Tailing the Komets

The latest on Chaulk

Unfortunately, there's not much new. Colin was examined this morning by team doctor Greg Sassmannshausen at Fort Wayne Orthpaedics and an MRI will be done on his leg sometime this week. The leg is healing, but this is a precautionary move, according to Komets General Manager David Franke.

``We need this done the sooner the better because the final playoff roster is due on Monday and we need to know if we have to make other arrangements,'' Franke said. ``Once they get the MRI done, they can let him know how much he can exercise on it. Right now he's still on crutches and they don't want him putting any weight on it.''

Franke said he expects Chaulk to miss the final three games this week and likely the first two games of the first-round playoff series.

If Chaulk is unable to play, the Komets will be scanning the waiver wire to look at picking up another veteran center if possible.

If I am reading this correctly and the Frankes will not tip their hand anyway, it sounds to me the chances of Chaulk being ready to play in any of the first round of playoff's is slim to none. We are not talking a little cut here, this is something that more than likely is effecting the muscle in the region and is more than likely sore as H...!!! If he can not go in the first round but be available beyond that can the K's activate him off the IR?

I'm not sure I'd read that much into it. They simply don't know right now, but it's more they have to be prepared in case he can't play. Knowing Colin, if it's at all possible, he'll try to play.

They can activate him off IR in the playoffs and someone else has to go on.

Hopefully Joe and Shawn can fix Chaulker up with one of their inventions so he can play as soon as possible. We really need him. Chaulk is the heart and soul of this team and without him, I'm afraid we'll lose our momentum and drive. Please hurry back, Colin! We need you...bad!!!

An "invention"? I'll pass. How bout Chaulker heals and in the off-season we find him the team he deserved to play with this season. I'd love to see Chaulk play this year, but not at the expense of his future.

..okay..jungle monkey..what team do you think he should play on?

Whew, that one flew over your head Nanci. He was saying that the Komet's need to get him healthy for our team next year with the concentration of putting together a better group of players.

Chaulk is not exactly playing with junk. Little short here and there as compared to to some other teams but its still a playoff team. I think if truth be told, its not "better" you want, but more toughness and entertainment in which you hope makes the Komets better. Nothing wrong with that I suppose but lets not ditch the season at hand.

The Frankes said that Chaulk would miss part of the first round of playoffs. They said at least 2 weeks he would be out. An MRI may show more damage that would change this optimism to season ending.

Chaulk has said to other media members that he cannot put any weight on the injuried leg and cannot step on it with his tip-toes. A deep cut like he has would be very difficult to recover from this quickly. Is his career worth the risk?

Blake, if we were to pick-up a veteran this week, would he be elgible to play in the playoffs? Any certain number of games played for the Komets or such needed to be elgible? Where in the heck would they pull a good veteran out of their hat from this late in the season anyway?

Plus, anybody we find would have to pass waivers, right? Meaning the teams below us in standings have first shot. Right?

Any more Jamie Milam's floating around out there?

This report is not the best of news but its still speculation at this point. All this not so good news could also be meant for Rockford to read too and then Chaulker comes out and pulls a Terrell Owens.

Hope so. Not Owens though. Hate that guy.

How about the guy for Wisconsin that scored the goal after taking a hard hit, didn't give up on the play, went straight to the net, and scored. I'm sure he is out of our league, right.

Well if Chaulk is out for the year then we could sign Milam to a regular contract since he's played in 6 games and then go out and sign 2 more top college guys. I don't think thats a bad idea. BUT I hope Chaulk is able to play because the K's deperately need him for the playoffs. I really hope they don't play him if he isn't healthy though. I can just see Big Snake or one of the other cheap shot artists on Rockford slashing him in the back of the leg.

Too bad Bakersfield made the playoffs. We could use Venny right now.

If the Komets sign anyone off waivers in the UHL, as long as he's played six regular-season games he's eligible for the playoffs. There are always guys available at the waiver deadline because teams want to cut loose guys they don't want. As for the quality? Who knows? Anything is possible.

As for Venedam, is he even off injured reserve yet? I heard he hurt his shoulder again.

Heather

It would of course be awesome for Chaulk to be able to play but he shouldn't risk his career. Amen to the Venny comment lol. That would be nice. All joking aside if Chaulk can't play just make sure to get some who can at least get us somewhere. With Chaulk out who is standing up and being the leader?

blake
Tue, 04/11/2006 - 6:48am

I really don't think that will be a problem. There are lots of leaders in the locker room, and they all realize they need to step it up a little. Don't forget, playoffs are also the time when someone always steps up and surprises you like Stewy last year playing center or Kean playing forward, or Blake Stewart at the end.

I'd like to see Guinn step and show all those doubters what he can do. I have season tickets and all I hear every game from the idiots behind me is how much they can't stand Guinn. It's not like he's the worst player on the team. I mean with his plus 22 rating and 36 points he does contribute to the game. Although I know people have their opinions they should look at stats before booing him.

blake
Tue, 04/11/2006 - 8:47am

Unfortunately Heather, it's always been that way. Fans usually turn on defensemen first, whereas a forward can do the same or less and never hear a peep. Shawn Evans, Carey Lucyk, Rob Doyle, Bob Wilkie. I'll bet I could come up with five more if I looked them up.

Heather
Tue, 04/11/2006 - 8:51am

So what are your thoughts on Guinn? I mean as a fan do you think he does a good job or do you think that we should dump him? I'd like to know your thoughts on how well he does.

blake
Tue, 04/11/2006 - 9:05am

That's a trick question from Hit Somebody, right? LOL. I'm not a fan, but I have a lot of respect for what Rob does to play the game and how he plays the game. I think he and Mike Dombkiewicz have been an outstanding pairing of late. Rob's going to play every game, be plus-25 or so and set a career-high for points, along with being a great leader. Can't ask for more than that. I know his teammates respect him a ton as well.

Heather
Tue, 04/11/2006 - 9:05am

Actually for that matter what is everybody's thought on Guinn?

Heather
Tue, 04/11/2006 - 9:09am

I wasn't saying that you were a fan of Guinn I was meaning a fan of the Komets. I'm not a fan of Guinns but I do think that he does a good job. I certainly wouldn't boo him. There are only a select few players that I would boo and they certainly aren't the ones on the team now. I give them a lot of credit for going out there and doing their best to make the fans proud.

I am on record as a supporter of Guinn. As I have said in the past, he has his flaws as everyone in the league does or they would not be in the UHL. As a UHL defenceman, he is as steady and reliable as you can get. Some fans want him to be a Scott Stevens type and that isn't his game. I think he has done a fine job for the Komets playing his style.

Blake:

Venny is back and playing for Bakersfield after being on the 30 day IR.

Tue, 04/11/2006 - 9:41am

Heather, I was kidding because Hit Somebody keeps saying I'm a fan when I'm not, that's all. I'm not a fan of the Komets. I can't be to do my job well. That doesn't mean I don't respect and get along well with the players, coaches, management, etc., though. I'd rather see them win because it makes my job easier, but I still have to do it if they lose. It's just different.

Heather

That would make sense sorry about that and a great job you do following the Komets.

JUST KIDDING HIT!!!!! ;-) (see I don't umpire for a day and I get all happy lol)
