Interesting perspective and well said although in the world I grew up in one "read" books and "looked at" comic books.
As one who goes back to direct dial BBSs and pre-internet days I have strong opinions about changes I've seen in the "on line" world and its users but I'm certainly not going to get into them here. For one thing I just don't feel like typing that much. :-)
My primary hobby is photography and one of the sites I'm active on has been around for some time, started at MIT and pre-digital. Most people on there use their real names. A shift to more negativity and less helpful discussion is a topic getting kicked around now in one of the forums. Interesting.
That was very interesting, Blake. To be honest with you I read it four times. I think it shows that there are many paths one can travel and only one is the wrong one. He uses the comic book convention (insert your own example here) as the vehicle for his thesis.

There are those in the world who seem to thrive being that way. They are to be pitied as that seems to be a life that is bankrupt of feeling and, most assuredly, can only lead down the path of sadness, lonliness, and eventually anguish.
The word "negative" has been thrown a lot around here this hockey season. As individuals we sometimes differ what is "negative" and what some may call "constructive dialogue", "tough love", or just plain being "frank."
I can only speak for myself. I know that my feeling is that honest conversation that remains respectable amongst the participants is a healthy exercise. It is meant to share the opinions of differing points of view, not to dominate in any form. Depending on the point of view, I am either "negative" or "positive". The true definition actually rests with the reader of my words. Some agree, others don't and that is perfect.
We are Komet fans. As such, most of us have some investment in the hockey team. Each and every one of us. Sometimes the investment takes the shape of time and money. Some have more of their lives interlocked with the Komets, some have less. We write through an anonymity that is a by-product of the internet. The system is what it is.
My hope is that we can continue to have fun, frank discussions without worrying about the labels that seem to become attached. If I am wrong about something, please, please, convince me through facts that I am in error and I will change my thinking. Change can be a terrific thing!
Now I will CHANGE the subject and send a shout out to all of you bloggers and Blake. Let's get together and cheer our hockey team on this playoff year!!!
All I know is that when I was a teenager and just getting into the Komets and then thru my early college years ('90-'96) those were some awesome times. The internet was around but it was dial up and I used it to check boxscores and such.
The only thing I knew of the players and the team was what I saw in action and from the newspaper and TV. Like the article said there's something good about being a little ignorant of all information.
I just don't see the need to have to hang outside the locker room and know every little thing about what the players do off the ice and how nice they are or not nice. My friends and I talked about what the team could do to get better, etc. But, no need to know the ins and outs of the business side, which teams were struggling, which teams didn't have pucks at practice, etc.
It was just simply fun to show up, be entertained by the game on the ice and go home to do something else until the next game.
The internet isn't going away and you can't change how it affects things. But, yeah I agree it's a shame that there's just too much information out there.
Heroes can't be heroes anymore. Now you know who they're sleeping with and which way they lean politically. They're human now....just like they always were but we just didn't know it then. And that was fine.

If only the world was a perfect place. And too bad that we all couldn't just agree on everything. Then there would be no worries, no names being called, and no articles like this.
