Tailing the Komets

Nothing new, yet

According to Komets president Michael Franke, "By early next week I think we'll have some information. I will tell you that the schedling meeing and the all the drafts have been rescheduled and will be coming up late next week."

Asked if he had any plans on heading to Quad City early next week, Franke said, "I can't say."

Asked about news out of Flint, "The ownership group is in place. We'll know more within 7-to-10 days."

Everybody have a good weekend and try to stay cool. I'm going on vacation, but I'll be checking in.

It is a person's right to keep things private, and I do respect that completely. Sure, it probably would have prevented people from complaining bitterly about him being on the team, but so long as he wasn't bothered by that, it doesn't matter. I'm just saying that I'm not like that, so it's always a struggle for me to understand people who are. I mean, why keep everything to yourself when there are people out there who really do care and would like to help even if only by offering a few kind words when they see on the street? But like I said, that's his right.

Not sure where the 26% came from, but yeah, it's like anything else. K-zoo said they were hoping to resign some of their players from last year. And other players could still go elsewhere in the CHL, ECHL, AHL, or Europe. It's all a guessing game, really.

According to the Komet preview page published by the News-Sentinel on November 4, 2005 there were 20 players listed to start the 05-06 season. There were eight players who did not finish the season with the K's. They were Damir Brujic, Derek Dolson, Jason Kean (injured), Mark Smith, Shawn Smith, Danny Stewert, Dustin Virag, and Mike Wiggins. According to the Komet preview page published by the News-Sentinel on October 13, 2006 there were 21 players listed for the 06-07 season. There were six players listed who did not finish the season with the K's. They were Bogdan Rodenko, K.J. Voorhees, Kelly Miller, Mike Dombkiewicz (injured), Jonas Gabrielsen, and David Besner. According to the Komet preview published by the Journal-Gazette on October 20, 2007 there were 21 players listed for the 07-08 season. There were four players listed who did not finish the season with the K's. They were Travis Granbois, Adam Hanna, Bobby Kukulka, and Jason Sessa. According to the Komet preview published by the Journal-Gazette on October 17, 2008 there were 20 players listed for the 08-09 season. There were five players listed who did not finish the season with the K's. They were Jason Beckett, Maxime Gravelle, Jay Holladay, Brian Boulay, and Dominic Osman. The percentage actually comes out to about 28% and I can't remember for sure if I should have added Jeff Worlton to the first list. I know he was released during the season but I can't remember which one. I guess the point is that most years the roster is an on-going piece of work and rarely does the final season roster look as it did in the beginning of the year. The coach for the 05-06 season was Greg Puhalski, the 06-07 season was Pat Bingham, and of course for the 07-08 and 08-09 seasons was Al Sims.

Dang, Alan, either your love of stashing/reading old newspapers or your ability to contain vast stores of useless knowledge in your head on the off-chance that you may just get a chance to use it someday both amazes me yet again. I'm telling you, could be a huge career in journalism for you.

Wait! Are you really the Schwab????!!??

Alan

No, I'm not the Schwab but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

All I know is that I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night and some dude had a massive party going until the wee hours of the night, barely got up at the crack of noon today, I couldn't sleep because of it.

You weren't invited, Burgee?? I can't believe it was even a party without you there! Alright, I have to finish making these reservations... So you recommend the Holiday Inn Express??

I try to tell everyone its not a party until the short fat balding old dude arrives.

No offense Mouse43, but that signing has been known about for over a week now. It may have just showed up in the paper June 30th, but it was reported last week.

Well, I appreciated the link Mouse43. I usually don't keep up with news from all the other teams, but how Dayton comes together this year does interest me. Cool to see the Bombers former captain come on board. That does make a bit of a statement. :)

Regarding Alan's figures... Oh, okay, I get it now. But actually, if you are just counting people that are signed in the off-season, the percentage would be much higher than that. A lot of players get cut long before opening day. And in the case of this dispersal and expansion drafts, it's all a crap shoot, really. There is no guarantee that any of the players picked up will be a part of the teams that drafted them.

Alan updated the naysayer blog on a couple more teams leaving the double aa market, does that make an 8 net loss for the year, its a buyers market this year and not a players

Alan

Absolutely correct Wendy. A team can sign a lot of players to come into camp. The names I provided were players on the opening day roster. Like I said, it was only to show the fluidity of the rosters from opening day to the beginning of the playoffs. Burgee refers to a blog I put in the other blog site where I stated that the CHL announced that the New Mexico Scorpions and the Oklahoma City Blazers will not participate in the 2009-10 season. New Mexico is in trouble but it looks as if Oklahoma City is going to go to the AHL in 2010-11. This is particularly bad for the CHL as their league is really spread out and Oklahoma City has always been the franchise that leads the CHL in attendence.

Wendy

Fluidity, eh? That's one word for it! And last season was about as "fluid" as I could accept.

Yeah, interesting news out of the CHL. Oklahoma may just be going to the AHL, but it isn't like they haven't been losing teams too. It makes me wonder what state minor league hockey will be in next year at this time. Teams can't keep dropping at this pace without ramifications, and we're getting close to that tipping point.

And speaking of Blake, what happened to "I'll be checking in"?

remember the goal of the new ihl.....an affordable league that travel between cities is reasonable , a blueprint that all of minor hockey should follow to keep costs down. things are finally starting to happen and more and more cities will check out the ihl. other leagues will have to follow the blueprint if the economy still stinks.

Yeah, I think you mentioned that when I brought up my crayfish dissection story once. I never did say what happened. I cut it open, but as usual, I couldn't identify a single organ. So I took the dissection stick and stirred its insides into an unidentifiable mush. Then I threw it in the trash before the teacher noticed and memorized the organ diagram in the text book so I could ace the test. Good thing I never became a doctor, eh?

I'm kind of wondering what is going on with the Flint franchise. We have heard, and I believed, that everything was fine and that a "terrific" new ownership group was on board. Up until now I have had faith that everything would be revealed soon. Now, however, I'm starting to doubt it a little. On the bright side they did take part in the dispersal draft. (Someone had to make those picks). Maybe they are not going to announce things until the question of who will own and run the building is settled. On the negative side it is July and no announcement has been made. ( I mean, really, something needs to be done quickly). Then, and maybe this is the paranoid side of me coming out, the IHL said it would release the schedule in a couple of weeks due to some "tinkering." That really isn't too unusual but maybe the "tinkering" is they are making two schedules, one with and one without Flint. Maybe someone has some information I haven't heard. I would encourage the IHL Board of Governors to make some statement regarding Flint very soon.

Alan, I agree with you 100% on the Flint situation. Never thought of the two-schedule thing, now my paranoid self is gonna wonder about that, thanks a lot! :P I lurk on other boards and I've been hearing that the new ownership situation in Flint is "unusual" but nothing else. Maybe some news will be forthcoming this week...? *crosses fingers* Is it October yet?

They just met on the schedule last week, they do it by hand, I imagine once they come up with the schedule they need to verify it with the arena?.?.

All 7 teams are in this year, that's good enough for me.

Its a buyers market for the teams this year, fewer teams more players available.

Great day to work on the tan, talked to ed zackery today, he was out walking his dog.
