Tailing the Komets

The biggest difference

I've been thinking a lot lately about trying to quantify the difference between Greg Puhalski and Pat Bingham so I could explain how I see it to you, and there really isn't that much difference other than in personal style. Both are extremely intelligent men and coaches who are the same in terms of drive and the willingness to push their players. You see it more openingly with Bingham, but it was every bit there as much with Puhalski. He was much more private about it and did it behind closed doors. You may not believe that, but it is 100 percent true.

The major difference between this year's team and last year's team is not the coaching, but it's the players. No, it's nothing to do with talent or scouting or any of that either. It's more of an intangible.

The biggest difference is that the players on this year's team really like each other. There's a growing bond there and a closeness in the locker room that I haven't seen on the Komets since the early 1990s. When I first started covering the team in 1990, I thought that was just the way it was supposed to be. Teammates loved each other and were willing to sacrifice for each other no matter what because that's what Boudreau, Chin, Lucyk, Fletcher, Bawa, Kaminski, Dupuis, Lambert, McKee, Richison, Davidson, Hankinson, Jay and Smith did all the time, and please forgive me if I forgot anyone but it's 2 a.m. Those guys know what I mean, though and the respect I have for them all.

I never realized at the time how special those teams were. I just assumed you could create that chemistry every year if  you were willing to work hard enough at it.

Now I realize it was a once in a generation thing, something that every team aspires to but so few ever come close to reaching.

That's the biggest difference between this year's team and last year's team, not the coaching. Richardson, Goneau, Larocque are life-long friends who brought that bond with them, and have included Dupuis who Richardson  played with in Hershey. J.F. Labarre and Martin Gascon have that bond. All of these French players are loving the opportunity to go to work every day with their buddies. They are all having a blast and that translates onto the ice. I see it every day in Kevin St. Pierre's face. He smiles every day and you can tell he's having fun all the time.

I was talking to Bruce and Mario today at lunch and one of the topics was how Arthur is getting some grief on the blog. I think those two would absolutely tear anyone apart who had the guts to say that where they could hear it. They love that kid, his work ethic, his willingness to learn and  his general overall attitude. Here's a kid who paid  his own way to camp, and out-works everyone else on the team every day in practice. Here's a rookie who is going up against the top lines of the other teams every game on the road, when the home coach gets to make the last change, and he never complains. Both Richardson and Larocque talked about how Kiyaga's work ethic in practice pushes them everyday -- and here's an assistant coach and an alternate captain who are known for working hard. They both believe Arthur is going to be an awesome player by the end of the year because he listens and he works so blasted hard. They can't imagine anything less for him, and because of all that the are more than willing to help him make it happen.

I was so impressed because I can't tell you how rare it is for two veteran players like that to jump to the defense of a rookie five weeks into his pro career. They gained nothing from it, but they were both very passionate about it. That's the type of thing that never would have happened last year. I can't tell you how many times I heard veterans say get rid of him and bring somebody else in. There were a few exceptions, but it was definitely not the norm like it is this year.

And I know it's early, but I sense that from all the members of this team. They are building a very close-knit squad, the type of team that like those squads from the 1990s will be friends 20 years from now. The really cool thing is now I'm old enough and experienced enough to recognize it for the amazing thing it is and I can't wait to follow it closely the rest of the year and enjoy it fully.

That may sound completely sappy, but I have been trying to figure out exactly why I am enjoying covering this team so much, and that's it. They really like each other and what they are doing together. If they had the option, they'd spend hours in the locker room after the game rehashing things and just enjoying each other's company. Last year's squad couldn't wait to get away from each other.

I used to think what the Komets had 16 years ago was a fluke, a once-in-a-lifetime thing I would never get the chance to see again.

So that's the real difference between this year's team and last year's squad. It's all about the players and their bond, and that's something no coach can do much about. It's either there or it isn't.

If you haven't figured it out yet, Bingham doesn't lie and he 100 percent believed what he was saying was the truth. The tape recorder wasn't on, there were other people in the room. He believes what he said was true. He wasn't being classy, he was being honest.

It just amazes me that a coach who wins 45 games a year is suddenly THE problem. Maybe if you guys went to practice every day or talked to players at 2 a.m. once a week or had better access you'd have a different perspective. They really should have blown up last year's team and started over and things would have been fine.

I've tried logic, intelligence and facts. Guess I'll never be able to convince you no matter how wrong you are. Players have control over so much more than you will ever realize. I just hope the Komets don't end up facing Chicago in the playoffs.

Of course they have more control, they can not choose to play up to their expectations, look at what happened in Columbus, Gallant gets fired because the team is doing poorly, they've got a decent team than has shown they can compete with anyone in the league, but what do you do when things aren't going as planned, do you change players right in the middle of the season or fired the coach to make a point. I agree that players do have more of a say but in the minors I don't that say is weghted enough as it would be in the NHL.

Fortunately, last year is OVER--and this year's team is fun! Poowholski?

Here's a happy story--one of my coworkers stopped by my desk to see if our company club seats could accomodate her elderly father-in-law. Apparently her family used to go to the Thanksgiving game every year, but because he can no longer handle the stairs, they haven't gone recently. I told her the Coliseum folks are very good at helping out with special needs, so she went home to see if the family was interested in going to the game this year. The next day she was at my desk first thing and said her dad, her father-in-law, their sons and the grandsons all want to go, and that the two "dear old gentlemen" were so excited that it was all they could talk about all night--like little kids, she said. It reminded me that we can moan & groan about what's owed to us as ticket holders (and that's valid) but the flip side is that every time the team steps on the ice, it's a gift to this community. I know of one family that's going to have good memories of the Komets game long after Thanksgiving is over.

Good way to bring us all back to reality, Sparky!

yes it is a gift to the community but we need to moan and groan to keep players and ownership in check. if we dont they can get lazy and start taking things for granted, then the gift becomes a burden and bye bye it goes! beat rockford!

My expectation is to just see a good hockey game. If the Komets lose they lose, it won;t keep me from coming to games. Will it keep others who knows. If we wnat to gripe let's make sure we're griping for the right reasons and in the right way. Best thing to do is to just not acknowledge Puhalski when his name is announced. If anyone has seen the movie "Mystery Alaska", there's a seen in it where the Rangers were coming out to be introduced. THe reaction from the fans was priceless.

I'm writing a column for tomorrow, and it's about how I feel Puhalski deserves some show of respect or what he accomplished here at least in the introductions. If you want to go completely nuts after that, well, he is the enemy now. LOL. But he does deserve some recognition for winning a championship and back-to-back 50-win seasons, something no one else has ever done here. No matter how you feel about him personally, those are incredible achievements.

Blake and Sparky, two good posts. I do hope Komet fans will show Puhalski some class. No matter what you think of him he never did anything to publicly embarrass the team, city or the fans. I hope the fans will do the same with his return.

Off the rumour wire...there might be a coaching change in Ottawa depending on what happens tonight in Buffalo.

Been out of town, and just catching up and I am glad to say that my orange and black tinted glasses just arrived in the mail and I will be placing them on so that my wrong opinions will suddenly become right... I am sure that you gave Bruce and Mario what was truly being said about Kiyaga and that is that some of us believe he is playing out of position...period... I would love to see him as a forward utilizing his speed on the fore check. BUT, I'm sure that its getting around that we are attacking his background, parents, morality, and his heritage. I would be more that happy to sit down and talk to those two about the team and hockey in general. Blake, you must think that just because we make comments on a blog that we wouldnt make the same comments to someones face. So I guess since I am not a sports writer, and I dont throw bean bags into the crowd the only thing I can do is put on my new special tinted glasses and stop being wrong.....

Blake, I respect what you are saying, but having talked to several players on last year's team, there were MANY problems and Chief was one of them. What's really funny is that many of us bloggers were saying that there were "chemistry" problems last year yet you basically said we were all full of nonsense. Now, you want to bury the players from last year's team acknowledging that the bloggers were right. Can't have it both ways Blake.....

There was zero joy, passion, or intensity for the most part with last year's team. Why was that? They tuned out Chief!!! The players couldn't wait to leave the rink last year because everything was so negative. On the record, many of the players that played last year and are on this year's team will say the politically correct thing, off the record, it will be different....

Pooper Scooper is in rare form as usual. Always the voice of reason...er the voice of the company line that is. You and Blake make a perfect one-two punch in that department. My opinion is what it is on "Nothing At All." Sorry I made my opinion known...I believe this was the right area to post it...Right? Didn't you make mention to "The Former Coach" in your puff-piece about how we should all worship the ground he walked on? If you took a poll of who liked the former coach made of cardboard and who didn't...there would be no contest. His style of play was boring, and his motivation skills and player development were non-existant. You might be obligated to suck up to him, but we really don't have to.

You can have your opinion, we can keep ours. I won't even call you any names or tell you that you are an idiot for having your opinion Mr. Sebring. So what if you think my head is harder than a puck. That would be my definition of 3rd grade...

By the way....the Boo-s will be in majority and the signs will be everywhere.

Last thing I'll say (Everbody say Hooray!), but what responsibility do the players have as well? Hmmmm. There were players who were part of the problems as well. Two sides to every story. You guys also have no idea how often players try to use you to stir s--- up either.

Hit, you're always telling me to relax, I was totally kidding. Chill out. I said LOL!

Anyway, the boys need some help tonight so far.

I just have to say, as a total outsider, stumbling on the Komets by coincidence....
1. I'm a bigger Komets fan than a Charlotte Checkers, my hometown.
2. From this blog & research, I know more about this team, coach, the UHL & the fans than Charotte.
3. I have total respect & admiration for Bingham & his coaching style.
4. I attend Checkers games once a month, but I enjoy reading about & watching the Komets more.
5. You guys rock! Enjoy the ganes & keep entertaining me with your blogs!
6. I am close to ordering a Komets jersey!

Cheers!
