The fight game

OK, this ought to spark enough discussion here to last a month, and I'm telling you upfront I'm going to play the devil's advocate role. No name-calling unless it is directed at or from Hit Somebody, whom I think enjoys it. LOL. Play nice and I think we can have a lot of fun with this, but I'm guessing this discussion might get quite emotional. Here goes:

Does fighting hurt hockey as a sport in terms of legitimacy?

Why should two guys on the ice be allowed to get away with something that two fans 15 feet away in the stands would be arrested for and charged? How can a sport that officially endorses breaking the law be legitimate? If you took fighting out of the game, would you lose fans or gain fans, and if that's the only thing bringing some fans to the game, just how good is that sport? Does fighting really add to the game? (I actually know people who won't take their kids to games because of fighting.) How does hockey get away from the stereotype of fighting to the broader audience, and it must draw a broader audience?

If you say it's a physical game, well, so is football and the players control themselves. When do you start to teach players it's OK to fight? Is it OK for the kids? Why not? If no one gets hurt fighting, why doesn't everyone do it?

For years the argument is that there would be too much stickwork, but hasn't that already happened even with fighting? How often do players actually retaliate for stickwork by fighting? If fighting is gradually decreasing anyway, how much worse would it be just to eliminate it completely?

How do you explain it to friends who ask about fighting?

BTW, does anybody out there know why fighting was included in the game originally? I'm curious. OK, so have at it.

Blake, you can't throw a 95 mph fastball in your neighbors ear either. You will be arrested. Trust me on this one.

I agree with Jungle... If I tackle someone on the street I'll get arrested, or if I intentionally slam my car into someone on the road to get ahead of them and spin them off into traffic, I'd most likely get a trip down town etc... So what am I missing???

So how come awhile back when we were talking about who we would like to see in town nobody suggested Tedstone? Fighting is about all he is good for (well besides keeping the team bus on the ground in case of a hurricane, but you can get anyone leaving the golden corral to do that!)

Are you going to fill us in with the answer key or is this going to go on until training camp?

There is no answer, it's just an interesting philosophical discussion. What would you like to talk about on the blog? I was just getting of all the slam Puhalski and Frankes and re-sign everyone stuff.

Sparky, if Roloson keeps playing like he is, it's definitely a possibility. The Sabres/Canes game was good last night too. I am just ready to see the oilers finfish it up with the Ducks. Roloson deserves that win.

Ba humbug!! I never stand either. I wheel around the infield in my Rascal Scooter lol.
You are right on one thing though. My better half certainly holds all of the beauty around here lol.

You mean your greater half.

Tony, now that the UHL appears to be a midwest based league (maybe) would'nt Tedstone be better suited to stop a tornado instead of a hurricane? Besides, I'm wanting to see the 'canes go to the finals! BTW, my last visit to Golden Corral (wife loves their steak!) I did lose some weight....in the wallet!

Lol. Bob and Blake. Ashley is not only my greater half but my pet name for her is "the highly exalted one" :-)
Bob I love the Golden Corral too. I always said Michigan is missing on some great food.
No Sonic, Waffle House or Golden Corral. We are deprived!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tony, my wife is known as "The Princess" I don't think The Fort has a Waffle House, but right down the road from my house there is an awesome IHOP right off I-69 and Lima Road.....the Corral is nearby also.

Sorry Bob, I hope it's the Sabres/Oilers for the cup. I like both of them. LOL Also, keep winning K-Zoo.

I.L.H. I have been rooting for the Oilers also. To be honest, I would be happy to see any of those teams win it all....since it would either be a first time champ or someone who hasn't won it in a long time. Tony....that is one of the nicer hotels for the money...about 2-3 minutes from my place. Go Kalamazoo!

Bob We really like it. The staff is nice, clean rooms and never a problem with noisy people.
BTW I sent you an email from my business address last night. Let me know if you did not get it.

Tony, I haven't gotten it yet, but my e-mail system trapped something from an address ending in "@insightbb.com" I will be near the computer for awhile if you want to resend it.

My dad lets my sisters and i come to the games. I think the fighting isn't bad as long as my favorite players, like ?Carpentier? and ?Chaulk? and was ?Worlton? and others. Fighting lways gets games fired up, also. Has anyone noticed that after fights the players get more penalties and goals than usual? I have.
