Tailing the Komets

Comments from Al Sims

You can see we're struggling and squeezing our sticks and pressing to make every play. I think we have to stay positive and stay positive with the guys and get them untracked here. We're just shooting ourselves in the foot, whether it's taking a penalty at the wrong time or a bad time, or shots going in off Leo's stick. We can't seem to get many breaks arouond the net. We had chances tonight, 2-on-1s, Kaleigh I think had a breakaway, we had Brandon Naurato on a break-in, Matty Curadeau on a break-in, P.C. Drouin on a break-in, and we're just shooting it right into the goalie. It's tough. The guys are really feeling it, and you can see it in the game. They are frustrated. It's just tough on them right now. We have to get untracked at home.

Guy, P.C., Leo are our older guys, our veteran guys. Leo has a goal. We've got a few points. We need to break out, whether it's Chris Francis breaking out or whoever. I'm mixing the lines in the third period. We tried to stick with our lines that we went with all week the first two, but we've got to try something. We tried Mathieu on the left side with Francis, figuring that might click a little bit. We're trying everything to get somebody to put the puck in the net, but it's been tough. Guys get in there, they don't even want to shoot the puck. They're overpassing. We preached to them shoot the puck all week and guys are just squeezing their sticks right now and it's tough on them. I feel bad for them. There's nowhere for us to go but up. It can't get any worse. Maybe another scoreless period. That's still not worse, it would be the same. It just can't get any worse. We have to at some point get a break and maybe score the first goal of the game and get the crowd into it, get them behind us and get us going.

I was at the game last night. What does Sims mean it can't get worse and they need to get some breaks? They looked worse this game than against Rapid City to me. They added speed but all they do is dump the puck in and have the mentality of ok now lets see what happens instead of attacking. They played ok for brief times in the 2nd and 3rd period but that was it. I saw Shrock, Cianfrini and Francis play hard because they seem to be our energy guys. Everyone else looks disinterested or confused. Bloomington was not that much better than us. We play sloppy and careless. It takes crisp stick to stick passing and smart play. We have neither. This was game 5 and 5 total goals, 0 at home. At this point in time I think if we score a goal at home Franke should celebrate and raise another banner in honor of the goal and have the puck bronzed.

Certainly a humbling and challenging beginning to the season and hopefully the right solutions will be made. "When the going gets tough--the tough get going" and we need to see the real hustle out there to show we can play in this league.Managing the expectations and attitudes at this point is critical and I hope we get some crucial conversations and decisions made soon for the long run.

When you are starving for goals and goal scorers I'm not sure why you have Rechlicz and Legault dressed at the same time. The bench is short enough and to have two non-offensive players in the line up doesn't make sense to me.

Warner made the bench even shorter with his little tantrum.

The other day I made a comment about not seeing any leaders stepping up on the team. Blake kind of stepped on me a little. Check out Cohn's article in this morning's paper.

Talk about pressure. They had better win tonight, not just score, or you will see a whole lot of roster activity. Please don't tell me it has been just five games. Bloomington was 4-1 five gmaes into the season.

When you dump the puck All the time you are just giving up control to the other team!! Talked to Tim Hoke afterwards upstairs and you can tell that the Gotw crew is getting nervous. Since I just moved to Fort Wayne last year it seems that the thrill is gone from what i hear from the other fans. Hope tonight is a breakout night but not holding my breath. Hit made good points as well as Alan.

Alan, tonight is one of those nights where we answer that question, which was unanswerable before. Former Komets players who became leaders looked at games like this as an opportunity. We'll see what and who happens.

Not to mention that Evansville played last night... so the K's have an advantage right there. Har-har. Seriously though, looking at Evansville's record, they were doing about the same as we were until last night (when they beat Quad City 5-4). The Komets should have a strong showing against them if they are capable of doing so. If not... Well, then it's definitely time for fans to worry.

Oops, make that 6-5. Knew it was a fairly high scoring game...
