Never on a Sund

Sunday car sales aren't just proscribed by state legislation, they're criminalized. It's a Class B misdemeanor to buy or sell a car on Sunday:

State Sen. Phil Boots, R-Crawfordsville, is pushing legislation to eliminate the regulation, which he considers antiquated. Boots is also sponsoring a bill that would lift the ban on Sunday alcohol sales.

"It seems to me it's another government incursion into private industry's decision to be open or not open on Sunday," Boots said. "It's also an inconvenience for certain people that want to shop on Sunday."

He's exactly right. I'm one of those people who have enjoyed one aspect of the lack of Sunday sales -- being able to walk around and compare cars without getting pressure from salesmen. But that shouldn't be a matter of law that prevents us from buying on a Sunday if we want to.

Leo,

This reminds me of when my wife and I first moved to Lynchburg, VA. We arrived with little but a car and a suitcase on a Saturday. We signed our lease on an apartment on Saturday night and were waiting for a moving truck to unload on monday morning. We had idea what a "BLUE LAW" was. On Sunday after church we went to the Mall to pickup a vacuum cleaner and other things we would need to clean the apartment before furniture arrived. We found the mall vacant as well as every department store. We finally found a person and asked when stores opened up. We were told Monday 10:00 am. However we were told if we drove to Bedford, there was a grocery store there that also had general merchandise.

Retailer along with others finally committed a felony by opening on Sundays. Charges were filed against many stores. When it went to court it was ruled unconstitutional.

In Beaufort, NC there is still a law on the books where a husband can take his wife to the court house steps on Sunday between I believe it was 11:00 am and noon and beat her.

There are many outdated laws still on the books. Some are funny and some just drive you crazy trying to understand how they can still be around.
