Tailing the Komets

Franke: We're not cheating

After the discussion came up on the blog recently, I asked David Franke how he would respond to people who say the Komets must be cheating to amass such talent.

``That's easy to say when somebody wins,'' he said. ``Everybody thinks you're not doing it legally. We have too much to lose to do that stuff with our franchise and and how we run it and the success we have. The fans come out. We don't pay them to come out. We try to put a good product on the ice. an entertaiing product. Most of the time we do. For the most part we have a product that is appealing to our fans, and they like to see them come out.

``It's not worth it. We operate within the guidelines and we work the guidelines as much as we can in our favor, but at the end of the day we're doing as much as everybody else is doing, and we're paying by the rules.''

He also pointed out that one huge advantage the Komets have is that players who leave always want to come back because they do enjoy playing here so much. Mathieu Curadeau, Olivier Legault and possibly Kevin Reiter would just be the latest examples, but P.C. Drouin, Guy Dupuis, Colin Chaulk, Konstantin Shafranov, Matt Syroczynski, Mitch Woods, Kevin Bertram and Justin Hodgman are just a few of the recent examples of players who have left and returned.

``They like playing here, and they like playing in front of a lot of people and they they get treated well,'' Franke said.

CometswithaK_ How did they cheat/run the league/etc. when they won the cup in 92-93? Do you not give the coach and players credit for the wins? That's pathetic isn't it?

The Komets won the cup three years in a row in the IHL2 but they sure as heck didn't dominate the league, check the records. Remember the overtimes for one of those cups, closeness of the top teams at the end of the season, the slumps when everyone complained because we were in fourth place, our final standing in the league coming down to the very last game of the season in the league, and more if I choose to go on? I understand it now, they manipulated those events, circumstances, teams, coaches, and players so it just looked close, eh.

Returning to my vacation, weather is beautiful up here and I'm having some great conversations about hockey with people who understand the game, love and support their teams and owners.

Not to be misunderstood, I realize that applies to most of the people who respond to Blake's postings on this blog. Speaking of which, thanks Blake for doing the work and asking the questions.

Geeeez. All I said was, " Does anyone really think he would admit to cheating". Now I get accused of calling him a cheater. Where in my words does it say that? Calm down people. I would expect very few people to admit to any kind of cheating, myself included. Once again, calm down people.

why cant the komets rule the chl?? we are one of the strongest if not the strongest franchises in all of minor league hockey. i bet most of the chl teams wish they were in the frankes shoes. but the game is played on the ice and we have a strong lineup on paper and one of the best judges in talent for a coach and a gm so it should be a fun season no matter what! move over tim and dennis, here i come!

Blake (or anyone that can answer),

In many professional leagues with salary caps, the figure can be exceeded, but the team must pay penalties or "luxury taxes" that either go to the league or are dispersed among teams under the cap.

What are the rules in this league and have the Komets ever had to pay any of these fees (like when adding a Justin Hodgeman for the playoffs)?

It's a hard cap, so you can't fluctuate week to week. They had also lost Shafranov off the cap this year and P.C. last year because of injury. As far as I know they have not had to pay the luxury fees when they were applicable in the UHL, but they never make those kind of things public. They may have had to at that point, when it was legal. We'll never know.

Chaulker we will agree to disagree but this is not the forum to debate it.

It wont do any good Chaulker, people with closed minds are incapable of accepting others ideas or opinions. They just attack and resort to name calling.

Well, your right, figure I would offer up some conversation options instead of a quick pull at another website that he/she knows nothing about.

It's a lot more difficult to keep all 18 teams fan base happy, opposed to just worrying about one. Heaven forbid there are other sites that offer opinions and conversation about any other team.

I don't know how you do it, Chaulker. It's hard enough with one audience keeping me on my toes. I tip my hat to you.

Yeah I figured you two would go to the gangland tactic on my post.
Sorry I am not going to engage it. I stand by my statement.

Now you can continue to defend your "turf" but I won't be responding to it.

Gangland tactic??? Thats freaking hilarious....

Chaulker and I see this kind of post alot from those who are unable to back up thier claims with anything concrete... Close minded individuals who can only attack from emotion rather than discuss with an open mind utilizing facts or information gathered...

Chaulker...What is nice about Blakes blog is you absolutely, positively have the right to be wrong. That has been pointed out to me more than once. Of course you can always be like me and be right. (At least I like to think I am) If push comes to shove you can always follow Burgee and pop some little pills and drink foo foo's and hide by the pool.

If we can not laugh at ourselves sometimes life is really not much fun.

Blake, it's not fun, but we really don't have many CHL fans from other teams......That's the one thing I'd like to get on it, to see what they are thinking about the CHL and to get some more info. on something I know very little about.

The one good thing about Blake's blog is Blake and his writing.......he's the man when it comes to K's news and CHL information in general.

I'm an information freak, from every angle when it comes to minor hockey. And Blake's blog is one of the best places to get it, when you just read his post. It's okay for someone like Snuff to say whatever they want and not back it up w/ anything, I suppose. That's the part that drives me nuts.

LOL, Chaulker and I agree competely on something! By that I mean it's hard figuring out the CHL sometimes.

I wish I had more time to devote to coverage of the Ks. There just aren't enough hours in the day or people in the newsroom anymore. It's taking every shortcut I've ever learned just to keep up with what I do, even though it's the off-season. It's really rough when everyone expects 100 percent all the time, and I just can't give that much attention to something. We used to be able to anticpate things a lot better, but now it's always following up because there are so many other responsibilites. In some ways it was a lot more fun 15 years ago because I knew everybody in every front office of every team. Now I've outlasted just about everyone but Bob and Fic. LOL.

All right, enough, whining and back to my list for the day.
