Tailing the Komets

O'Connor suspended indefinitely

The final determination to be made on number of games once medical documentation is sent to the league later today.  He is definitely out for Wednesday's game.

No news yet on the Komets' asking the league to review Les Reaney's hit later on O'Connor.

I think CHL doesnt care about the Komets

I hope the Komets use this to their advantage. Obviously O'Connor shouldn't have been suspended and who knows if anything will happen to Reaney. If not the Komets should hold nothing back. I wonder if this suspension happens if it had been one of the Rush players who is average and not their best player.

I figured they would suspend him, now the CHL has to suspend Reaney because his hit was just as bad and dangerous. If they don't then the K's would have gripe.

If you look at the Torres hit from last night it is much worse than OC's.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=560159

Here is what the NHL has to say about that one.

"When Rule 48 (Illegal Check to the Head) was unanimously adopted by the General Managers in March 2010, there was no intention to make this type of shoulder hit to the head illegal. In fact, at that time, we distributed a video to all players and teams that showed a similar hit on a defenseman by an attacking forward coming from the opposite direction behind the net and stated that this is a 'legal play'.

"This hit meets none of the criteria that would subject Torres to supplemental discipline, including an application of Rule 48: He did not charge his opponent or leave his feet to deliver this check. He did not deliver an elbow or extended forearm and this hit was not 'late'."

This call is bull crap they are trying to control the komets and stop us from going any further and if Reaney doesnt get in trouble for his hit we will know the chl is out for the Komets! Urg

That just shows you how bad the ref was that night there is no way he could have missed that hit. I still believe they have to suspend Reaney because his hit was also to the head.

I Wish The CHL Would Learn How 2 Control A League, & There Refs 2 Learn How 2 Call 1. Complete Bullcrap CHL.

Obviously everyone is upset and no one has crossed the boundary yet, but please take half a second and consider the language before someone goes over the line as you post. Thank you.

Its the correct ruling people... like it or not. There are a couple of still frame photos on the Rush CHL forum page that clearly shows that it wasn't a "shoulder to shoulder" hit.
Indefinite is never a good thing, which likely means O'Connor is done for this series.

Also Menei isn't even making the trip to Ft Wayne for Game 3 and 4 (if necessary) He is staying in Rapid City

Clearly there has to be a suspension coming to Reaney, for his hit on OC.

CHL is pathetic! No way is that hit suspension worthy. There is no way the chl is going to allow the komets to be successful and this really proves it.

Okay, fine. O'Conner's hit was bad and got him suspended. But how is Reaney not suspended yet? Because O'Conner wasn't knocked out of the game? What absolute (hogwash)! The hit was bad and resulted in an unfortunate injury, but how can you then turn around and condone a similarly bad hit from behind, into the boards that broke a player's nose. Because he had it coming? That should make it even less okay because O'Conner was clearly a target at that point so there is little doubt that there was intent to injure.

These Rush fans (and the coach) are the biggest bunch of whining hypocrites I've ever seen... screeching for a suspension for a player with 38 PIMs all season and ho history of dirty play yet turning a blind eye and whistling into the wind to their own retaliatory thuggery that occurred throughout the remaining 57 minutes. What a bunch of jokers.

did any of you even watch the game. that was clearly a rule 48 vilolation. not to mention on the rush's leading scorer who was coming off a hat trick the night before.

I won't get into a name calling or other such match with any Komets fans, as I don't feel you should lump people together. However, I will say the Rush are no stranger to suspension being handed out -- to players with no history of dirty play -- and a third of the minutes listed for O'Connor.

Do I think Reaney will be suspended, most likely a game -- he's no stranger to the league -- I saw the hit, and do to all of the circumstances in the game, this will be the way the CHL "evens" things up.

I did my lashing out on this already elsewhere, but now I'm gonna take the opposite side of the argument. If the hit had happened to Lardner, like the Rush's coach said, we the fans would be out for blood.

That said, is this really surprising? No. Was it the wrong call? Maybe. Should Reaney be suspended? YES.

Oh, and I support the "Punch Colt King in the face" movement, but alas, none of our guys will ever remotely look to try.

One last thing, I would not be surprised to see Curadeau (Cura-noshow has appeared again) be benched in favor of Mele.

C'mon K's, I still believe.

Sorry, Kuck, you say you're not trying to start a war and then come on here with a name like that? Try again.

TERRIBLE! What a joke...Let Reaney play Wednesday so they can handle it like men. If he wants to play dirty and ram a guy head first into the boards we can return the favor. It's obvious a monkey could do a better job at handing out suspensions for the CHL than the bafoon they've got in there now. I'm not one to blame the refs/league but that is just a horrible ruling...Did they watch the same video as everyone else? Something Ive learned this year is if you cry to the media, the CHL will give you whatever you want...Pathetic

I was at the game and what I saw in game 2 was the referee tell that punk King to shut up and go back to the bench...not once but at least 4 times so your coach sent a relief whined in and he got told to back off... So yes. I saw the RC whiners in person. Yeah,PC yacks alot but he gets ignored alot too ... RC players just wouldn't give up complaining about everything!

I still think theres a very valid argument that if Menei was properly wearing his helmet he would not have a concussion right now. His chin strap being loose allowed his helmet to go flying off allowing his head to hit the ice with no padding but why should a player be responsible for his own equipment. If Menei is not injured there's no suspension, guaranteed.

Suspending on the outcome and not the action is 100% wrong

ok, sorry about the last name that was out of line. what i was trying to say is that both teams did questionable acts in the game. did o'connor try to injure menei? it did not seem like it. but either way menei might be out for the rest of the season. did reaney try to injure o'connor? more than likely with trying to avenge the hit on menei. as for the rush complaining, your team did just as much...

So... Seriously, was oconner just supposed to let him waltz in on boucher because he wasn't aware of where oconner was on the ice? That's an open ice play . Quit trying to take the physicality out of our beloved sport. Its what makes it the greatest sport on earth

Absolutely agree with GM. Punish the action, not the result.

But the NHL is no better... they let Raffi Torres off the hook today after leveling Seabrook in his 1st game back from a suspension for the same offense. Apparently, Seabrook didn't bleed or stay on the ice long enough.

The lack of consistency is maddening...

This suspension is totally appropriate. It should be a lengthy one to say the least. The hit had only one intent and that was to injure. The hit that O'Connor made was premeditated, he needed to be the hero. Since they couldn't contain Menei the night before. Why would have this happened so early in the game? To try and send a message? Contact was made with Menei's head, he was knocked out. Now he has to suffer the consequences of a concussion, which isn't pretty. You think the league is out to get the Komets, give me a break, are you serious!

If Menei is properly wearing his helmet, he's not injured. I'd love to have a discussion who hands out the suspensions for the CHL. That was one nice thing about Richard Brosal and Brad Jones, they had no problem talking to the fans. The various rulings the CHL has made this year make no sense what so ever, started in the preseason so why should the playoffs be any different.

RobC
Mon, 04/18/2011 - 6:53pm

I'm not one who's going to say suspension isn't appropriate. Contact to the head is a point of emphasis recently and this qualifies. But your continuing insistence that this was premeditated by the team or the player is just laugh out loud ridiculous. O'Conner is not the guy the Komets would send out to do that kind of thing even IF the team were out to send a message. The Komets had Jon Mirasty on their roster for the last third of the season and Sims practically refused to use him... he's not the kind of coach who likes to engage in that sort of thing... a source of much consternation for some fans here.

There was perhaps some emphasis to be more physical and aggressive, but to take out your best player? Why don't you take your own advice and Use your head...
