The Stockton Thunder (@StocktonThunder), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League, has acquired the ECHL contract rights to rookie defenseman Mathieu Gagnon from the Fort Wayne Komets in exchange for future considerations, head coach and director of hockey operations Rich Kromm announced today.
Gagnon, 20, made his ECHL debut in Fort Wayne last season, collecting an assist and 22 penalty minutes in six games.
Gagnon comes off a four year career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with Shawinigan and Victoriaville, where he skated in 121 career games, notching 19 points (4g-15a), a +17 rating and 228 penalty minutes. He helped guide Shawinigan to a Memorial Cup title in 2011-12 with seven points in 42 games and additionally skated in six playoff games.
The 6-foot-2, 216 pound defenseman also skated with Whitecourt of the Alberta Junior Hockey League last season where he served as an alternate captain, picking up 19 points and 259 penalty minutes in 35 games.
Gagnon agreed to terms on a minor league two-way (AHL/ECHL) contract with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Aug. 2 of this year. Bridgeport is the AHL affiliate of the Thunder and Islanders.

Cool, now we got to wait and see until Stockton is allowed to report what, who we get.
there goes our only legitimate heavyweight
Huge blow for the Blue Troops lost proven toughness with that one.
fAIR TRADE FOR BOTH SIDES. wE TRADE A LITTLE TOUGHNESS FOR A PREMERE GOALIE. A tough goalie is going to carry us a lot farther than a tough rookie d-man.
Expect that Gagnon will be called up to AHL.
I'm a little dizzy trying to figure this thing out. Now Ron's comment has me a little confused, too.
Stockton sends Reichard to Florida for "future considerations" last year, but Reichard doesn't play a game for Florida as he gets sent up to Houston of the AHL.
Florida sends Reichard to Fort Wayne for "future considerations".
Fort Wayne sends Gagnon to Stockton for "future considerations".
Will Fort Wayne send the "future considerations" owed to them by Stockton to Florida to satisfy the "future considerations" owed to them by Fort Wayne?
Ron, it may in fact, turn out that Gagnon was exchanged for Reichard but not straight up.
By the way, congratulations to both Adamson and Boucher. McDougall was a great player and he should be recognized also. Hopefully a Chaulk announcement will be made sooner rather than later.
Not sure Alan. I'm assuming it was goalie for a D-man or at least thats where my mindset was with my comment. Now you have me wondering. lol !
I do not like losing Gagnon.....
This trade has nothing to do with the other two future considerations trades.
I'm guessing Bridgeport foreced this issue. Why would they want a player on a 2way not playing with their affiliated team? Looks like when the affiliation deal didn't work out to the Franke's liking, it caused this eventual move.
