How do goalies develop radar to know where the net is behind them?

Whenever Reiter plays goal someone around me will yell, sometime during the game, that he should stay in the crease and not wander about, and it's true that once in awhile a goalie that moves far from home will get caught looking bad. What folks don't always realize are the times the goalie, by moving from the crease, made a play that took a good shot away from the opposing player, or maybe even stopped a play developing that would have produced a quality shot on goal. That won't show in the goalie stats, but it's as good as a save made.
