The scary thing is that it doesn't seem that outrageous:

Employee Piper Withley says they put the high price up as a deterrent, hoping to avoid having people waste their time stopping at the station, only to find that they were out of gas.
This is just a small suggestion, but, next time, a simple "Out of gas" sign might be better.

Hey, it worked during the oil embargo crisis of the mid 70's...
It'll work again.
Of course you realize that it MIGHT involve having to actually MAKE the sign (that's too much work)...and then AFFIX the sign outside (more work).
Much easier to just punch up some numbers and change the LED display on the signage instead.
