Tailing the Komets

Komets beat Flint 6-5

Just a few highlights

* Flint goaltender Sergei Zvyagin was knocked out of the game after taking a shot to the head. Referee Jim Hawthorne did a great job by correctly insisting that Zvyagin get checked out by Flint's trainer.

* Leo Thomas left the game at the second intermission after getting hit knee-to-knee by Flint's Dan Lapointe. Thomas came back to skate a shift at the end of the second period, but sat out the third. He said his knee has a small sprain and he's hopeing to play Wednesday. He said if Saturday had been a playoff game, he'd have continued to play.

* Komets coach Al Sims was not happy with his team's defensive effort: ``I just think defenisvely we were terrible tonight. We've been terrible the last three games at home. It's a combination from the goaltender all the way out to the forwards. We have to focus on it in practice and drill it into their heads. We have a lot of home games coming up, and we need to start shutting teams down at home like we do on the road or we're not going to have much success.''

* Sims also benched the line of Colin Chaulk, Matt Syroczynski and Konstantin Shafranov from playing a pair of power plays when they were ineffective early. They came back to score a couple of goals: ``They came out and responded. Syro especially responded. The benching paid dividends.''

One more thing coming a little later.

Good to hear that it looks like Leo will be okay. I was hoping, but after he didn't come back in the third, I was worried for him.

Here is progress...Flint HAS A TRAINER!

By the way, what was the deal with the sell-out crowd? Normally that only happens when there is a special promotion or at the beginning and end of the season. I might have expected a big crowd with Muskegon or Port Huron coming in, but Flint? And yes, I know it was a Saturday night, but still. Was it spill-over from the Home and Garden show? I even wondered if the Olympic hockey going on right now might have inspired people to come out

Glad Leo is going to be okay.

If only the idiots that ran the coliseum had some kind of clue that with the home and garden show and a hockey game going on that there would be a lot of traffic at 7:00 pm. Why would you not have all the parking booths open? Ridiculous.

I came in on the Parnell side about 6:40 and all three there were open. Maybe they called in sick?

Wendy, I suppose you can get different answers but I sort of wondered the same thing. No special events or large groups recognized. Overflow from the home show? It was nice to see. I suppose there are a lot of fans in the fort who aren't as negative as some of the people on this blog. I think I'll seek cover now :-)

Huge group night, Wendy. Biggest of the year. Also the fact that it was the first Saturday game since Jan. 9.

I had a great parking spot... for the old Wizards stadium! All the parking booths were open when we got there but there was some poor dude trying to direct traffic by the booths who was generally being ignored. Saw a couple of almost fender-benders between people trying to leave the lot and people trying to squish inbetween other cars.

Flint's goalie had a nasty mark on his forehead where it looked like his mask had gotten smushed into his face. I didn't see any particular shot to his head but I don't always have the best angle.

Great to see that huge crowd here! It was a surprise to me also. Flint really was playing well all night except for that 4 minute span in the second period. Good to see a lower place team come in and play well. After all who wants to see boring blowouts all the time?? Nice once in a while but a good strong game by whoever is playing makes it much more exciting for all the fans! Nice also to see a sellout crowd at an IHL crap league game since every other league is soooooooooooooo much better than what we have here. He said tongue in cheek!! Cant wait for the responses to that! GO USA !!!!!!!!!!

Overflow as in "Well, we're already here. Might as well take in the Komets game, too. Hey, I went to your silly 'Home and Garden' show!"

Tim, try watching the games with your eyes open.... Less cheerleader, more realistic hockey fan...

Defense is bad right now... Hope K's can keep this offense going because the way they're playing D isnt gooing to win them any games.

Flints goalie made a great save when the puck hit him high... Hawthorne at that time talked to him while the goalie was shaking out the cobwebs. He then stayed in and gave up two more goals and then went over to the bench asking for smelling salts. Thats when Hawthorne came over and insisted that the trainner look at him... Great job by Hawthorne.

Warner was also benched for a good chunk of the third period after another dismal play... Bertram will be in the negative +/- soon if he stays on that pairing with Warner...

BTW, Flint (aka ft wayne north...lol) does a great job of getting traffic in front of the net...

I always enjoyed the fact that the Coliseum used to have the "Bridal Shower" and the "Gun & Knife" show at the same time. It seemed very appropriate to me.
