Yeah, he gave us change. He cut taxes while boosting spending. Result? Record deficits and a recession. Why do Republicans worship this budget-busting cowboy so much? He wasn't, by any standard, a good president.

Littlejohn, you have a very distorted view of history. Gotta give you and your pals credit, you're really dedicated to re-writing it. Make some more kool-aid, you've gotta be running low.

He was as good a president as he was an actor. Make of that what you will.

Before Dutch, we had Jimmah who gave us double-digit mortgage rates, disgrace in Iran and some lust in Playboy.

Reagan got the country's economy moving again with lower taxes which actually increased government revenues. Alas, the Democratic-controlled Congress spent it all in spades. He also took down the Berlin wall and the Cold War; the USSR disbanded in economic ruin with only the threat of "Star Wars" technology.

Lewis:

Ronnie performed far better as president than he ever did as an actor.

Tim, whatever you may think, I'm a pretty reasonable guy.
I said Reagan cut taxes. That's true.
I said Reagan increased spending. That's true.
I said the result was a record deficit and a recession. Those things are true.
I realize you don't want to admit those things are true, but they are true. Only a liar or an idiot would say otherwise.
I don't dislike you, Tim. This isn't personal. I'm told you're a nice guy. I'd honestly like to have a drink with you.
What did I say that was untrue? What Kool-Aid did I drink?
What are the accomplishments of the Reagan administration? The Iran-Contra scandal? Are you proud of that?
You can't just make up your own facts and call people names.
Everything I said is true, and verifiably true. Please point out where I'm wrong, and I'll cheerfully admit my mistake and correct it.
But if you can't, can you please admit that you are simply wrong yourself? No, of course you can't.
One of us has drunk the Kool-Aid, my friend, and it is not I.
I'm not given to anger toward people I disagree with. To the contrary, I would rather make friends with them. But I at least expect a bit of honesty and rational thought.
What's your favorite watering hole? I'd be happy to buy you a beer. I really dislike anger.

Gadfly:
The Berlin Wall came down during the George H.W. Bush presidency. You're wrong.
Runaway inflation began under the Ford presidency. Remember his "WIN" Whip Inflation Now lapel buttons? Again, you're wrong.
Everything you wrote is wrong, and verifiably wrong.
I don't dislike you, or even know you. But you're either an idiot or a liar.
But, as with Tim, I don't want to dislike anyone. I'll cheerfully buy you a beer if you agree to attempt to stick to actual facts.
Surely reasonable people can discuss these things in a civilized manner.

Littlejohn - you say this isn't personal but you're the only one calling people a liar or an idiot - I'm a little out of your way, but I think I'll pass on the drink.

Larry, I did not call anyone a liar or an idiot. If you re-read what I wrote, you will spot the word "if." You can call that hair-splitting if you like, but I try to be very precise when I write. I'm sure you're neither a liar nor an idiot, but you are wrong.

Littlejohn, fun as it may be once in a while, there's really no point in arguing with you on this one. It's a "big picture" type of topic that you'll simply obfuscate with absurd minutae like the dates of the Berlin wall. While you are technically correct that the wall physically came down after Reagans term, do ya think Bush 41 was the impetus for the wall coming down? I can appreciate why you are dismissive of his noted accomplishments, you have not the ability to understand. Some folks just aren't capable of comprehending the "big picture".

There has always been a certain percentage of Americans like you that were/are blinded to facts by your ideology and that will not change so there is not much point in me assembling a bullet point presentation to prove you wrong, suffice to say Reagan is on the right (correct) side of history and your heroes are/were (unless you're a socialist)traditionally on the wrong side of history.

Tim,
I am not being sarcastic when I say I would probably like you as a friend. You seem like a nice guy. There is nothing personal here.
This is a serious question: What were Reagan's "noted accomplishments"?
I'm not being snotty, my friend. I honestly can't think of a one.
I understand the man's appeal. He had a great sense of humor and leading-man good looks. I interviewed him in 1979 for The Charleston (WV) Gazette. He was a very likable man, and smarter than he generally gets credit for. I liked him.
But his administration accomplished nothing positive that I can recall, and it was astonishingly scandal-ridden.
I'm not saying we should dig him up and kick him; I'm just saying he doesn't belong on Mount Rushmore.
