Tailing the Komets

Starenky signing with Toledo

The Komets' rekindled rivalry with Toledo may be heating up in a hurry.

The Walleye have signed physical defenseman David Starenky who played with the Komets last year. Starenky, 26, played 49 games with the Komets last season earning one goal and seven points along with 137 penalty minutes in 49 games during the regular season. He saw limited but effective time during six playoff games with two assists and 18 penalty minutes.

This bites but i dont think sims liked the penalties he took. Another player down to give more money to magio.

First Molle and Starenky the toughness from last year is going out the window. Honestly thought David was one the better Dmen we had at the end of the year. Lost another quality Dman there

He didn't get enough ice time here, we will look back and recognize the mistake in letting him go. Don't blame him, who wants to sit?

It's always tough to see a player who some felt as a fan favorite leave.

Realistically, though, I'm not surprised at all.

Starenky just never seemed to fit in as a defenseman on a team coached by Al Sims.  He was a niche player.  He was a player who fit a certain role ( toughness).  He took some  bad penalties at crucial times ( so did others, I know.  Others that should know better but were easier to look past due to their contributions in important areas).

I am surprised that the Komets lost Bryant Molle.  Since Molle left, and we read that the only other defenseman to be offered a contract was Frankie DeAngelis, what does that mean for Dustin Molle? What does it mean for Maggio?

There are so many questions surrounding the Komets that we need to take a step back and have faith that the Franke's and Sims know what they are doing.  They are the only ones who know what players they are talking to, not us ( or most of us).  For my part, Vaskivuo is the only player so far, that I wanted to see back here and left.

I have my favorites, both Komets and opponents, that I think would be great fits in the ECHL.  None of those have signed elsewhere ( as of today) either.

I hope Boucher and the Komets are real careful about his hip surgery.  My decision would be to have him get it done now and start the healing process.  You don't want to see your #1 gaoltender go down during the middle of the season when it would be much harder to replace him.  Ultimately it is Boucher's decision ( as it should be) as it is his hips, his future, and his recovery and rehabilitation.  My opinion is totally and selfishly based on creating the strongest hockey team possible for the upcoming season.

I hope Starenky finds success with Toledo.  The Toledo coach has found some criticism among his fan base of his teams not being tough enough.  Well they found a tough guy here.  For Starenky's sake, lets hope he catches on with Toledo, has a nice season ( just not against the Komets)!

It seems to be a very interesting off-season this year K land.

It is always an interesting off-season for the K's Frodawg....some of us fans would not have it any other way. There are so many things that are going on that the regular Komet fantic do not see or hear about until the signature is on the line, which is why any sport off-season, in general, is so interesting! I am excited for the changes, although I am sad with some of the departures, I believe the Frankes are doing the job they need to do to put a great team on the ice.

Is it hockey season yet???

He could hardly break the CHL roster, no way was he going to be a regular contributor on an ECHL roster. A medicore defenseman who is willing to drop the gloves and be an average fighter shouldn't be too hard to replace. I'll be shocked (but happy) if he's on the Walleye's opening night roster. I'd gladly take Riley Emmerson who skated in Toledo last year in place of Starenky.

A guy being a "fan favorite" because he spends so much time in the seats with the fans isn't a good thing, folks.

I liked Starenky's attitude and toughness, but he wasn't one of our better hockey skilled defensmen. I also thought he made some poor choices in the title run last year. I do hope he makes it in Toledo, but not sure he has the skating ability to make it in the ECHL. Joining the ECHL limits the number of veterans that the Komets can sign and guys like Bryant Molle, while not classified as a veteran, surely demanded a nice rewarding salary that he deserved. The CHL will pay him more than the ECHL. I will miss him as well, but again a casualty of business. Go Komets!!
