Tailing the Komets

And a question

At times from the press box, it seems like the PA system in the building is excessively loud, but I was wondering if that's a problem lower in the arena. What do you think?

I sit in the lower level and I do not think the PA system is loud. My problem is that it seems all jumbled and it's difficult to understand what is being said. It's particularly bad when that guy from Preferred Auto does his bit. We can't understand a word he says! Maybe the Coliseum management can work on getting that fixed next.

it would be nice if we could just hear some tunes rather than listen to advertisements all night, especially between periods,

We sit alot up in the pepsi zones. To me the volume seems a bit low there. We(my family and I) have a hard time hearing both the PA Announcer and the music. I think it just depends on where you are in the building...we sit lower sometimes and it isnt a problem and in other areas at times it seems loud. And since they enlarged the building it has gotten real jumbled sounding..even when we hear it louder.

Hi there,
Larry Schmitt, the Komets PA guy here. Yeah, I know the sound system is pretty quirky at times. It's seemed like a work in progress for the last few years. The biggest problem that we seem to have is that the sound system has been worked on by at least 3 different companies since the expansion (2 now defunct) and the sound system wasn't set up right for the new dimensions of the building at that time. It would be nice to have the sound that we had with the old setup, but we just have to keep tweaking it all the time, and whenever a different group comes in to use the building, sometimes the mixing board settings are way different than the way we left them after the previous gams. So one night we get good sound and the next, not so hot. Back in the previous incarnation, I used to be able to do the game with just a handheld mic and no headset, but the delay is about 1 second now so it's impossible to go back to that same style. So please bear with us fans. We keep trying to make it more enjoyable and I wish I could visit every section and get a report of what it sounds like, but that's not possible. Hopefully as time goes on we can get more music into the game, give the sponsors their time, and still keep the crowd in the game. I'm a fan just like you guys are, if you couldn't tell by now :). Go Komets!!!

I sit in lower 205, and have never noticed any problems with the sound system.

We usually sit in 407 and the only thing that I can say we don't understand is when you play the movie clip for the game Name that movie. It always seems really loud and muffled. Other than that, we always here the music and announcements just fine.

I Sit in 200 and Friday was the loudest it's been in a while. During the game it's not too bad because you can hear what Schmidt is saying. For the warm-up it was way too loud.

I sit in the Pepsi section in upper 205, and it tends to fluctuate a lot up there. Some nights, it seems to be at a perfect level, but other nights, it's ridiculously loud, especially during the warm-ups. Almost every night, we struggle to hear the line-up changes, but a lot of the time, that's due to crowd noise.

Thanks for commenting about the sound system, Larry. It's good to know that you realize the problem, and can understand our complaints! Keep up the fantastic work at the games, by the way! You've got a great announcer voice (if that makes any sense, LOL).

I work for a sound system company that actually lost a bid to do the system for the coliseum. The setup of the loud speakers is totally wrong. The setup now creates too many "hot spots". I agree with everything Larry says. Its difficult to have one company design and another to tweak what one has designed.

Didn't realize this question would strike such a nerve, but it turned out to be a good one because it points out to me that it's different in different areas of the building. Larry, thanks for chipping in with some pertinent info.

I hate to change the subject but i was recently at a las vegas wranglers game (ECHL).
they use black netting at the
ends that can be raised between periods for the fans.
that was very easy to see thru
maybe the coliseum could get
something like that, it would give the coliseum a classier look vs. that cheap thick netting that they use now.
(blake maybe you could run that by randy) just a thought to improve the already beautiful war memorial!

Bruce,
That would be an awesome idea but I think the Komets have to pay for the netting or the Komets and the Coliseum go half-and-half on it...I dont know. But you have to ask yourself: Will the Frankes fork out the money for it?... Most likely no.
Blake he is another idea to run by Randy: a jumbotron.

Jumbotron has been suggested many times and is $$$$$ down the road. It's several million to even get a used one.

I'm split on the Jumbotron idea...while I think it would be cool for graphics and replays every once in a while...I get the idea that it would be 90% advertisements and i can not take any more freaking advertisements at the games. The ice already looks like the yellow pages, every single announcement/goal/shootout/penalty...everything is sponsored. Not to mention the $3 dollar programs which have 5 pages of information and 90 pages of ads. What a joke...its like paying for junk mail. (for the record I dont buy them anymore) I'm just wondering when we are going to change our name to the "Preferred Auto Komets brought to you by Three Rivers Credit Union"? I understand trying to make a buck, but they have gone completely overboard to the point where it is just annoying.

As far as the sound, it is brutal in section 202. There are nights when I barely hear anything.
