Tailing the Komets

Have a great weekend

I know I will. Looks like the weather is going to be awesome!

Coming tomorrow I've got some in-depth features on John Marks and Pat Bingham dealing with what kind of coaches Komets' fans can expect depending on who gets the job. I'm more convinced than ever that the Komets can't go wrong with. Everybody: fans, management, players, seem to love both of these guys.

Of course in December that won't stop some of you on the blog from complaining about how we didn't get the other one. LOL. I'm going to be out of pocket, so you'll actually have to buy the paper or look around on the site to find them.

Have a good one.

There is nothing I can say that is going to change anyones mind here. Like I said above, I am not throwing a chair because he is gone but I would have been pleased to see him back.
I trust the Komets management will bring in good defenceman but there has been alot of short sightedness (I can't spell this late) on the qualities that Rob Guinn brought to the ice every night. The CHL is a better league for having Guinn in it.

Just one question...
While Guinn was fighting twice a night, who was going to eat up his 10 minutes he spent sitting in the penalty box. Without the numbers in front of me I would guess he was one of the leaders in minutes played each night.

JR

Who asked him to fight twice a night???? Did Rob hire you to be his legal council, or do you just like to contradict everyone else???

Rob, I think that you have what it takes to become an excellent nurse. My sister went back to school and is now a licensed RN that specializes in cardiac telemetry. Like JR said, it can be a difficult profession. (My sister was working next to the unit where my father died during a routine angioplasty about 4 years ago.) Again, Kathleen and I wish you well....I hope that your good memories of The Fort are plentiful. To all, Happy Canada Day and Happy 4th of July!

JR, I don't contradict. I state my opinions. Sometimes I am in the majority, sometimes not. I have never cared which side I fall on. I respect the opinions of others even if they don't fall the way mine do. I think it is possible I look at the game a little less emotionally than most fans. I don't know if that comes from my experience playing or just because of the advice my grandfather gave me years ago which is to cheer for the jersey first, then the players. The reason I am not "upset" Rob is leaving is because I understand this is a business and player movement is common and in many cases a good thing. I do not share the opinions of the perceived lack of ability some folks here have of him. Like all other players, I look at abilities and flaws and try to figure out how they fit in for the player as an individual and into the team they are playing on. My analysis of Rob Guinn is that he was a clear asset to the Komets for the time he played here. That is my opinion. I understand many here are of the opposite opinion. Like Rob said, that is what is great about being a fan. Everyone gets to have an opinion.
I first saw Rob Guinn play back in the mid 90's in Sarnia. I have enjoyed watching him develop as a player from those days to the player he is now.

I could care less about a defenseman fighting everyone in the league...just take the body more than once every 3 games. I know this wasn't Rob's style and it definitely wasn't Chief's style either. I think alot of us expect a certain kind of style out of the Komet Teams. The last few years, especially this past season, was hard to watch. We had the notion crammed down our throats that this league is no longer physical. That is not what sells at this level. We go to the games to be entertained and most fans enjoy a physical game. Not just Rob on this one either...but the group of Komets assembled last year lacked physical play and it was the downfall for this team. No offense to anyone that was on that team. I am sure all or most of those guys are great people. We are talking hockey for the most part on here. As I have said before...if you are that sensitive to what guys say about players on here...stop reading the blogs. This is a forum for debate, goofing around with each other, and nonsense most of the time. I don't think anyone of us wants to make any of the players feel awful about themselves. Last season was a tough one for us Komet fans to swallow for many reasons. I am sure it wasn't that great playing on that team either from the many stories that are filtering their way out as well. Sounds like lots of bad things were going on behind the scenes that would make a lot of us pass-out. Maybe Rob getting away from the Chief's system will allow him to get back to playing the hockey that we all knew he was capable of playing.

We truly wish you luck Rob. I too respect the person that you are and wish you the best of luck in your career after hockey as well. I too work in the health care industry and know that it takes special people to that job.

Tony, your remark about cheering for the jersey first, then the players is sound advice. If the team did not think that Rob Guinn and others were the type of players they wanted...then they would not have been signed. Finding players at this level is another sometimes thankless job when one looks at the pay and travel. Like you said, it's a business....What do you think the other bloggers would do if say they could be either a player, or perhaps David Franke for a day? Would that change some people's opinions? BTW....any updates on the MDA auction bids?

Okay, well since I didnt play organized hockey then my opinions dont add up to a hill of beans.... Blake can we have blog made especially for those of us who didnt play and therefore have bad or over emotional opinions so that we do not offend the players or former players of organized hockey with our comments....it could be like the minor league blog and every once in awhile you guys could call one of us up if to the "show" blog when our comments get better or we start playing in an organized mens league or something....

JR if anything I said made came off as an attack on your opinions or inferred that they were not valid I apologize. It was not my intent to say it that way nor do I believe it. There is nothing wrong with your opinions or your emotions. You are a passionate fan. Ok MAN? ;-)

So much for taking the high road. I can't believe I missed this. Now if only we could get Andy Townsend to come on here and tell us that he's forgotten about more fights than we've ever been in... lol.

It is nice to see so many of these guys who do not fit into the "dumb jock" stereotype.
Many of these guys have college degrees in things besides your typical "basket weaving" classes you find many atheletes taking.
Good for Andy. Our society needs quality people teaching our youth.

I have been waiting and thinking about whether to post my thoughts on Chaulk or not. Since apparently folks are already riled up with me right now, why the heck not.

First off let me say I like Chaulk. I think he played hard and was a good captain for this team. I also got a kick out of having a native of Toronto being the Captain of the Komets.
HOWEVER..........
Part of being a leader is putting the team first. He was OVERPAID for what he produced last year and coming off the injury, and with the salary cap in place, it is not unreasonable for the Komets to ask him to take a paycut. His numbers did not warrant him being the highest paid player in the league. It isn't the Komets being cheap. It is them needing to spend money on other talent so they don't finish 6th again. If Chaulk is this great leader everyone says he is, let him prove it by putting the team first. Give the Komets some cap room to sign other players! Otherwise, thank you Colin for the contributions you have made to this organization. Good luck playing for another team who will pay you what you are asking.
I think the Komets can take his salary and bring in 2-3 players who can more than fill in for his production.
When the NHL went to a cap EVERYONE took a pay cut. Everyone from Jagr, Yzerman, Sakic to the 3rd string goalies. They did it both for the good of the game and the good of their respective teams. Chaulk is not above the concept of the team.

Now, before you guys crucify me, remember the auction ends tonight at 9. I will be at my computer hoping to be handling a late round flury of bids.

Well said, Tony. I am far from a Franke fan, but I've heard some of the numbers that Colin might have made last year, and if that is the case we will end up with Colin and 16 Huckalo's.

I agree. I just wanted to throw this out there before the news comes down one way or the other so it can't be said I am choosing sides after the fact. If he comes back at a reasonable dollar figure then great. If he feels he has an "entitlement" to a high salary that will hamper the team from improvement, then he should take his services elsewhere. This is a performance based business and his performance last season did not live up to his salary.

i don't disagree totally with you Tony....but you are comparing two totally different things here. Guys that took pay-cuts in the NHL were still making millions. Guys that take paycuts in the UHL...we are only talking thousands. That is the only thing I disagree with. I still think that Colin is a very important component for the Komets. Put the right talent and coach in place...and he will lead us to the cup once again.

Wow, I've missed alot.

As for Guinn, Good luck in New Mexico.

As for Chualk:
Mark-I think the Frankes DO WANT Chualk, as Tony said it's a matter of making sure they have the best team available to put in the ice with him.

Tony-Thanks for the Jersey first player second comment. I made that remark when the first Chaulk rumors came out. I would disagree with you about putting the team first. I believe at some point in a players playing life he sees that he needs to put himself first. I have nothing wrong with Colin wanting to get as much as he can, it then becomes his choice whether or not to play for a team he thinks is paying him what he deserves. I am not Chaulks biggest fan, I think his game has missed something in the last year and a half, IMO, but if he wants to make "x" amount, then he needs to find some place that will agree to pay him. If he then chooses not to accept the Frankes offer, I'll wish him good luck on what ever he does.
BTW Tony-How about not siging Belfour either?

This is for Blake or anyone else out there:
Considering Chaulk is coming off what was, for him, an injury-filled year, are the Frankes considering a base salary of X, loaded with incentives, such as games played, point production, all-star selection, end-of-year awards?

I know that happens in the higher levels, where contracts are geared toward that end, but does this happen in leagues like the UHL? If so, how (or does) this count toward a salary cap?

Just curious.
