Tailing the Komets

Know what that was?

That was a sleepy midweek game during the dog days of the season. Not much exciting going on, except for the Port Huron goaltender, so Komets will take the win and not over-analyze this one. It wasn't good or bad, it just was and they were happy with the win and no injuries to start a string of 12 games in 19 days.

Lots of players skating straight up and reaching with their sticks. It was an extremely dangerous game for the Komets because they were not sharp at the start but Port Huron didn't have enough talent to do anything about it. Think that was a poor game? Think about how Port Huron has to see that every night. How awful would it have been had the Komets lost?

They should have scored more, hit more, skated more, whatever. Don't over-analyze it, take the win and get some sleep. Friday will be much better, much more intense and much more fun.

Blake, you are right on the money...with a bit more intensity and few better shots on goal the Komets could have scored 3-4 more goals. Congratulations to Coach Puhalski for career win #500!

I agree Blake a win is a win and we all have analyzed everything from management to how the trainer tapes ankles. The goal is to win the 2nd half of the division. Friday's game is a must win for the K's. I hate to say that just a couple games beyond the midway point, but it is!!! Play-off mentality must be there Friday because we get to play PH again on Saturday and then MC on Sunday. 8 point week is possible if we can get the 6 points at home!!!

I will just be glad to have the interenet broadcasts back. Having to keep hitting the refresh on the score while I was trying to get other work done was kind of rough.
Besides, what good is a Komets game without hearing Bob yell "WHOA LOOK OUT" as I go diving under my desk for cover, and keep me wondering if it will ever be close enough for him to get his bananas ;-)

The flags released their enforcers 2 months ago stating becauce of the rule changes there wasn't a place for them in the game anymore. Look at their record since then. Just, god awful. They started the season with a fairly decent team, but are easily the worst team in the league now....Why would any city support a team like that...Look at some of their scores in recent weeks.

Did anybody hear that paramedics took a PH guy to the hospital on a stretcher? I haven't heard anybody report this, but quite a few fans saw the ambulences.

Congrats to "Johnny B. Goode" on the hat trick and also to Lance Galbraith on the goal! Great game, guys!

And, hey, if we can't change the goal song, at least we can look forward to hearing some Chuck Berry after Goody scores. LOL

Talking to Paul Willett after the game he said that one of his players may have sufferd a minor stroke on the bench during the game. That is probably who they were taking out to the ambulance.
Kind of dissapointed in the hand Willett got during the line-up announcents. Larry wasn't very loud with his name and seemd to hurry through his name.

The hand he got was more than he deserved.

Can you elaborate?

Can't speak for anyone, but I think he is probably referring to Willets sexual harassment charges. I can't remember the circumstances and what not. Probably a google search will be the best source.

Ok. I got curious and looked it up myself. Here is the story from Badjocks.com:

Shannon McAnulty, an employee of the Bakersfield Condors filed a lawsuit against the team and its assistant coach, claiming threats, sexual discrimination, sexual harassment, and loss of employment. The suit was the result of an incident at a party last May where McAnulty claims Condors Assistant Coach Paul Willett used drugs and made unwanted sexual advances towards her. Willett denies the allegations, but has left a threatening voice mail message on McAnulty's phone. Here's an edited transcript, taking out most of Willett's colorful language:

Well....
Without knowing the true circumstances, I think most of us would be a bit miffed if someone made false statements like that about us which could damage both our public and home life. We might not all leave a voicemail like that but if she made up the story about him, I can certainly see why he would have been very angry

Blake,
Are the Flags in danger of folding? I stayed through the first two periods Wednesday, and I was so bored, I left a 2-0 game. It reminded me of Mohawk Valley a few years ago. Remember that woefully pathetic team?

Also, have you heard anything new regarding the financial situations of Roanoke or Richmond?

Just wondering...it took over 20 years to get the Flags back in Port Huron, it would be a shame to see them fall again.

Obviously Port Huron is struggling financially, but they always have. Rick Jakacki does a great job covering the team so you can follow his reports and see anything you want about the Flags' future.

As for Richmond and Roanoke? Let's face it, if one dies wouldn't you think it would be obvious for the other? And Roanoke's joke of an ownership has already given up.

That's why I keep wondering if the Komets will end up in the Central Division next year. I think they'll end up in the East again.

Blake, when is this league (which for the most part is a really good league) do something about some of these people that have no clue how to operate a hockey club...such as Flint, Roanoke Valley, Port Huron....Look at Port Huron, they have been the Border Cats, the Beacons, now the Flags and this since the Komets joined the UHL. I have lost track of how many teams have moved, changed names, disbanded during the past 7 years, but it makes the UHL look bad.

What would you like them to do? Ken Ullyot always said you have to have teams to play. Everybody gripes about how they need teams out East, or in Illinois to help out Missouri, Quad City and Rockford.

Do you really think there are that many people out there with any money who want to get into minor league sports right now, in this economy?

You take what you can get, and if you don't get anything you might not even have a league. Because if you don't your travel expenses go way up and that might cause two or three other teams to get into trouble which might end up threatening the whole league. Has everyone forgotten the IHL so easily?

Shoot, look at all the other leagues, and the UHL has been the most stable over the past 2-3 years by a wide margin.

Once these guys have teams, it's not exactly easy to get rid of them or force them to do something. It's up to the fans to protest or quit going, or put up their own money and combine it to buy the team and take the risks. The easiest thing in the world is telling someone else how to spend their money. I get so, so tired of hearing fans complain that the Frankes should pay for this or that. It's their money, just like it's the money of the other owners. Don't like it? Don't give them any.

And it could always be worse. It could be indoor football.

Hey Blake I don't know if you saw this yet but it's on the cause of Marc Potvin http://www.poststar.com/story.asp?storyid=210032
It's very sad.

I guess in a perfect world the UHL would try and keep a central location of about a 4-5 state region of teams that would be more "travel friendly." Also the rivalries would be much better. I wish they could concentrate more on getting teams in the Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, etc. region instead of going out so far east. Those eastern teams struggle so much each year financially.

Sounds like Paul Willett got himself in a whole heap of poo. He made the mistake of leaving a voice message without thinking first. That message makes him sound awfully guilty whether or not he did anything or not.

Last nights game:
Did anyone notice that the Port Huron goal came without the red lamp coming on. I think it was the same goal judge as last game with some controversy. This goal judge also missed a goal for the Komets last night that appeared to hit inside the back of the net and ricochet out in front of the net. Everyone in section 231 saw it. The goal judge was being distracted by an Allen County Deputy Sheriff that was talking to her the whole period. I think this goal judge needs to pay a bit more attention to the game. I'm glad that we didn't blow the game and lose looking back at another possible mistake or two that cost us.

Mr. Hay for Port Huron absolutely stood on his head last night. He looked like a goal stopping machine in the 2nd period. I can't remember seeing a goaltender do so much that was amazing and lose the game. What a poor display of team defense by the Flags. 49 saves and you get the loss. Brutal!!!

I don't know much about the roster rules each league has or what their financials are but wouldn't it make more logitically and finiancially to redo the minor league hockey system? You have the ECHL stretching from Florida to Alaska. So much for the EAST COAST Hockey League. The SPHL only has a waste of 7 teams, and dips into the CHL areas and I have even seen the CHL (primarily in Texas and surrounding states) is getting a few more teams branching out further west to New Mexico and Arizona. There are 6 teams in decent proximity of the UHL teams from the ECHL and Youngstown for some reason plays in the CHL. Its so far away from the rest of the league its not even funny.

Drop Roanoke and Richmond (who would do better in the SPHL) and convince Toledo, Dayton and Indy to join the UHL and you would have a near perfect league.

I was there when Paul Willett made that phone call. Yes it was a little harsh,(and STUPID to leave it on her voice mail) but he was irate as he had every right to be. If you knew the rumors that girl was spreading.... It was a joke. She was screwing 4 or 5 guys on the team, plus 2 on the arena football team. She should have just let his phone call go because she had it coming, but she is a gold digging wh---e and nothing more.
