Tailing the Komets

Here's a question for you

This was suggested by Larry, and I thought it was a good one.

What is the best individual performance you've seen by a Komet, and what's the best individual performance by an opponent. Here's the kicker: You are not allowed to include the John Anderson game from 1991 or the Steve Larouche game from 1994.

That ought to make you think a little.

Everybody enjoy this wonderful weather. I'm off to do basketball.

A couple I can think of right away aren't just one game performances. The play of Colin Chaulk and Kevin St. Pierre in the playoff series against Rockford when the K's were down 3 games to 1 and came back to win was pretty good. Also the 3 or 4 game stretch Sean Venedam had was amazing. Anytime you score hat tricks in 3 straight games is pretty amazing. I think he had 2 goals in the 4th game of that stretch for a total 11 goals in 4 games.

Not one game performances either. 92-93 Turner Cup with Pokey Reddick in net. Won like 24 out of our last 25 games and swept (12-0) the playoffs. Pokey might have been the best goal tender in the world at that time-Don Cherry. MIG line with Butseyev, Shafronov, and Bashkirov. There never was a line like that before or since.

My choice for the best performance by a Komet has to go to 1-0 Joe. Joe Franke was the backup for Pokie Reddick on Dec. 14, 2002. He stopped 3 out of 4 in the Shoot-Out against Elmira. He was 42 years old at the time. Best performance for one game by one individual who had really no business being on the ice. It made the national ESPN news.

I gotta go with the aforementioned Sean Venedam in the cup run in 2003....that dude absolutely dominated with a hat trick and like 6 or 7 goals in a 3 game stretch

I remember 1991 season in Peoria against the RIVERMEN. Doug Rigler got knocked out and got stiches. In the 2nd peroid came out in the 3rd and scored the winner.

2004-05 when, I believe, Venedam has 4 goals in a game after getting a hat trick in the previous two...so 10 goals in 3 games? (correct me if I'm wrong but that's how I remembered it).

I swear that there was a Flint game where Duhart had like 4 goals and 3 assists against us and he blew like 2,358 kisses into the crowd as I beat my komet hat to death on my seat....I said before the game started, the only way we stop Flint tonight is if someone is glued to Duhart and they play him physical,,,,, well no one bothered to notice him or touch him, and he burnt us all night long.....wish I had exact date, and exact stats.......anyone else remember that night?

I could have been having a nightmare too.....never know.

Best performance I ever saw at a hockey game came about 5 years ago when one of my buddies surprised us all by returning to our seats with 8 beers, never spilling a drop...

Still gives me goosebumps!

Bruce richardson taking on Watson from Rockford and getting the snot kicked out of him.

Richardson -- he wasn't afraid of someone a half a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier, True Grit, just because someone or something is bigger than you, you shouldn't be afraid to take them on.

Best by an opponent - NONE they are all a bunch of punk sissies.

I remember Richardson going after Watson... my dad was sitting there shaking his head and saying "What the #@#&* is he thinking, he's gonna get himself killed out there!" I miss those guys... my dad and Richardson...

++ Mightbight, sort of. My first date with my first wife and my first date with my current wife were hockey games. In between there were a lot of other hockey game first dates but they didn't make it past training camp.. :-) Is that a blog foul?

I was there for Eddie Long's comeback after the trip to the hospital for stitches. Don't remember the year and don't feel like digging through a book or two to find it.

Best individual performance by an opponent? Hard to say but it would probably be a goalie.

Just got a signed photo for the boy from Eddie Long....so I think I'd have to agree with his comeback from the hospital to put one away for the K's. That's pretty darn impressive. I've had stitches (50 of them) before, and I did not even feel like going home and going to bed on lots of pain medicine, much less like going and playing the roughest game in the world. :)
