Tailing the Komets

Here's today's story

The players have some concerns about the style of play as of late. As usual, all they are asking for is consistency. You can read it here.

While I will gave the fact there is a little more stick work, the style of play is 10X's better than last year in the UHL. The NHL style of calling a game is boring and does not work at this level of play..Maybe that is why some players left for Europe they could not take the style of play. If they don't like don't sign up to play it is pretty simple.

I think that's fair. I think what the Komets are saying is that it's gotten a substantially rougher recently even than what it was before this season, which is also a fair statement. I think the games this year have been substantially more entertaining. You never know what's going to happen on any night whereas in the recent past you knew exactly what kind of game it was going to be depending on the night of the week, whom the opponent was and the referee. It's not nearly as easy to predict now, and that's a great thing. C'mon, what other year could Donnie Margettie become the next Chad Grills?

this is probably the best reason for the league to expand by two to four teams for next year. just enough to play everybody to create rivalries but not enough to resort to goon league tactics or boring hockey,

I agree with that completely -- as long as the new teams have the right ownership, somebody who is in it for the long haul and can afford to possibly take a couple of slow years financially to get started.

One of the things I said when this "New League" was announced was that you can't have physical play without goonery. More importantly, the UHL/IHL doesn't have the officiating skills to make these calls to keep the goonery/rough play in check, and obviously the league office has no problem letting things go ala the Mitch Woods stick swinging incident with Ftoek awhile ago. IMO, the league office bit off more than they could chew. They tried to sell this physical play to the players, now they'er starting to see if they can get a refund.

When you think about it, there really haven't been that many problems throughout the entire season. It's actually been handled fairly well. Certainly not the kind of problems that might have been expected. They've only been isolated incidents before last weekend. I'm sure the refs will jerk the leash back this weekend.

I love the new rules in this league. I would much rather see the Hawthorne that let's them play, rather then the Hawthorne that calls a UHL game. People can't have it both ways. If Minor League "AA" hockey wants to survive, they need the rough and tumble play.

the real rough stuff has been few and far between with a lot of good old time physical stuff most of the time. its what we wanted and i think so far so good!

I agree Chuck.

I believe the players were referring to the stick checks/slashes opposed to the hitting and what not. I hope, you don't see that much hitting in these games, and when you do, the player that got hit gets mad.

As far as the stick checks and such, didn't they drop the instigator rule to help "police" these types of actions?? Maybe it's up to the players themselves on the ice to keep the boyz honest.

I like the new rough and tumble style. i'd also like to see a bit of a cap on the league, say 10 teams max. Maybe 8 teams, i really enjoy the six team league and getting to see these teams multiple times, the flint games are great, PH can turn it up a provide a good game this year, Bloomington is kind of a roid, you know, real iritating and its always great to be Musk and Kzoo.
