Tailing the Komets

Komets trade for goalie

From a Komets' press release:

The Komets announced Thursday that they have acquired goaltender Ben Meisner from the Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL in a trade for forward Phil Mangan.

Meisner, 23, started this season with Utah appearing in 12 games (2-8-0, 2.65 goals-against average).  Meisner attended the Chicago Wolves AHL training camp prior to the start of the 2013-14 campaign.  Last season the Halifax, Nova Scotia native completed four seasons of AHA (Atlantic Hockey League) play with American International College and capped his college career with a spot on the NCAA (AHA) Second All-Conference Team. Meisner made his pro debut last year appearing in eight ECHL games with Utah posting a seven-game unbeaten string in his first seven starts.

Mangan, 26, began this season appearing in two games with Rapid City before being traded to Fort Wayne and added to the roster 11/9/13.  The forward accumulated three assists and eight penalty minutes in 15 games with the Komets.

Komes GM David Franke said the team will got with three goalies during the weekend.

``We're going to figure out our goaltending situaton. I don't know if it will get taken care of by the weekend. Right now we have three goalies and we'll figure it out.''

Could the Komets be making a deal with one of the three goalies?

``That could happen. That's probably what's going to happen. We're going to take the process a little slow and maybe one goalie goes on reserve.''

Is Reichard not coming back?  He was released on 12/22/13 from Iowa.

So the obvious question has to be:  There are no specific plans for any player changes?  The Christmas roster freeze is barely over and this announcement is made?

It makes sense with Reichard's promotion that the goaltending area needed to be upgraded.

The third line is getting whittled away little by little, and I wouldn't be real surprised if another roster move is announced soon.  After all, they are going to run real thin on forwards with this trade.  It could be construed that this move was made possible by a forthcoming announcement of a forward being acquired, signed, or obtained in some manner.

Officially, are the Komets down to nine forwards now?

It's gotta make Blake happy when they make moves and bring in players not even 24 hours after telling him absolutely nothing was going on and he chastised fans for making stuff up....

Suz......6 pts in 6 games for the new guy is not bad. Not sure how it will work out for us , but it can't hurt  based on who we traded away

Alot of people have been hard on Dave Franke and Gary Graham and after last year I understand people are on edge. Last season was one of the worst I have seen in 40 years. The style of play is much better this year with speed and not having the dump and chase the whole game. Management is slowly getting the right guys or at least trying. Remember last year we could'nt get players or they didnt try. Today's trade was a good one in the right direction. Lets give the Management a chance, who knows they may make some people eat their words by year end. I know I cant wait to get back to the games this weekend. Be thankful we have a hockey team, it could go away real fast. Just my thoughts.

IMO this season has been more frustrating than last for many reasons. Last years team just wasn't that talented. They could have tried harder but they really just weren't that good. Those seasons will happen now and then, esp after multiple championships and moving into a new league. Those seasons are crappy but they don't turn fans away. THIS season is a different story. There is talent on this roster, this is our second echl season so they should have known what to expect. Yes, some fans are hard on Graham and mgmt. We were assured that Graham would give us everything fans want in a team, we were told he was exactly what the players wanted and would respond to. Those are big statements to make. Mgmt and Graham should take some heat for some of the nonsense. If things start looking up on a consistent basis, I will give them credit.
I truly hope Schrock can get the guys to start playing as a team...soon, because Graham hasn't been able to.

I've always put more faith in a goaltenders' goals against average than win-loss record.  I feel the same way regarding a starting pitcher in baseball.  I've always thought that the earned run average was more indicative of a pitchers performance than his won-loss record.

It sounds as if there may be some shuffling going on this weekend.  If a defenseman is moved up to forward, I would like to see Coyle be the guy.
