Tailing the Komets

Jim Hawthorne is the ref

This will be fascinating. Both coaches complained about the lack of calls in Friday's game, and that's never been a problem for tonight's ref, Jim Hawthorne who consistently calls the most penalties in the league. I can't wait to see how the players react to this.

I can never figure it out that I know how Jim calls a game and what he likes to call, most of the regular fans know what he likes to call, but the players always react as if they have no idea. He calls the same things every game, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal but it always is. It's like when Mark Wilkins was reffing. He called the same game every time, but the players always acted like it was completely new. It makes no sense. Knowing how a particularly ref calls a game should be part of the scouting report, part of the players' responsibility as they prepare for the game.

As a player it is hard to go from a game where almost everything goes (holding, hooking, interferance, slashing) to a game where there are 20 power plays. I know that Hawthorne calls the same every time. Everything in the first and second period and almost nothing in the 3rd period, and if a team is down in the 3rd period they will get the PP's.

Come on folks, did you really expect anything else from Mr. Hawthorne? Three 5 on 3 powerplays for Muskegon after the Komets took the lead should tell you just who he wanted to win.
