Meat me in the produce aisle

Call PETA -- maybe they can help:

Eating high levels of some soy products - including tofu - may raise the risk of memory loss, research suggests.

[. . .]

Soy products are a major alternative protein source to meat for many people in the developing world.

But soy consumption is also on the increase in the west, where it is often promoted as a "superfood".

Carnivores. Meat. Get it?

Henry Ford is more responsible for the promotion of soy in this country than any other man. He was the Bill Gates of his time. If he announced he was doing something, everybody else followed his lead.

He set up a research lab. They developed synthetic wool factories, because it was getting more and more difficult to get wool for upholstery from Australia, and with WWII on the horizon, it seemed like a great idea.

There wasn't enough wool for military uniforms, either. Building boats out of plywood was a fairly good idea, some navy men allowed, but nobody thought soy wool made good uniforms. They itched too much.

They made plastic out of soy, too. In fact, Ford built a car almost entirely out of soybeans. But the plastic was too brittle to be of much practical use.

Central Soya eventually invented a toaster for soy meal; for years, it was mostly royalties on that, rather than operating profits, that lined Mr. Mac's pockets. Without denaturing and toasting the soy meal, you couldn't use it for animal feed; instead of the chickens thriving, they died of malnutrition. It seems that soy meal naturally has a trypsin inhibitor in it, which means that not only did it not provide a complete protein, it destroyed the value of other protein you fed.

We've known since the 1950s that soy oil makes really bad margarine. It's too hard and brittle. And since the 1960s, we've known that hardening soy oil produces trans fats, which cause heart disease and cancer.

And there are chemicals in soy which mimic female hormones. Many people get really bad flatus from eating soy, just as with any other legume, but with soy, you run the risk of having your breasts get enlarged and tender. You might not mind your girlfriend's breasts getting enlarged, but tender sure isn't what you want, and having your own breasts grow bigger isn't a whole lot of fun, either.

Glidden was a big investor in soy research, but ended up using soy oil to make paint. Then latex came out and nobody wanted to buy oil paint any more.

Henry Ford abandoned soybean technology in the 1940s, but by then, nobody looked at him as a great genius any more. Too bad; that was one of the smartest moves he ever made.

I was at the 4th of July local Rodeo this weekend and saw a tee-shirt on sale that had "PETA" in big letters on top and below that in small print "People Enjoy Tasty Animals", ... I love it.

Weren't we going to see about using SOY as one of those alternate fuels anyway???
Larry...I saw that same slogan on a bumper sticker...I know it WORKS FOR ME.

There was a big fuss for a while over the PETA.ORG domain name. Some guy registered the domain name, and put up a website for his own organization, "People Eating Tasty Animals".

The domestic terrorism organization got their undies in a bundle, and complained to ICANN. In the end, they did manage to get the domain name, but for several years, nobody was allowed to have the domain name, while ICANN went through their resolution process.
