Tailing the Komets

Here's some stats

In 21 road games this season, the Komets have been out-scored 20-13 in the first period and out-shot 212-201. That's not even averaging 10 shots per period. They have trailed after the first period in 11 of those games and will be 3-8 in those games after tonight.

The got embarrased tonight plain and simple. They have now lost back to back games to the two top teams in the league and scored a total of 1 goal. Muskegon and PH are at full strength and so are the K's. I don't know if this can be done, but I would like to know the +/-'s of the players in just away games. Perhaps I will get out the yellow pad and pencil and just total it up.

Hey, I just realized that Guy broke Burton's record tonight... correct? Not that he feels like celebrating, I'm sure.

Yep, 118th career goal.

Tonight, Varone -4, Mironovic -3, Phillips -3, O'Connor -2, Thomas -2, Drouin -2, Schrock -2, Chewdoruk -3.

On the road this season before tonight: Chaulk +3, Drouin +3, Thomas +7, Shaf +8, DeAngelis +4, Dupuis +6, Chewdoruk +5, Syro +6, Huk +3, O'Connor -3, Schrock -1, Bert +6, Rodger -3, Varone +1, Mac +2, Phillips +9, Danko +3, Woodard -4.

Actually, some of the road +/- are better than they are at home.

Thanks Blake I knew you would have that data..I have Drouin +1 and Chaulk at a +3 after tonight's game which I think is very low since they both log a lot of ice time. But what really stands out is OC at a -3 and I will have to check my math but I had Varone at -5, but I will trust your stats over my pen and paper. I know their is a lot of debate on +/-'s but it is what it is. I think it measures productivity of a player to a degree

Missed the game. Why did Port Huron change goalies?

I think Sterling was hurt. Chase said he was down at one point late in the 1st. The trainer came out, but he finished the period. Then he didn't return, so I'm guessing at the very least he tweaked something and didn't want to chance continuing.

Drulia had a gameplan in place that totally disrupted our team. We couldn't even get it out of our zone. It will be interesting to see how Al counters this when we play them next.

Dear komets,

Well, you are at the half way through the season now and you have had your ups and downs, injuries and illness...But now its time to step it up, make a run for the playoffs, time to start winning games on the road, time to start playing with heart and determination. Its time to start beating teams that have given you a hard time during the first part of the season, its time to stay out of the box and start putting the biscuit in the basket. Its time to start playing smart Komet hockey. I believe, do you?

Sincerely,
A Komet Fan!

Only five Komets have played all 38 games so far this season, and oddly enough they make up a full forward and defensive line: Drouin, Thomas, Schrock; Dupuis, Phillips.

Other than the young guys fighting, the box score looked to be full of Veteran penalties. Blake hit the nail on the head as far as this being a major problem that needs to be addressed ASAFP. Age and complacency, the two biggest killers in sports...

Hi everyone, I've just now caught up on my "reading" and feel like I need to comment on a few things.... From a previous post it was mentioned that Muskegon may be looking at dropping out of the IHL and putting a team in the USHL (juniors). I fully understand that this is a rumor, nothing set in stone nor officially commented on by anyone with the Lumberjack organization, but if Muskegon would leave the IHL this league would have a terrible time surviving. The "I" lost part of its foundation when Kalamazoo left and, in my opinion, could not handle another defection by a storied, long tenured franchise such as Muskegon at this time.....the loss at Port Huron was disappointing. The previous game at Muskegon ( a 1-0 loss ) was one where both teams played well. Lots of defense, good goaltending, and a heck of a hockey game. Last night was totally different. NO SCORING, NO DEFENSE, and they were totally beaten in every aspect of the game. In the beginning of the season I looked at the K's roster with anticipation as I thought offense would not be a problem. Proven goal scorers, experienced forwards, and the continuity that comes with players being comfortable with their teamates and the familiarity of the systems in place.... Unfortunately the K's have squandered the chance to gain on the top two teams and while doing that have lost the opportunity to get closer to them in the "loss" column. Please understand that this is not someone who is starting to "panic" ( a favorite word used on this site whenever someone questions the direction the team is taking). I am frustrated though. There are those who will say that the goaltending is better and they would be correct. It is better. Howver, Muskegon doesn't seem to have a problem putting the puck in the net and for the most part, Port Huron doesn't either. As I watch the NHL on Versus, CSC, and on the NHL network, many times the "color" men will comment when a team is struggling with scoring to "simplify" the game. Get the puck to the net, crash the net, and pick up some rebounds and garbage goals.....I'm kind of stumped. I know that Al Sims and the players have forgotten more about hockey than I'll ever begin to know. Great Coach, great players, but the goal scoring has continued to be the problem all year long. Geez, I wish I had an answer.

One hell of a post, Allan. You have asked the question we as (older now) players have been asking forever. How do you start scoring? It has always been said that if there is effort the results will come. I am not a proponent of that line of thinking. As a player, I know how hard I worked and sometimes the puck just wouldn't go in. Squeeze the hockey stick until it became sawdust. Dating myself with the wooden hockey stick analogy.
Earlier in the year some suggested the top teams in the league had become a little stronger. Some disagreed with this possibility at the time. Does that thinking still hold true with the latest losses? Looked like the "K's had turned the corner a week ago. This could be just another blip on the screen. There is certainly plenty of time to "get it right".

It's time to issue new sticks to all forwards and they should sleep with them until the next road game. Old school I know, but sometimes it works...........

Players sleep with their sticks?! Well, then we are doing something right here at my house....my husband thinks I am crazy for letting the boy sleep with his 2 new sticks in his bed. "Joe" has warmed up quick, while "OV" needs a practice session before he gets to play in a game. Good to hear this works sometimes. :)

In college I would bring the bat and mitt to bed with me.....it didn't help the bat too much.....oh well. Defense was strong, the cold weather killed my bat. Summer would arrive and so would my Batting Average.....

JR--With all do respect, big deal! They need all the help they can get. They should put Peter South out on the ice. Flint's fans would probably actually pay to see that.

LOL, someone lit a fire under Dschebig! Good thing you don't live in Flint, or else you may have to change your name to Nellie! All kidding aside, I feel for the fans in Flint. It'd be terrible to deal with losing teams year after year. Look how upset many of us are this year with how the Komets are playing, and we don't even come close to what Flint has dealt with for years.

JR
Thu, 01/28/2010 - 10:46am

The big deal, IMO, is the fact that Flint had 3200 fans show up for that game against Bloomington by bringing in some goons to "right a wrong"... Kovalcik is a known fighter and a guy they may be able to promote and get some more butts in the seats on a regular basis... Then they may be able to pay thier radio guy........
