Tailing the Komets

Mac's message to Hit Somebody

``My dad reads that and then calls me. You write on there that it's a separated shoulder and not a broken collarbone. All right?''

Gulp!

Actually, Mac looked really good at practice today, too. He'll be 100 percent for the playoffs.

A move to the ECHL would also require cooperation, organization, business and common sense on the part of the ECHL, its commissinor and board. So far it hasn't always shown that it is capable of those requiremnets.

They have said no more new teams in their league next season, but they can change their mind. What will motivate such a change? Either love of hockey or love (or need) of money. Like the old IHL in its final years, expansion fees kept it afloat. I'm sure the ECHL is capable of the same mistakes.

Going to that league may be the best move, but it needs to be done with eyes wide open.

If the ECHL is saying no more new teams next year, I can't believe they wouldn't jump at the chance to get a "Crown Jewel" franchise such as the Komets.
That is if the K's would decide to go that way.

I have been reading that the CHL has contacted each team in the IHL about creating a Northern division.... Travel would stay just about the same with most likely a few long road trips out of division. The CHL is pushing hard to become the major AA affiliate for NHL teams and needs more teams to make this happen. The vet limit and salary cap is less; but it is a unionized league.

All kinds of interesting possibilities popping up....

Please pardon what is probably a dumb question on my part....if we switch leagues, why does everyone think that the play (AKA "on-ice product") will get so much better just because we switched leagues? Won't we have some of the same players who were in the IHL if we all form a new division in one of these leagues (CHL or ECHL is mainly who I'm referring to)? If so, are they going to automatically become better players because the league patch on their jersey no longer reads IHL? I have not been on for a few days, so maybe I missed the answer in an earlier post....maybe we won't be keeping anyone from the current IHL and that's the answer. If anyone has one for me, let me know! Thanks!

PLEASE Dont join the CHL!! If that happened I would more than likely end my string of 32 years as season ticket holder.

I don't think most people are suggesting that switching leagues will guarantee better play. I think the thought is most would rather see the IHL stay afloat, but if not the Komets will have no option but to move. The talk has mainly centered on the quality of the league they move to in the event of the IHL falling apart and not so much on the players that will wear the orange and black. At least that's how I'm reading things.

I'm not sure which is the best option. I was suggesting a move to the AHL because if it realigned things, the Komets could potentially be part of a division that included Peoria, Rockford, Chicago. I could see some nice rivalries building up there. DO I think that will happen? No, but I like to argue, especially if it Blake worked up. Keeps me from getting bored to tears while I'm still off work. Besides, he gives me enough grief with his "ting, ting" comments.

That is a fantastic question, Blueline Baby. It's always better somewhere else, I guess.

Chad, BONG! BONG!

Plus, it doesn't take that much to tick me off at this time of year. Too little sleep, days off and beer.

Blueline, I think the style of each league is a lil different and opinion's will differ based on each fan's preference...

The ECHL and CHL tend to be younger, faster, and some will argue hungrier hockey players still chasing the "dream". Some fans like this style of hockey and like to hang thier hat on the fact that they are watching guys who have contracts with higher levels. Others will say that the play is more sloppy and less refined than that of the more veteran laden IHL.

The AHL is obviously better hockey across the board; but the costs for owners is prohibitive.

I think what most fans are looking for is stability. And in stability, I mean being part of a league where losing one franchise would'nt spell doom for the league. Minor league hockey is always in a state of flux; but being part of a league that has 15-20-30 teams is much more desirable to me as a fan than a league that constantly seems to be hanging by a thread. The IHL's model is a strong one on paper that just has'nt translated into success for a myriad of reasons....

Blueline Baby, your question was a terrific one! I have always believed that at the "AA" level, the top teams in each league would have an easy time with the "cellar dwellers" of the other leagues. Conversely the top teams in each league would play a very comparable style of hockey against the other top teams. It would be fun to see that happen. In a very small sense we did have a little of that in the pre-season when Dayton and Port Huron played against a couple of ECHL teams and did very well. (That was pre-season, however).

If the teams did switch leagues, I beleive the K's would put together a roster just like they do now. Many of today's roster would get contract offers.

We have seen, in the IHL and specifically Fort Wayne, players who have been real successful in other leagues and just bomb here. Bt the same token, we have seen players who were great while playing in the IHL and just do nothing in other leagues.

There is no real answer, Blueline Baby. That is why it was such a great question!!

Thanks for answering, everyone....I was not really sure if I understood correctly that that was what everyone was hinting at (that moving to another league would spell better play), but I had that question for a long time, and thought I'd throw it out there anyway. Seemed like the best time with this discussion going on now. :)
