Quite frankly I am very happy that the NHL lockout has been resolved.
For three and a half months we have been a member of the ECHL. Except it was never really the ECHL. It was an ECHL that was immersed by AHL players. Some teams had no affiliations, some had one affiliation, and some had two. I could never quite tell what I was watching or how well this edition of the Fort Wayne Komets was put together. Now, pro or con, good or bad, it will finally be revealed. I'm all for it.
I know that Kalamazoo is affiliated with the Blackhawks ( but I'm not sure if there is another with them). The other three in the division are linked with two affiliations each. Common sense and reason would tell us that they stand to lose more ( or at least as much due to call-ups than the Komets). All the Franke's work and roster strategy in the offseason may now come to fruition.
I must be honest and admit to how impressed I've been with the goaltending in this league. The Komets are well positioned with the goalies on the roster plus the ability to re-sign Bouch. Even if two are recalled, they can survive this period of player uncertainty. This brings up an important matter.
The front office must continue to scour every means and opportunity to improve the roster. That will be a common denominator for each team, so the front office will need to use every means, use all of their contacts, and reputation to fill out and improve the team. Some teams may be decimated by the lockout ending.
It will be quite interesting to watch and see the skill the Franke's use to replace those spots lost.
Speaking only of forwards now, I would like to thank Josh Brittain for his play in Fort Wayne, I would like to thank Corey Elkins for his steller play also. Corey Elkins is probably the the most talented player on a Komets roster in quite a while. Speed, great with the ouck, fantastic on face-offs, and great "hands". They both came to Fort Wayne to play. And play they did!
I'm still not the biggest believer in the defense, but with Nick Schaus, it has improved.
Those are my thoughts. Looking forward to the rest of the season as we embark on a totally different ride than we've been on so far.
