Tailing the Komets

Can I make a suggestion?

First off, today's story is here. I'm not going to post the notebook because it's pretty much already in the Game 1 notes I posted.

OK, i think there has been some very interesting and very needed discussion going on about the anthem, and I love it. It shows how good this blog can be at its best and I thank you for that.

I totally understand what Hoss was trying to do, and it took some guts for him to make the attempt. I don't think he was doing anything wrong. At the same time, I never thought it would work in Fort Wayne, but a lot of things that work elsewhere don't go over in Fort Wayne. That's part of why we are who we are. We're conservative, behind the times, stuck in the 1950s, family-oriented folks who hate change -- and those are our good qualities. LOL.

My suggestion is this: For Game 2, let's all really cut loose and SING the anthem. Don't just mouth it or stand silently for two minutes or even sing softly, but let's really belt it out. Let's show how much respect and love we have for our country and each other. Yeah, it's corny and maybe not cool, but hey, we're Fort Wayne. When have we ever been cool? But we are Komets fans AND patriots. Let the people next to you hear you are singing and if enough of us do it, maybe a few more people will join in. Get your kids to sing, too. (I know, pipe dream.) Let's try to inspire each other as well as the players. Isn't that really what the anthem is all about?

Plus, it will loosen up your lungs to really get the players going afterward.

It was sung at every game in the old I. Could have possibly been dropped toward the end of the old I's run, but when I was a youngerster, it was sung at every home Komets game.

They also had a Canadian flag hung up thoughout the season. This was around the 92-93 season, as that is when I began going.

And I can remember at some point at the end of the Old IHL that they would sing the Canadian Anthem on opening night and during the playoffs. The UHL had the Canadian Anthem on opening night and playoffs in the first few seasons we joined it, and then it stopped at some point.

It would be cool if they would go back to singing both Anthems as they once did. I love hearing O'Canada as sung by Mr. Didier.....always sends goosebumps down my spine.

It was definitely sung before every game. Then it was cut back to the season opening and then possibly playoffs. The Canadian flag also hung or was draped from the press box. This was before the expansion of the coliseum of course.

I'm pretty sure the Frankes know the answer, I'm positive the change came since they have owned the team. My wife knows the words and remembers it being sung before the games and we've been married 14 years and dated on and off for a few before that.
