and travel to Flint for a 4pm game on Sunday. Whoever didn't goaltend against Dayton should be in the nets on Sunday. (Three games in three days with all of that traveling kind of dictates using both goaltenders this weekend.)

In my opinion, they should be ready for Muskegon, probably shouldn't have a huge problem with Dayton, but I am real concerned about Flint. The game starts early and the K's have had a lot of "bus miles" by then, and besides, Flint has really improved this year and had the entire week off. They have the ability to put the puck in the net and can score in bunches. Saying all this means, that probably, I will be completely wrong.

Al Sims will make the correct call on the goaltending, as I think the goaltending will go a long way in dertermining the outcome of the weekend games. Especially in Flint where they go up against a fresh team with a tired one.

They are not coming back to Fort Wayne between the Dayton and Flint games.

I don't see that as an IU or Purdue issue at all.

The greater majority of people in Fort Wayne have no idea who Mike Emrick is, that's probably a big reason for him not getting one when the goal of this thing is to have names people recognize to get them to come out and bring in money.

it all comes down anymore to who they can get that will sell the most tickets. back in the old days when "A" list celebrities populated the red coat, the award always went to a true celebrity that represented the state of indiana but now since most of those have died off and the format of the tourney itself has changed, the people who will draw bodies are now the celebs! sad how sometimes things change.

Bob Chase was at the very first meeting when the Mad Anthony Red Coats organized. He may be one of if not the most deserving individual to ever get the Honored "Red Coat".

Congratulations Mr. Bob Chase!

I agree with everyone else about Tom Crean and I am a IU fan. I am hoping Purdue whips Duke but not holding my breath.

If this was a perfect world Mike Emerick would have been the perfect pick. But, sad to say it's not a perfect world.

Hey Blake, did something change? The reason I thought they were coming back to Fort Wayne after each game was because you stated on "Inside the Zone-March 22nd" this comment. You stated "the nice thing is they will be sleeping in their own bed each night." If they do stay in Dayton, that sure would help.

If you are going to give awards almost no one I know has ever even heard of to people who have no real reason to be getting it, why not give one to Charlie Weiss as a parting gift. As we all know IU basketball fans are ND football fans because of course we have to be front runners, well used to be front runners.

No fair, Alan, using my own words against me!

Things changed. They will not have any access to their locker room or facilities like washers and dryers during the NCAA Tournament, so they figured they'd just stay on the road and get some extra sleep at the hotel.

The mad anthony's just isnt what it used to be. Ill go to support Chaser though and maybe have a beer with John Daly.

The Komets play their biggest game of the year friday night, it will be a 4 pointer and the winner will more than likely win home ice for the playoffs.

Blake, actually I'm glad things did change. I feel they have a much better chance at Flint by not having the extra travel. By the way, I guess this shows you that people really do pay attention to what you say. LOL!!

How about those Butler Bulldogs????

How huge would it be if they win their next game and go to the Final Four in Indy?

That would be a fairy-tale type of story that movies are made of.

Go Butler!!!

Rick

Hit, Butler in Indy would be huge, but imagine both Butler and Purdue there. Now that is a real stretch, but the way it's gone this year, I can dream. I guess you can throw OSU or MSU in the mix and make it a bigger dream. I am going to the NCAA regional this weekend so I will have some catching up to do with replay of NCAA basketball regional finals.
