Tailing the Komets

Here's a fun topic and this week's

With the signing of Leo Thomas, the Komets have once again signed a player fans love to hate. Who have been your favorite players to hate over the years either who have or have not become Komets. Here are a few to get your started: Scott Gruhl, Tracy Egeland, Kevin MacDonald, Chad Grills, David Alexandre-Beauregard or Darin Smith. How about Joe Nathe, Tony Horvath or even Bob Bailey for the oldtimers?

For us oldtimers, how about some good ole Toledo boys - Paul Tantardini or Willie Trognitz? We also hated Terry McDougall when he played for Des Moines but rejoiced when he became a Komet and cried when he got traded away to Flint. (What were K's mgmt thinking then?!) Dougy should have retired as a Komet!

More recently, I always loved to hate pretty much everyone on Rockford's team, especially pretty boy Ralph, jail bird Watson and potty-mouth Coach Martinson. Then there's always Kerry Toporowski from Quad City days or Tyler Willis from K-zoo.

I could probably go on and on...

Everyone hated Glenn Ramsey the "Great" Toledo goaltender who was a Komet 58/59. Let us not forget another Ramsey the coach of Muskegon, Bruce. Although he won a "True Komet" award (99/00) Personally he is a great guy. But fans only love to hate you when your not a Komet. If you want to get way back there was Ivan Prediger Komets/Des Moines. Than there is always Brett Gretzky the Komets and almost every team in the UHL. This is fun! Has anybody got some other great names of the past?

Like for an example, Fletcher was the home town hero who everyone loves, but when he went to atlanta and came back to play against us and dropped the gloves against Andy Bezeau most cheers were for Bezeau, the home town hero at that time.

Byron Lomow was always my fave to get under his skin as an opponent, but he made himself known as a true Komet and I'm glad to have known him as a friend too after dj'ing his wedding reception many years ago. Ahh, the stories that could be told from back in the day...

I know everyone might hate me for saying this but I have always disliked Steve Fletcher. How can a guy who was a fighter have his number retired and be the most beloved Komet player ever. I understand why the Komet fans loved him. But I think there are much more deserving players that worked harder and deserving the rec more. I hate Fletcher!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh gee i bet fletch will loose sleep now paul d hahaha

So who do u think is so more deserving of a retired number then?
Im not saying that there arent others out there but DONT go saying Fletch didnt deserve it. Night after night he put himself on the ice to protect his teammates by body checking and going toe to toe with guys. His name is not just well known around Ft Wayne either but around the leagues.

I think a lot of you missed the point. Who were guys that were either Komets and went somewhere else to be hated. Or, we hated when they played elsewhere and became Komets. You need the other team to answer the question correctly. There really are a lot of them. Put your thinking caps on. Hey , Paul D get a life. Fletch was a class act, a real gentleman off the ice. He very rarely started a fight and almost always finished them. I am very proud to know him and He is very deserving of having his number hanging high. He was a true Komet as a player and as a retired Komet has never forgotten that fact. That is not one player who played with him that is not glad he was on their team.

"Who have been your favorite players to hate over the years either who have or have not become Komets?"

I give up. You win! I beg your forgiveness. Please don't hit this old man. Lets just call it artistic interpitation and leave it at that. I was having more fun the way I was doing it. It makes you really use your brain. I would agree with most of the names mentioned.

Kometfan I do think it was unjust that his number was retired. I understand why and all. I just think that there are guys that came before him that was more deserving. Just for a example a guy like Dale Baldwin. They both played the same number of years for the Komets. Baldwin would throw punches with the best of them not like Fletcher though. The thing that stands out between the 2 is Baldwin could put and the puck in the net. Fletcher was just a tough guy goon in my book. So hate me or not I just don't think he was deserving. Hell he barley played in the 92-93 play offs when we won the turner cup.

Hey what is with telling me to get a life. Sorry I stated my thoughts. I guess I need to get on my knees and bow down to the great Steve Fletcher. I personally would put Dale Baldwins jersey up there before Steve's. They played the same amount of times in a Komet Jersey. Fletcher did fight more then Baldwin. But Baldwin could be put the puck in the net as well as fight. I was just stating my thoughts please don't skoaled me for it.

All right, everybody back up two steps. You're allowed to have differences of opinion, but don't act like 7-year olds. That's my job. And, yes, Baldy definitely was great. Who do you think taught Fletch so much?
