Lol, so it's not stress, mightbite, it's just all heart. Hahaha!

Yeah, 1-0 games turned out really well for us all last year. I miss the offense we had a few years ago. The "We want 10!" chant was always fun. Maybe it's gone the way of the dodo bird.

Alright already, the defense is looking very encouraging. Bring on the scorers.

Going back to the preseason game discussion. If the Komets are having problems with finding a third game to play, then I would start making inquiries as soon as the regular season starts.

Last year they played Dayton home and away as they are going to do again this year. Call Toledo, Chicago (especially Chicago), Bloomington, Quad City etc. to guage an interest. Maybe by planning early, a couple of more games could be scheduled. ( Season ticket holders may remember that last season three games were scheduled and the two at home were paid for as part of the ticket package. It wasn't 'till very late that the other game was cancelled. ( To verify-go back to last season's "early bird" advertisement which came with your bill.)

I'm realize it is probably too late to do anything about it this year. Too bad, though, because with a camp this large it would be helpful.

Preseason games questions and thoughts....
Home games are a loser money wise.
Komets have to sell X number of tickets to pay the "rent" and it is doubtful a preseason game will do it.
If season ticket holders are forced to pay for a preseason game then they aren't happy.
I would guess other teams may feel the same way unless their building lease is different.

Snuff, As a season ticket holder, I don't look at the preseason games that way. To me, I am curious about the players that have been recruited. I find the games pretty entertaining too, as most players are really putting it on the line. ( How many times have we read comments from our blogging friends about "effort".

I have no doubts that the games may not be money makers, but that is all thought out before the ticket packages are printed. I'm sure that the K's are an exception to the rule, as I think there are only a few teams that could afford the notion of playing multiple preseason games at home. However, the K's are one of them and have shown in the past that playing two games at the Coliseum were not budget breakers.

I heartily understand what you are suggesting and your points are valid, too.

It was reported on Cohn's blog a few days ago that the K's were in talks with a pretty proficient scorer who had CHL ties but most recently played in Europe. Cohn was relaying a story that was reported by Greg Rajan. Cohn wasn't sure who it was, but speculation and scuttlebut has identified the player as Ed McGrane. McGrane, indeed, is a high scoring forward who has signed with the Missouri Mavericks.

There have been some of us who have been calling (maybe begging) for the Komets to turn their attention to the offense and get a couple of snipers on board.

We have been told that by waiting until later in the off- season the price of such players would go down. It has been reported that that the K's have numerous "plans" and only by waiting to "see" how one circumstance may affect a totally different circumstance, they are forced to wait and evaluate their situation. We have also been told that by waiting, the leftovers from AHL and ECHL camps may be available and "fall" into their laps. We have also been challenged to name any proven sniper who has signed a contract.

The point to all of this is that if the reports of McGrane are true, then the K's have a pretty good idea of the contract it will take to sign a player of this magnitude. Missouri didn't seem to have any qualms about singing him, and look out, Missouri is putting together a pretty nice offensive team.

While the defense is setting up nicely, nothing announced has been done to provide scoring. Unless there are snipers signed, just not announced, I would suggest that we may be in for a long winter. Just two or three would make this a championship caliber team as the role players are already here and ready to go.

Just my thoughts. I feel better now.

Alan.......Glad you are feeling better. I was beginning to worry about you. Just catching up on the blog and am seeing a definite pattern in your post. Again, glad your feeling better. I am resting easy again.

I think the reason for the K's being unable to find a partner for a 3rd preseaon game has more to do with travel costs than anything else... I am sure that should the K's be willing to travel for that third game, they would find a taker; but they always seem to want that third game at home...

I also believe this team is going to look alot like the Mudbugs from last season (and not because we've signed 3 of them...lol)...

I think we will see several guys who are proven 15-20 goal scorers at the AA level with one 30-40 goal 'sniper'. A defensively responsible team that will give other teams fits, play good regular season hockey; but set up perfectly for the playoffs...

Mightbite, I sure hope the Komets news is a sniper with 30-35 goals a year. I for one am getting a little frustrated that the Komets take a wait and see approach to snipers and scorers when it seems every other team is signing one or 2 now.

I think were all forgetting veteran threshold.

Hit Somebody!!!
Mon, 08/08/2011 - 7:32pm

From the PHPA website regarding CHL Veteran Rules:

A Veteran shall mean a Player, other than a goaltender, who has played in 301 or more regular season games of professional hockey (including NHL, AHL, CHL, ECHL, IHL, UHL, or European professional games in equivalent Leagues).

For the 2010-11 season, each team shall be limited to five (5) Veterans (goaltenders exempt), plus one (1) returning Veteran from the previous season on the Clubs Season Ending Roster.

The Veteran rule will be reviewable after the 2010-11 season to include the addition of two (2) NHL/AHL SPC Veteran exemptions per team.

Chaulk (V), $$$$, $$$$
Smith (V), &&&&, PC(V)
Lapointe, Auger, Schrock
Mele, Krug
Heffernen, McIlrath, Trottier

Frankie D, Cescon
Milam(V), Mango(V)
&&&&, &&&&

Boucher(V), &&&&

So if I read this correctly, if they have a player who played in the AHL or NHL they can be exempt from the veteran limit up to 2 players.

Does that mean PC is exempt because he played in the NHL?

Boucher is Exempt because he is a goalie. And we can just say Chaulk is exempt because he is a returning veteran from last season or could he be exempt because he played in the AHL?

We could have:

1 Returning Veteran
2 NHL/AHL SPC Veteran players
2 Veteran Goalies
5 Other Veterans

That is 10 Veterans if they choose to. How to fit them under the cap.....who knows.

Lots of little loopholes all throughout the PHPA deal as it seems.

The AHL/NHL SPC exemption is for veteran guys currently under AHL/NHL contracts. Not guys who had them years ago or played in those leagues years ago

Mon, 08/08/2011 - 7:55pm

Ok, gotcha.

Either way....lots of creative ways to fit veterans onto the roster.

I guess the AHL/NHL thing would be for a player or 2 that might rehab in a CHL city before going back to the main club...

Anyone else see this little nugget?

Wish the Komets would host one of these and attract Dayton, Toledo, and dare I say it....K-Zoo?

Last year they overpaid for Chaulk/Drouin/Curadeau.

I don't blame them for waiting this year.

We would have one more traditional skater veteran spot open.

Use it wisely please. 40+ goal scorer.

I think we can argue that they overpaid for Chaulk. I don't agree with you at all. He was worth everything they gave him. We didn't have a defensive center, we didn't have a setup guy, we didn't have a leader, we didn't have a powerplay center, we didn't have a strong faceoff player---until we got both lapointe and chaulk.

Now other guys they paid for that I don't think they got the value out of:

Warner, Curdy, Leo, Patrosso, PC, Naurato until they got rid of him.

Mon, 08/08/2011 - 8:06pm

You could make an arguement for Drouin and Curadeau.

But I am sorry Chaulk is worth every dollar he is paid and the fact he won the team MVP voted by the PLAYERS in only half a season shows what they think of him and trumps any of our opinions!

Chaulk IMO is worth more then many skill players because he plays a complete game...while many "goal scorers" are nothing more then perimeter players, won't play in tough areas where they are in danger of being hit.

I realize everyone has their own opinion, but saying Chaulk is overpaid is just plain ridiculous.

As Bloomington coach Jason Christie said....

Mr Snufflupugus
Mon, 08/08/2011 - 9:42pm

I know the arrows will get shot at me but I didn't want him back last year and the money against the cap had something to do with that.

Patrosso...interesting case. Never scored more than 19 goals in juniors. Had one 30 goal season in Port Huron and if memory serves me correctly that was on a line with Mikael Bedard who may have been the best young skill player in the league that year, and someone I would have loved to see the Komets wrestle away from the ECHL.
I don't know how much money Patrosso was paid. But assuming he was paid like a mid range CHL player then I think they got the expected value for him. If they paid him like a top line forward then I will agree with you that he would have been overpaid. As for the others..

Naurato I think fell victim to the culture of playing half a season that surrounds the old guard of this team. By the time he got to Dayton which was a team that worked their tails off every shift he turned into a really good player.
Warner...PC...Leo etc... I wouldn't have brought back so I am with you there.

Jack, it was good to see your post. Hope everything is better now and glad you are resting easy again.

The above conversation regarding the "veteran rule" was pretty interesting to me. I have stated before my thoughts of how convoluted this rule seems. Full of exceptions, special circumstance and such. Two things to remember. 1) While I personally think the chance of the Komets releasing a veteran is slim, this would be the year to consider it, and 2), traditionally and historically the Komets like to save a veteran spot or two for early season or mid season signings. Maybe their philosophy has changed as they have continually let it be known that they want to get "younger".

I still don't know where the goals are going to come from and I am not sure if I think a whole bunch of 15 goal scorers has what it takes to win a championship. Give me nine twenty goal scorers and I would buy into that as no team could match all three lines against them. Remembering that this league plays only 66 games, a twenty goal scorer would score a goal every three games.

Last year I thought the K's started the season with seven twenty goal scorers and hoped Matt Ward would be the eighth. Didn't happen and the K's had to go out and pick up Lardner who connected for twenty-eight. Now he is gone too.

Where are the goals going to come from? I hope the Komets aren't being too optimistic in their signings and think they have the answers already announced as under contract.

Smith 20G 55pts.
Aikens 19G 55pts
