Tailing the Komets

With no home hockey this weekend...

... what are you doing to fill the time? How many of you are going to Bloomington or Kalamazoo? It sounds like it might be a good weekend to stay inside and get some things done around the house.

Anybody see former Danbury coach Todd Stirling got five years probation for his part in abusing the UHL salary cap? Hopefully that puts all of that to rest finally.

Brendan Savage has some more on Peter South and the Generals' 11-3 loss to the Komets last week. I know some off-ice officials in FW who will be very PO'd at this because they take their objectivity very seriously. In fact, it's usually Komets goaltenders who complain they feel they get shorted on shots. What most people don't know is that they check shots on goal from a few different angles to make sure they actually are shots on goal.

I believe this is also Flint's first try at having Thursday night home games. What do you think of those? Would they work in Fort Wayne.

I think it's a cop out by South and it's just a "buffer" statement before he gets canned.

Those 8 goals that the K's scored in the 3rd have been everyone's fault except his.

I always liked Wednesday games, but it wouldn't fly in the Fort. We have 7,000 diehards that go to the hockey games and don't worry about high school football or basketball except for a box score. Hockey's king in this town and THANK THE LORD for that!

Might get a Michigan State hockey game in on Saturday to meet up with some friends from Bakersfield. The Komets are up in Kalamazoo plenty this season, so missing a game up there won't hurt.

I already got a head start to the weekend by fixing a section of siding on the garage.

Other than getting the house ready for winter, Kathleen and I are going out with some friends on Friday for dinner.

Either Saturday or Sunday, go visit my elderly mother at the Peabody Retirement Home in North Manchester.

We'll still listen to the hockey games, but I really don't know if I want to watch the Colts play the Titans after watching the Colts implode last week! At least the Bears won......

Well I am glad that the team is out of town for the weekend. I have a ton of work to be done. Friday I am helping a buddy paint a few rooms of his house. Then Friday night I will be at Kaysan's 5th Down for the Hillbilly Casino concert. If you like rockabilly music, you should come check these guys out. They are great, and put on one heck of a show.

Saturday the wife and I have to go to a baby shower. But the dad to be is having a texas hold'em poker tourney, so it won't be that bad! I also have a lot of work to get done around the house before it starts to get to cold. I will also try to watch Purdue football, but I am sure that they will just end up losing.

I had no idea that Big Mac was playing for the Oilers?! Good for him, I wish him the best of luck.

I really like Wednesday games. It makes the week go by so much faster. I don't know about Thursday games though. Maybe if we were a college town it would work since the weekends start on Thursdays in college!

I have to drive the wife to a baby shower in early November.

Not only will I miss the home game on the 8th, but the shower is in Palatine, IL....The invitation did not say if there would be a poker tourney (or any form of entertainment for the men)

I think this is what they call a lost weekend!

As for Coach South's comments about the amount of shots, the Komet off-ice officials are the best in hockey. These guys are constantly checking on shots and have eyes in the sky and at rink level and do not give the shot even if it seems to be close. I am on the headset with them and they don't give shots just to give them. Maybe a few defensemen who actually have played defense for a while is what Flint needs and not excuses. As for my weekend without my lifeblood, I will be dj-ing for the Dekalb High School Class of 1988 reunion at the Dekalb Airport museum. Waiting for the next time I get to see the boys in action at home. Go K's!

For once I like what kometspa has to say. Yes we are checking and double checking shots on goal. If there is any benefit of doubt it goes to the player.Give us a brake there are at least seven different sets of eyes calling shots from just as many different angles. Yes, I think we do it better than any other city in the league. To prove my point watch the shot clock in Kalamazoo. If the puck gets shot over the blueline by the home team it's a SOG. I really do not pay any attention to what the coaches have to say. Peter South is a nice enough guy who should really be in another line of work. He more than likely truely loves the game of hockey. I am not sure that Flint's owners know much however.

birthday party, football party, catching up on sleep.

Flint has a hockey team?

i don't like wed or thurs games. Friday games are really rough with the 8 pm start, i am wore out by the week and can barely stay awake.

This hockey shot count issue has been argued forever. Fort Wayne has always been called out by various visiting teams for not counting the visitor shot numbers correctly.

Let me give you a little history that goes back many many years. When Al was here the first time I did some road stats and we kept OUR OWN SHOTS on goal during a game. In most cases Fort Wayne's was slightly lower then they should have been given credit (2%) and the home team was always higher (9%) then should have been. I even reviewed some road video tapes and counted shots. The same pattern was found.

I always used a double check system of comparing team stats (kept by Don Detter and Ted Rolf) of every type of attempted shot and compared them to what the minor league officials recorded as shots on net. Seldom did I ever find more then 1 shot a game diff., be it the Komets or the visitors. Don & Ted are NOT PART OF THE MINOR OFFICIALS WHO TRACK SHOTS FOR THE LEAGUE STATS.

Considering many of the same minor league officials still take part in counting shots on net as when I worked with the Komets and I am sure they are doing it the same way.

Coach Short is playing a PR game for his own home fans. Fans in Fort Wayne should not get upset. I am sure the minor officials upstairs are laughing about it and shaking their heads at the same time. Some things just never change.

Rest assured Komet fans you have the best minor league officials in the IHL and maybe even all of minor league hockey.

Gee, wonder who was counting the shots tonight.

Sims said he hopes MacMillan will be able to play in Kzoo. It was simply a family illness he had to take care of. Shows the class of the Komets and Sims to let him handle it.

Going to Kzoo to see the Komets and turning around early Sunday to head to Cincinatti for my son's Select Games. Just another long weekend of hockey!
