Opening Arguments

No respect

Gary teachers, apparently overwhelmingly in favor of a strike, say they get no respect:

". . .They feel nobody cares about them and that officials question their intellect by sending in people to tell them how to teach,” Irons said.

Put that together with this earlier story reporting that the Gary school district is the only one in the state placed in the lowest tier, academic probation, based on classifications approved by the Indiana Board of Education. How much respect should these teachers have, and isn't bringing in somebody to help them a pretty good idea?

I also noticed that nowhere in the story is it reported that strikes by teachers are against state law. We might argue about whether this should be so, but the law is there. How could a story that doesn't mention it be considered even close to complete?

It's all about that "silk purse from a sow's ear" thing.

The parents don't seem to care (unless the school system gave out methadone or blunts at the front door).

The students certainly don't care (you have to SHOW UP and stay OUT of JAIL to pass courses...DUH).

I can see the educators feeling the way they do. After all, it's a SELF- ESTEEM issue with the ikds...THEY have to feel good...screw how the teachers feel...they're just there to "teach to the test" anyway, right?

If all the leftards would have kept their fingers out of the "educational pie" all these years, we'd not be having this conversation.
School is not there to MAKE YOU feel good...it's to PREPARE you for LIFE (which is not there to make you feel any better as it is). Life should be what YOU make of it...not what someone makes of it for you.

Educators are winding up much as law-enforcement these days...emasculated, disenfranchised...made to be a shadow of their former selves as to their profession (name only).
Teachers used to be God on earth when we entered THEIR classroom...and we would oft times incur such wrath by being "less than attentive".
Same was true with parents...
Maybe the school admins should let the TEACHERS TEACH...
And the parents should start PARENTING...

Irony can be a fickle friend.

Just like in business a school is only as good as its leadership. It's time THOSE people start being held accountable.

And why is it that in a system where scientific thinking is encouraged no one practices it?

It's almost like they implement new methods and such w/o any supporting data (i.e. removing flash cards). The scientific method has propelled the knowledge of mankind to incredible breakthroughs over the last millenium - it can work for education (and government) too.

Form Hypothesis
Predict Results
Test Predictions through experimentation

We do need to hold leaders accountable.

Well said Mr. Pruitt...
