Tailing the Komets

Franke: we're looking for scoring

``We're looking at some guys,'' Komets General Manager David Franke said. ``We don't have that one or two legitimate 30- or 40-goal scorers yet, but we're working on that. Those type of guys are kind of waiting to see how much they can get because they are in demand. We need a little more offense up front, and that's what we're working on now. I really think the two guys we announced today will be big offensive guys on this team. They know what it takes to win and they like the taste of it.''

As for Frankie DeAngelis, he's scheduled to speak with the Komets again on Thursday, and Franke said he's continung to talk with defenseman Simon Mangos, but so are several other CHL teams.

After last season, we are too, Mr. Franke.

Don't forget to say an extra prayer for Tim.

Building a team is like putting a jig-saw puzzle together. Offensive defensemen, defensive defensemen, goaltending, offensive forwards, defensive forwards, grinders, toughness, all packaged together by the restraints of a salary cap with intangibles such as team chemistry that can undo all the good in a hurry.

I am so happy to hear that the Franke's are now going to look to put scoring at the their highest attention level.

If DeAngelis is signed then the K's have a pretty good start at offense from the blue line. If he does sign I would look for solid, stay at home, clear the slot and protect my goaltender types of defensemen. Mangos probably would fit that bill.

If the Franke's can get two snipers with the 30-40 goal potential this team could shape up to be special.

If he doesn't sign anywhere else, I think the K's could be wise in bringing Curadeau back at a lesser price than last year. I know all the arguments, but he is a guy with talent. With more talent around him I believe he could relax and just play hockey. He had great numbers in the playoffs.

Like I said, putting a team together is like putting a puzzle together. All the pieces have to fit.

So far I am pleased with the new signings. They are solid players. Much will be determined by the snipers they sign, however. The job is not near done.

It was refresning to read Smith say he appreciated the passion and the attendance by Komet fans. Nice to hear a player actually mention that as one of the reasons why Fort Wayne looked attractive.
