Tailing the Komets

Notes

That was the largest crowd for a first-round playoff game since 1995... After Port Huron went up 2-0 in Game 5, the Komets out-scored the IceHawks 15-3... Komets out-scored Port Huron 9-3 in the first period in the series... The team with the most shots is now 2-8 in Game 7s involving the Komets... Second time the Komets have been to three straight finals since 1963-65... Referee T.J. Luxmore worked six Komets games this year, and five were against Port Huron.

I thought Luxmore did a very good job tonight letting them play without losing control...

I agree, Luxmore can come back, NO HOBERG!!! You know its a great season when you start the year with a great tan and you're still tanning in the playoffs! No fakebake for me.

Schebig wears pink socks.

Did I mention Hoberg stinks, he is worse than Welker.

Jimmie, luxmore and langdon in the finals, no one else or I'm going to start a petition to can Brad Jones.

Bloggers, take a look at Brendan Savage's article about the Komets and the league at http://www.mlive.com/generals/index.ssf/2010/05/flint_generals-muskegon_lumber_5.html . He makes some questionable comments such as "As for the IHL, if the league is around next year

Excellent job TJ....my new favorite ref. He called the game the way it should have been called, he let the boys play hockey....not overblown, not underblown, just perfect.

The Port Huron Chokers looked awful tonight. After our fast start, I didn't see much life out of them. They really didn't try to turn it into a war, they didn't make it physical, and they didn't really make much of a run at us. I was suprised

The Komets played a great game, so I am not sure how much of the Chokers was us, or just them.....maybe a mixture of the 2???

I kept waiting and actually hoping the Jeff Zehr would skate out for a shift and make that game interesting.....no, I am not crazy, that PH team is not near as good as the one from 2 years ago.....not even close. No Tab Lardner, No Larry, No Zehr, No Carroll.....Who am I missing???

Schrock was awesome tonight.
PC may have given his best "effort" of this season. Wink-wink. He was great.
Bertram was awesome in this series.
OC was exceptional. He is a great playoff player.
Leo is a difference maker.
Syro is so close to breaking out and scoring 5 goals a game.
Hodgman talks a good game out there, and plays good too.
Chaulk still has "it"....I learned how tough he is tonight. Unreal stuff.....
Guy is an oldman, but still is a great hockey player.
Frankie made some incredible plays in this series, would love to see stay a Komet for an extended time.
Chewy is a sparkplug, he goes non-stop. 100% heart.
Hukalo played good down the stretch of this series, his Defense was valuable as always.
Danko is physically solid out there, and is normally in great position.
Bouch is a playoff legend in Fort Wayne....
Phillips played solid.
Rodger, Woods and Warner played their roles well.
Mac and Haun are both great players who will get their shots in the finals. At least Mac will I bet.

Great team effort guys. Way to stick together and pull out another classic 7 game series.

Let's keep it rolling and get another Kup.

I lost some journalistic respect for Savage, he is suppose to report the news not make it(press box incident), maybe time will repair that.

I have a couple questions, maybe you knowledgeable Komet fans can help me out.....1) When doing the "Hey, you suck!" chant, what the heck do you say after the second "Hey, you suck!"? and 2) During the "Money Money" song, what were you guys chanting then? Many thanks in advance!

Chad Ryan

Vanessa, I believe the first answer is "We're gonna beat the he** out of you!"

And the second is, "Hey, guess what? You're goalie sucks."

I don't chant either of these because I'm not a fan when I'm covering games, but they are inventive.

Vanessa, I think I can help you out.

1) For the "Hey, you suck" chant, you say, "We're gonna beat the hell out of you."

2) After the first lyrics in "Mony Mony," you say, "Hey, guess what? Your goalie sucks!" Then there's more lyrics and you say that part again ("Hey, guess what? Your goalie sucks!"). There's more lyrics, and then you say, "Hey, guess what? Your whole team sucks!"

I was teaching some of the people around me how to chant this stuff last night, so I might as well teach it on here, too. :)

Scarecrow, I respect Brendan Savage and I'm thankful he got his job back.

What I have a hard time respecting is this constant whining about the Komets winning. Rules were set up to even out the playing field for the entire league. It is called a "hard" salary cap. The league has to approve new contracts and make sure a member team stays at or below the weekly cap. It wasn't always that way as some teams had some pretty unique ways to get around it. ( Can anyone say Muskegon or Danbury?)

My main gripe when I hear this stuff is that I don't remember Quad City fans bitching when their team was in the midst of winning 50 games five seasons in a row. Nor did I hear the cries of the oppressed when Muskegon was going to the finals in what seemed to be a yearly ritual.

Savage seems to forget the fine Flint squad of just a few years ago that started off something like 19-3. Remember the showdown game in Flint when the K's went up there and lost 8-1? I remember well because the next night a motivated and embarrassed Komets team won the rematch 9-1. Flint had a great team but suffered a whole bunch of injuries which derailed them. Muskegon started a year something like 22-3 not too long ago also.

Everybody who's crying about the K's can just pack it. I remember some lean years here in Fort Wayne. Sometimes things run in streaks.

Hell, we didn't win the league this year. Muskegon did and they were in the finals last year too. I don't hear anyone calling them the "Yankees" of the IHL.

Maybe I'm the one yelling it wrong, but I always thought it was:

"Hey, Hey, Whadda Say? Your goalie sucks!"

Alan, from what I have been told its a "hard" salary cap w/loopholes......... Theres no regulation on where players are housed or for those who get housing allowances, that amount isnt counted towards the salary cap.... There are all kinds of perks that solid franchises can use to lure in players that less than solid franchises cannot. Its not cheating; but it can be viewed as unfair from those in cities that have lees than solid franchises....

I've always looked at Quad City (the UHL version) as the king of dodging salary caps. Heck, they paid guy's housing, got some of them cars, lined them up with part time jobs they really didn't work at, and all sorts of commercials and other paid promotional work. I admired their creativity. Then they totally dominated the league, a real dynasty.

I've always liked Danko but last night it was fun watching him work. There were times he was working on two PH players at a time in front of the net.

Who won the Huber Trophy this year? If my memory is right, it was NOT the Komets....wasn't it Muskegon? So if we "bought" this league, then we certainly cheated ourselves out of a trophy. That would just be silly. ;)
