The no-rules lesson

A school with no rules finds that kids without rules=discipline problems. Boy, who saw that one coming?

Now, in a new book, its current head, Zoe Neill Redhead, the founder's daughter, reveals the school is having to adopt a more disciplinarian tone towards its current pupils, who have been so pampered by their parents, she says, that they no longer know the boundaries of acceptable behaviour.

My dad tells a funny story about his parents who were babysitting (sorry, PROVIDING EDUCARE) for me when I first was learning to talk. My grandfather (this was in the mid-60's) told my father that he and my grandmother had decided not to use the word "NO" in my presence because it might stifle my creativity. Honestly. My father suggested that since I was going to live in a world where people use the word "no" somewhat routinely, that perhaps it would be appropriate for me to get used to hearing it.

Of course, I do think I am a bit stifled but can hardly blame my father for that.
