Tailing the Komets

Are you upset about this?

1. It's bold, honest and unique.

2. The team really doesn't need to market to the diehards (and I define that as anyone who takes the time to read or write on this blog) because they know you'll show up anyway. You may threaten, complain, whatever, but you'll also be there because you are always there. It's part of who you are. I also think there are fewer of you than there were 20 years ago. We can debate all day why that is.

3. They are marketing to the folks who are not already planning to be there, and that's definitely the target audience of that ad. It will definitely get their attention.

4. It's also completely true. Look at the TinCaps. The vast majority of the market is the disposible income, family looking for an inexpensive good time, who go 8-10 times per year. That's who the ad will get. You've got to have a theme to attract casual fans to games today, and the Komets do that very well.

5. It's a discussion-starter and will get people talking, which is what marketing is all about.

Very, very interesting. I don't necessarily like it, but it's not going after me. It is bold and very effective and will do what it is designed to.

Abso-frogging-lutely HATE this add......

IMO, its a slap in the face of those fans who actually come to the games to WATCH the game... I understand what makes this Komets franchise successful and profitable, I get it; but this is a lil arrogant, IMO and ill-advised after the raise of STH prices... We know you'll come back for more so here's a ticket increase and a slap in the face for countless years of loyal attendance...

I form this opinion based on my own feeling and the STH's whom I have know/n who dont go to games to watch Icy or the intermission games, they go to watch hockey.

I usually laugh off most of thier marketing gimics because I know who its aimed towards; but this one really touches a nerve. Myself and another former STH have already talked about renewing our seats for next season due to the excitement of a new and stabile league; but I'm having second thoughts now after seeing this.....

Blast me if you like....this is just how I feel...

This is clever.

I am not saying I like it or don't like it......it is clever.

They are saying in this ad several things.....their message is We Make Hockey Fun.......but at the same time, they threw in there info about the new league and the 3 cups. Like saying, we aren't bragging, but look at my 3 Kups and this new CHL Moniker thing.

And I think they boldly made it look like they are in control of this thing.

"Our new league"

You know.......IHL under the CHL Moniker.......LMAO

And they got the IHL logo on that thing too......thumbs up.

Blake is right.....it would take alot to tick me off and stop attending and stop buying the jerseys. They have me by the jewels so to speak, and they are mocking me.

I can't believe they didn't have an add calling us bloggers Idiots and drumming up the fact the IHL is still alive somehow.

Oh well.

thought it was just fine....and made sense from a marketing standpoint. Komet hockey is about family entertainment, especially in a place like Fort Wayne where inexpensive and modest are the highest values of the community. (And the reason why restaurants like Hall's and builders like Lancia as so successful here.)

watch the hallway fillup between periods with all the bodies trying to get into the lounge and tell me its not about having fun!!! hockey yes but it has become the fun thing to do in the fort on the weekends! i remember the days when it was just about hockey and even having cheerleaders didnt help put bodies in the seats! good honest lets have some fun ad!!

As a fan I could care less as it won't matter to me as long as the product on ice is as good as it always is.
As and advertiser... I LOVE IT!!!!!!!
Anything they can do to get new eyeballs to look at my advertising is a huge big time plus for me. The season ticket holders have all seen my ads and they don't buy programs. Who do? The people who only go to a couple games a year and need to know what is going on. Those are the same fans that (sorry Blake) go to the Komets website instead of here looking for ticket info and other news on an occasional basis. I think this is GREAT!

Agree, Snuff. Why should they spend money and attention on us, they've already GOT us.

I for one do not find hockey to be "family entertainment". I do not have children, but when I do I will not take them to hockey games, unless there is a "family friendly" section or something. I love going to games, and I must admit I get rowdy myself, but...the "...hey, you suck". and "hey guess what your goalie sucks" cheer is not something I would want to expose my child to.

While I do go to hockey games to "have fun" my type of fun is ALL ABOUT THE HOCKEY GAME, and has nothing to do with the games inbetween the periods, or throwing out the chickens, or light bulbs, or singing with a red wig on. I hate the look-a-like cam (and I know I am not the only one), and the endless soundtrack that is always the same.

The only people that seem to have "fun" with that are the people who aren't season ticket holders. It really isn't that fun, but the "fun" is in the HOCKEY that we all paid hundreds of dollars to watch.

I have to step in and defend Larry. His computer full of music is one of the most impressive collections of anything I have ever seen. Sure he plays "old favorites" but from one game to the next he does change up quite a bit. I believe he has also in the past accepted requests and ideas for different stuff.

Reading this, I never would have guessed it would be perceived as an insult, but I can see now how it could. Really all it is says is that the reason people go to games is to have fun, and as honey_b said, you do have fun, don't you? Whether you go for the fights, the game, or Icy's antics, hockey is a game and games are meant to be fun. I mean, it isn't just about winning, is it?

I could care less.

Just remember the wife that takes her husband for granted. Sooner or later something more attractive is going to come along.

When you make it less about hockey and more about entertainment you remove yourself from the "sporting arena" and enter the entertainment arena.. Now you are competing with a lot of other places I could be spending my money.

It would be nice to get some sort of annual perk for being a STH. Then again, you're taken for granted in FW. Can you believe other minor league teams that charge less for season tickets give you a jersey, t-shirt, hat.. somthing to say "thank you".? Odd concept... Unless you're a corporate sponsor.. Then you get showered with stuff.

Going into my 9th consecutive season as a STH, I've accepted that it is what it is. I get a 17% discount of face value of tickets, and the attitude that the Komet organization is doing me a favor be letting me attend. This newest ad is anything new or anything to get excited over.

I have two kids in middle school who have been attending hockey games since they were one. One of them actually plays travel hockey because of the Komets. They know I will act like a dork at the games because I love hockey. As far as the sucks songs. It doesn't bother me. As one commenter pointed out they will hear a lot worse at a very young age. You can't protect them forever.
My kids were listening to the radio in the car and the Gary Glitter song came on. They said hey that's the Komet's song and they sang along. Very funny IMHO

I have given some thought to the IHL logo thing. Yes, Burgee I have a brain! The Komets are really the only club that would be able to use the logo this season. Why you say? Because they won the Turner Cup last season. (actually the last 3 seasons) If your going to display and advertise that "Championship" than you must associate it with the IHL. The only way to do that is the logo. I think they have every right to do just that. I would add that next season may not be appropriate. But than that is another issue to debate next summer. Hopefully it will be the CHL Championship they will be promoting.

We had bad hockey for the past 3 + years and people still came. If they can cram more people into the building w/ this, good for them, I have no problem w/ it.

A lot of the old hockey fans left years ago and choose to sit on the coach and watch NHL Center Ice anyways, a lot of those types are long gone.

I'm not necessarily offended by it, but I think it's exactly why we've had crappy hockey for the past 3 seasons in the pathetic IHL. More power to the Frankes and the ad's, they do it right, no doubt. But I won't spend my money on the stuff that we watched for a few years, bring the CHL and away w/ the IHL!!!!!!

Harbz
Fri, 08/20/2010 - 10:37am

Regarding the IHL logo...note that it and the CHL logo is directly below "Clash of the Champions"...Now, this is just my opinion, but I think the logos are indicating exactly what these two teams are the champions of. Komets = IHL , Rush = CHL.

I know some of you may think it's crazy, but maybe we should look at this more like the American League and National League in MLB. Yes, they are both part of MLB, but they both kind of have their own identity (ie. the AL uses the DH and the NL doesn't) and they each have their own logo. Perhaps that is what the Frankes were invisioning at the start of this thing...though it has really turned into more of a merger than anything else by the simple fact that there are far more CHL teams than IHL teams.

And I have to agree with Dschebig, if they use the IHL logo beyond this season, then it's not appropriate. My two cents...for what it's worth.

To those fans that go to komet games just to have fun, I say kick to komets to McMillen Ice arena and have your fun there. Then we can bring in an AHL or ECHL team and get to watch real quality hockey, something fort wayne has not seen in 5+ years. That sign shows fort wayne where the frankes hearts and minds really are. Buried deep inside the almighty $. I'm surprised one of them has not run for mayor yet.

It is what it is, marketing, and as a long time STH I'm not offended by it. I see this sort of thing anytime I see a commercial on TV for a product or brand that I regularly use.

I figured out a long time ago that using brand X isn't going to get that foxy lady to through herself at me. Besides, if it did my wife would probably make me quit using it. :-)

Photography is a big part of my life. I've been at it since childhood, have achieved limited recognition, and have even made some money at it. I could easily be offended by commercials from either Canon or Nikon that make it look like all you have to do is use their model XXX camera and you can shoot like a pro. I'm not offended because I know better.

In both of the above examples, just as in the Komets ad, there is a targeted demographic. I am not in that targeted demographic and it doesn't bother me at all because I understand they are just trying to sell a brand of beer, cologne, or tickets to a hockey game.

I also understand that if they don't sell those tickets the hockey will go away.
