I watched the video three times and I think Haun is lucky that he only got seven games. If an opposing goaltender did that to one of our players we would be screaming bloody murder.

First time in a long time I agree with Savage. That looked BAD!

I agree guys. That was awful. :( I am glad the guy was not hurt.

If Haun wanted to stick up for his teamates he could have dropped his stick and gloves and charged at the guy without using his stick as a weapon. Everyone remember what happened to Marty McSorley? For those who don't he was charged and convicted for assault with a weapon when he hit Donald Brashear over the head with his stick.
I have been a major supporter of Haun for his play but in this situation, he should consider himself VERY VERY lucky that their isn't a D.A. in St Clair county looking to file charges against him.

I agree it looked awful. The high hit to the Komet skater looked bad too. Not as bad as Hauns swing of the stick....but when you think about all the high hits the Komets had taken over the previous 20 games from guys taking a run at our players because they know they can get away with it, Haun probably was frustrated, tired, and tired of watching his team and himself take a beating. Does it make what he did right??? No. But he is serving his time right now. And this proves once again to me, that the K's could use someone BIG on the ice that can put the fear back into the opposition so that the cheapshots will be thought about before they happen, and so guys can skate without fear of these elbows, head-hunts, and so on. Maybe if the other team has to look over their shoulder some, they would be less willing to take those awful cheapshots.

Haun shouldn't have swung his stick. Don't misunderstand me.

But it's totally justified as long as the Komets bring in a big goon?

MR SNUFFLUPUGUS

Blake I think he believes that a goon taking up space on the bench for 57 of the 60 minutes of a game will cause the cheap shot artists to cease their questionable hits on Komets players.
He is possibly correct.
I believe though that those cheap hits will simply take place when the goon is on the bench so unless the goon can play a regular shift nothing will change other than the goon may leave the bench and get himself suspended or pound on someone from the opposing team who most likely will not be the person who delivered the cheap hit on the Komet player.
Most goons mainly fight with other goons and don't go out of their way to take runs at other players. The cheap shot artists (see Robin Bouchard/Jason Lawmaster ) will simply wait for the goon to be off the ice before taking liberties with Komet players because they aren't interested in fighting.
That is my theory.

P.S. Macmillan is a "goon/fighter" who can also skate a regular shift. But as many have pointed out he is small.
A "goon/fighter" who is larger, say 6'3 and can take a regular shift with any skill will most likely find himself in the AHL where the NHL teams want those type players there to protect the teams prospects.

If you are asking if Haun's swing is justified...no way.

I am only saying, that if we bring in a D-man that can lay out the hits and make the opposing forwards think twice about running our goalie and taking whacks at Shaf, Chaulk, PC, etc, then the policing takes on a new level for this team. I think it is more of a team concept of physical play that needs to step-up. When guys hit more, it puts the other team on thier heels and makes the Komets more aggressive in nature, instead of being the team on their heels and taking the beatings.

I don't need a one or 2 shift a game goon that fights only. I want a group of players willing to hit, take the body, and police the ice collectively, but we have to have a few guys on the ice every shift willing to do it. Not just one or 2 guys. Schrock and Mac making all the body checks serves what purpose? It needs to be most of the team most of the time.

Fair enough and well thought out.
Then the question becomes who do you suggest they go get that isn't playing now or if you are proposing a trade, who are you willing to part with that will actually report to another team that another team would want in exchange for a quality physical defenseman?

Big deal. I've seen far worse go unpunished in the UHL/IHL.. If Haun intended to hurt him, he would have swung at his head.

Good Idea.. no. Good Sportsmanship.. nope...

Will Port Huron players think twice before screwing around with Huan? Yep... Do the "gentlemanly" players get that kind of respect? Nope. They get jumped and elbowed into the land of concussion.

I'm glad Haun stood up and did something.

Mike Sgroi would fill that role. 5-10 goals & 300 pim.Merry Christmas to all.

Mike Sgroi is a head case! Lots of problems. That is way he has played for so many teams. The Komets do not need a head case. I agree with your assessment of our needs But, a cement head case is not the answer, sorry!

JR
Thu, 12/24/2009 - 8:11am

I'm not necessarily voting for a Sgroi character; but the other teams know when you have somebody on the other team who could blow a head gasket at any time whether you take liberties with his team mates or not and play just a little bit different...

Mac is not a goon......a goon is a player like tedstone. Mac is a player who has the b@#%s to drop 'em when needed. Big difference.

I do think what haun did was a little over the edge. He was probably tired of seeing his teamates get pushed around. I don't doubt the frankes are looking for a new goalie.

MR SNUFFLUPUGUS
Thu, 12/24/2009 - 10:50am

Oh no! You can't have Sgroi! He is too small. Who cares how many penalty minutes he has? He is no bigger than Mac.

MR SNUFFLUPUGUS
Thu, 12/24/2009 - 10:56am

And enough of the bending over and worship of that guy already please! He has done NOTHING in his career but get himself famous for a cowardly attack of an opponent while he was sitting in the penalty box.
And I really really hate to bring any facts into this but he has had 300 pims ONCE in his career back in 1997-98. A quick glance at his stats shows he averages less than 200 a year even when combining his stats when he plays for several teams in a season. Very impressive anyway if you like that sort of thing and yes he can score 5-10 goals a year. But everytime he steps on the ice all the hockey world will think about is, "there is the coward who jumped a guy in the penalty box". I don't want to see that on the team I follow.

Thu, 12/24/2009 - 11:59am

First Sgroi is 6'5 220 lbs so he is not too small, secondly there is a reason he has played for many teams in his career, similiar to Frank Littlejohn I will let everyone draw their own conclusions. Mr. Snufflupugus not everyone would think that, he would more than likely become a Fan Favorite just like every other "tough" hockey player that has worn a K's jersey. Steve Fletcher Andy Beazu, Kevin Kaminski, etc...We have a had our few "head" cases through out the years. If I am not mistaken Sgroi is out for the year with an injury, so it is not going to happen.

The fact that he can't play shouldn't stop people from telling others how dumb they are... Merry Christmas.

I do stand corrected on his height. I will not however back down from the opinion that he is nothing but a coward who will do nothing to help you win a championship.

what is there to justify?...that they sign a player willing to stick up for his teammates...they knew McMiilian was suspened and had to notice along with..i don't know say a few thousand fans that the boys were getting pushed around...so not only is Haun the back up goalie but he also now the back up enforcer...No worries...i'm getting my oragne shaded glasses for Christmas...and they say SHAME right across the middle of the lenses....

Ok, Sgroi , when the K's had his rights a couple of years ago they wanted him. Who else is out there? I'd also like Jimmy Bonneau.

Sgriffith
Fri, 12/25/2009 - 3:02pm

Well I thought he was done for the year...He signing in Elmira. Here is a link...http://www.wetmtv.com/sports/story/Sgroi-Coming-Back-To-Elmira/Qu6T0oX7k0OGcFO30nHqRA.cspx

He had 21 points a few years back that lead Elmira to a division championship

Isn't Bonneau still playing the role of cementhead in the AHL. At least he has youth on his side and isn't a complete headcase like Sigroi. On the other side of the coin he has less skill than Sigroi. But I'd rather take my chances with him both because of his youth and reputation on not being a dirty player.

Saw something that made me laugh during the Cleveland Cavaliers/LA Lakers game tonight....bad call or something, and all the fans threw their foam fingers (must have been a giveaway) onto the court. So I suppose that makes the NBA a "bush league" as well because their fans do stupid things like that after drinking too much or letting their emotions get the best of them, huh? LOL....
