I'm still smirking over Mr. Lund's overstatement of the obvious....!

The biggest "culprit" in all of this has been the advent of the SUV, MINIVAN, and like vehicles. Most ANY car will not fair well against a TRUCK. Heck, some small trucks don't fair well against larger cars anymore.

And let's be fair...SUVs and Minivans ARE TRUCKS...period. The station wagon was a CAR.

SO now we have people that can barely be called an automobile driver getting behind the wheel of a TRUCK...(subsequently treating the truck LIKE a CAR...bad idea).

It's a difference in physics thing, kids.

And not everyone is cut out to drive a truck.

But we ARE learning this lesson, are we not?

I am a big proponent of conservation. That being said, how you drive is just as important as what you drive. A person driving a smaller vehicle with better MPG that darts in and out of traffic, speeding and making jack rabbit starts at traffic lights, will get no better gas mileage than some of the bigger vehicles. However I fail to see the purpose of driving a Hummer. Come on-what is the point of that? Let's just be real-mostly men like the bigger vehicles because it makes them feel more masculine, powerful, in control etc. If you need it to haul something or for more room, that is fine. But alot of people do not need a huge vehicle for either. Alot of them drive recklessly too-tailgating, speeding up and then cutting in front of you because you won't go 20 miles over the speed limit. I don't think anyone needs to drive something that gets less than 15 mpg.

Great idea Laura, (if you live in China). If it gets less than 15 mpg it should be taken away from the driver and crushed immediately. I'm gonna order my Isuzu tomorrow.

Following that logic (or lack thereof) we certainly don't need big houses either. We should just figure out how many square feet are necessary per person and live accordingly.

The less choices we have to make for ourselves, the better, right?

Actually, I've read that the Hummer generates the most consumer complaints, and that most of the consumers are women.

Thinking about this, one can envision a yuppie couple, earning lots of disposeable dollars, and driving comfortable cars....and then the husband - in a bit of caveman-logic, says "Dear, let's trade the Lexus in on a Hummer" - and he's thinking that then his wife will be all the more safe, and she's thinking that she'll have the only red Hummer in the parking garage at work...... and THEN she discovers the thing rides like a log-wagon compared to the car she used to have, and she needs a step-ladder to get into and out of it, and it costs $86/week to gas it up, and you can't hear the sound system ove the tire-noise, etc etc etc

Your response Tim is proof of my logic. I don't know what China has to do with what I said but there are lots of SUV's and other cars with plenty of room for families that get more than 15 mpg. I agree too that people build too big of houses. Let's just cut down all of the trees, kill all of our wildlife with urban sprawl, pollute the air with monstrous vehicles that are just to appease egos and everything will be just great. You obviously don't care about anything except what you want Tim. That's the problem with too many people.

Laura,

Do a little research. You'll find that China regulates everything, much like you suggest. The government decides how much space you need in your vehicle, how big your house can be, how many children and pets you may have, and if you break the laws the penalties are severe. That's why we have the constitution, to keep know-it-all busybodies like you from trampling on the freedoms of knuckle-dragging, mouthbreathing cavemen like myself and Tim.

It's pretty simple, really. You plainly spelled out many examples of it in your comment. Let me help:

"there are lots of SUV's and other cars with plenty of room for families that get more than 15 mpg"

How do you know how much room I need? How is it any of your business? Oh, that's right...it's not.

"monstrous vehicles that are just to appease egos"

That's some Olympic-class conclusion-jumping there, Laura. Do you watch The View?

"You obviously don't care about anything except what you want Tim. That's the problem with too many people."

Hmmm, like the same as YOU only caring about the things that YOU want??? Thought so. Unfortunately, you think that somehow the things YOU want are nobler and more righteous than the things Tim wants. Don't bother explaining yourself, you can't do it without exposing even more of your authoritarian views, which in turn will give me more ammo.
