I really think Schrock played his way onto the team last night. At least I hope so, I'll be very disappointed if he gets cut. And I think Laise is a lock at this point too. I don't know about anyone else but I can't wait 'til next Friday! Wish I could go to Dayton...

I don't know what to think, last year I thought I had the cuts right, turned out I was wrong! I was for it before I was against it though so that makes me not wrong

I got some video of the Big Snake/Stayzer fight:

I thought I had Brad MacMillan swinging at Kevin Demers, but that didn't turn out.

Still shots of the game are here:

OK, so Al Sims has to trim the roster from 27 players to 20 by Monday according to your article. After watching the two home games but before the road game at Muskegon tonight I'm going to choose the roster and see how close I come. First the forwards: Rick Varone, Evgeny Saidachev, Travis Whitehead (R), Brad MacMillan, David Hukalo (V) but placed on the IR, Konstantin Shafranov (V), Leo Thomas (V), Vince Laise (R), P.C. Drouin (V), Kaleigh Shrock (R), Colin Chaulk (V), Mat Syroczynski. Next the defensemen: Guy Dupuis (V), Danko Mironovic, Brandon Warner, Keith Rodger (R), Kevin Bertram (V), Blair Stayzer (V), Matt Woodard (R). Next the Goaltenders: Nick Boucher, and Tim Haun. The total number of players are 21 but David Hukalo will start out on the injured reserve list giving the Komets 20 and also time to take a longer look at some of the rookies they have kept. The total number of verterans are 8. The total number of rookies are 5..... The tough cuts are Toby Lafrance, Tyler Sims, and T.J. Schneider. This is just my opinion and I know that the roster will change throughout the year ( it always does). I just want to see how close I come. What do you all think?

I think TJ Schneider will make it over possibly Laise. Pure guess, though. Either could make it.

I think both (Laise and Schneider) make the team and one of these guys will be gone:

Varone, Saidachev, or Bertram. It is possible Varone goes on IR too.

We have 2 players on IR....Hukalo and Tarantino.

Haun should make it over Sims. Plain and simple.

Here is the big question for Blake: Any truth to the rumors of Jimmy Bonneau signing in Fort Wayne ? He is a bigger enforcer who can go toe-to-toe with the bigger heavyweights in the league. If he is indeed being brought in, who is going to go to make room for him?

Blake, really you think Laise won't make the roster.

Laise has looked like our best player this preseason. Fastest skater and has a great shot and playmaking ability, you think they might pass on him? If they let him go, he will be rookie of the year on another IHL team this season.

It makes more sense to me to keep a young talented player, and let a local hero go. Sorry to say it, but it only makes sense. Let's get younger and more talented at defense, and lets not make the mistake of letting Schrock, or Laise, or Schneider or Woodard get away to keep a Bertram, or Stayzer, or Varone, or Saidachev. We need rookies and talented ones at that. Let's not make a mistake here.

I would never give up a proven player for a maybe, and neither will Sims. He's not going to give up on somebody who has helped him win two titles, especially on defense. Never happen. Varone's going to score 40 goals this year, and will not be going on IR at the start.

It's not that I dislike Laise, I just don't see a spot for him. Who knows, maybe someone gets hurt tonight and goes on IR to open a spot. A lot of things could happen.

I say keep Saidachev....he got a look from an AHL camp, and the other guys did not. Let's keep that in mind as we make our predictions!

Sims made up my mind for sure last night....Haun is the proven winner. Get Sims out of that net and get Haun in there. Sheesh already! I know it'd be hard and all, but they are both professionals as Coach Sims has said. Prove it, and let the better goaltender stay.

Sat, 10/10/2009 - 7:20pm

Listening to the game, Haun didn't allow a goal in his time in net. Now its late in the 3rd its 3-1 Jacks on 3 3rd period goals by Musky, with Bouch in net....Haun has earned his spot on this team...Sims has a VERY difficult decision to make for the back up goalie position

Sat, 10/10/2009 - 7:27pm

How is it difficult from a coaching perspective? One guy is good, the other is not as good.

And DSchebig, it was so great to meet you last night!

Mark21
Sat, 10/10/2009 - 7:41pm

because one of the 2 is his son...thats what makes it difficult...

I will mark that one down Blake.....Varone 40......wow.

Let's all hope that happens, and lets hope that Laise doesn't goto Muskegon and score 40.

I may be wrong, but how can Tarantino be on the IR when he hasn't even signed a contract? Officially he is not even part of this team. If I am wrong will somebody try to explain the IR to me.

My Pleasure Blueline Baby, They are both good netminders. One is just better or brings more to the table than the other.Tough call no matter which way he goes. I have learned over the years guessing who stays and who goes is fun, That's all it is fun. I quit trying to be the armchair coach. It gives me headaches. I have also learned that Al Sims is a real straight guy. A very good coach and he really does a good job at picking the guys he wants. There is the untangables. What is they guy like in the locker room. There can be no I's on his team. We would like to believe they wouldn't bring any of those types to camp and most of the time they don't. Than they get here and the real guy comes out. It is not always on the ice. Remember that!

So we are going to give Al a story to use when he picks Tyler instead of Haun. I think that might have a reverse affect on the team in a way. A guy does everything he has to on the ice to win a spot, and we are talking about him possibly not being a good locker-room guy? We kept Bertram and Boucher after they fought on the ice in the playoffs.....how was that a good thing for the locker-room. I don't buy this pre-cut floated excuse. I smell a fish. And I am sure if Sims makes the team, then one less rookie will be kept which will mean no Vince Laise, or no TJ Schneider, or no Woodard, or no Schrock. I am not singling you out in anyway Dennis, I just don't like what I am hearing. Pick the best team, period.

Blake probably can comment on Tarantino, but he was most liley made a qualifying offer and is the property of the Komets unless they release him or trade him.....if he is hurt, he will be on the shelf until he can play, or until the Komets move him. I think players offers expire in January and can become open to the rest of the league....I think this is correct. Blake>?

Blake Sebring
Sat, 10/10/2009 - 8:34pm

No, I can comment because I reported on Monday that the Komets were in the process of sending Taratino's paperwork to the league and they were going to sign him and put him on IR. He's working out with the team. Obviously league approval has not come back yet.

As for the rest, it's fun to speculate, but we'll know more tomorrow. I'm not going to try to read Al's mind. It's not like you can argue with the results the coach has produced.

They are referring to Jimmy Bonneau, who played with Matt Syroczynski in Cincinnati in '07-08.
Bonneau's stats via hockeydb.com: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=70642

He's under 300 regular season pro games; the IHL vet cut-off.

No offense taken Hit. I understand what your trying to say. I sure didn't mean to start making excuses for anyone. I was only pointing out there are things that none of us "Fans" see or know about. Those things enter into the process of picking the team. Another thing that we might be missing is the salary cap. It will have some effect who goes and who stays..Just who can we afford. Better yet who will play for what we can or will pay.

I think the key question is this. If Tyler Sims was named Tyler "Smith" who would you keep then? Pick the best team. I've heard the reasoning that they would take in consideration the "whole" picture which means practice and games together. One caution on that thinking is that for some reason there are players who don't practice well, but show up big during the games. I don't know. I'll leave it up to Al Sims and trust his judgement..... I'm not sure why they would bring in a player like Jimmy Bonneau. He is a left winger, apparently not a veteran, and if they bring him to cut Blair Stayzer ( who is a veteran) then they better bring in another sniper too. I would rather have another goal scorer than another guy like Jeff Worlton who just took up space on the roster and the bench.

Bonneau will score & FIGHT in this league/ I don't know what jersey to wear opening night= Woods, Henley or Fletcher?

Blueline Baby
Mon, 10/12/2009 - 6:30pm

mightbite, wear the Fletcher jersey. It's a classic, and always a good one.

I see your points, guys, about the goaltending situation, and Alan, well put....changing the last name is a great thing to do to put it in perspective. Does not change a thing for me. Haun still outplayed "Smith", from his blocker to the tips of his skate blades, in my opinion. It's not that Sims was that bad, he just was not as good as Haun. And I guess it's sort of a moot point now. I think it was an agonizing decision for Coach, and I'm sure glad I was not the one who had to tell Tyler's mom that I cut her son from my team!! But, I think it's very possible we'll see him next season, so we could have this all over again!
