Watching the Komets Marathon on Verizon Ch. 25.....Game 5 vs. K-Zoo....Hodgman was robbed by Carroll....it was a 3rd period goal that went into the back of the net and out in between the legs of Martin. It didn't end-up mattering, but holy shnikeys...that would have been huge if we had not won the game. Also, same play O'Connor got cheapshotted and no call. That game reminded me how bad the officiating in the IHL has been in the playoffs, and for that matter all year and last and the previous, and before that and so on. How can some of these guys continue to have jobs calling games? Awful. The players suffer because they can't know from game to game or second to second what constitutes a penalty because of the inconsistant calls from ref to ref and game to game and minute to minute and second to second.

Brad Jones is doing a fine job though....

Attention "Hit Somebody" If you will put together a resume I will personally give it to Brad Jones. Every year the IHL is looking for compentent referees. One's who can be consistant and make "Great Calls" all the time. I feel since you have all the calls down pat (at least in your mind) you would do a great job. I would caution you that it is not as easy as it looks. But, you never know you could be the next Jim Hawthorne oops bad choice, sorry! Maybe a Sam Sisco. The IHL could sure another one just like him. Think positive you just might make the grade. Go for it! I promise to only say nice things about your officiating.

I understand not being able to see everything as it's occurring, God knows I miss plenty at the games, but the times where the refs are staring right at something and don't call it, then miss 3 other offenses because they are bickering with the players and looking backwards as they skate down the ice are the ones that bother me. I think this is the first time I've actually see someone that was a fan of the refs of the league to the point he stood up for the refs. I will agree though, hindsight is 20/20 and watching something on tv after the fact is much different than in person in the heat of battle. In any event, it seems you have to take what you get from whichever type of ref there is on any given night and whatever his mood is that night. Luckily we have smart players (most of the time) and a smart coach that helps everyone adjust appropriately.
As far as the Orange Out, I'll have my normal home jersey on that I wear to every game. There is some orange on it. I'm too superstitious to wear anything else. Can't wait for tomorrow night.

Dschebig..........Whatever.

If you think the refs in this league are consistant in their calls, then you would be the only one that thinks that. I was simply commenting on the game I was watching and it reminded me how awful the difference between each of the games in the playoffs were from ref to ref. Game 5 to Game 6 was like night and day. Hoberg called 2 holding the stick penalties against the Komets. How is that whistled 2 times in a game 6 of the playoffs and maybe 4 or 5 times all year during the regular season?

Sorry I touched a nerve in you Mr. "Defender of Brad Jones." Why don't you jump on the other 99.9% of the fans that think these refs have been poor at best from game to game.

Does the IHL have a "this is how we call a penalty" manual? My point being, the refs should pick if they are going to call all the penalties, or if they are going to swallow their whistles. Not a little of both depending on the scoreboard and the period they are in. And it shouldn't be Langdon calls 2 total penalties and Hoberg calls 62 penalties.

Back to my original point.....how can the players know what is or isn't a penalty if these games during the playoffs, mind you, are called this differently from second to second.

Do I want a ref job? No. Did I ask for one? No. Is this a blog where you are allowed to voice opinion about Komet games? Yes. If my opinion is that I think the refs have been terribly inconsistant so I should send my resume to Brad Jones because you think that my opinion requires me to do so.....whatever.

You can have the opinion that you are a Referee Apologist and that you feel deeply sorry for them and so on, I respect your opinion, but you don't have to snap at me because I think they stink.

Sorry to have been watching the Komet Marathon and commenting on this issue as Tim and Randy were making the same argument that I just made as well. I think they sent their resumes to Brad Jones so you won't have to bother delivering those 2 for them.....LOL

Hockey fans in every league hate the refs and think they are all idiots. It goes with the territory. But I will say that I think there is less consistency from one ref to another in this league. We need refs who make equally bad calls ALL the time. :D

I think that two refs work well in the NCAA and NHL. They work together on penalties. In fact the NCAA game I saw they actually would discuss calls. They also had replay which was cool as well. Baby steps here, how about two refs next year.

I didn't mean to offend you or anyone else. I was just trying to make a point that it is not the easiest job to begin with. On any given night any and all ref's can have a bad game. I do not think God has created the perfect ref. At least the IHL hasn't found him/her yet. Remember when you take on Brad Jones. He was a player and a coach before getting his present position. I work with them (Ref's) every game. I also officiated baseball for 25 years. Feel free to hammer them you don't hurt my feelings. Your ticket allows you to do just that. I don't really defend them as much as I understand them. I try to be fair. Some are better than others thats for sure. I have not found even one who will not discuss his calls with me after the game. They are human and they know if they blow a call. Lord knows they do that's for sure. "Perfect" no sir! none of are. They don't even call what I think they should. Just trying to pass along some insite to Hit Somebody and relieve your stress. Enjoy the game and Go Komets!!!!

Are you one of those GOAL JUDGES?

Dschebig
Thu, 04/30/2009 - 7:07am

No, I am not, but I do keep score. I have learned the value of never getting to carried away with myself or any official. I do have respect for those that do that job. Do I like them all? NO. I just have appreciation for what they are asked to do. It is a tough job on any given day. The championship series just make it tougher.

Thu, 04/30/2009 - 7:38am

Didn't we just have an entire topic on picking who should be the ref for Game 1, and nobody was able to come up with any concensus? What's that tell you? It's an impossible job. It's set up to fail because one man can't see everything. My particular pet peeve is I'd like to see them one one dive every first period for a while and then we'd never have to worry about them again. These are the best referees who are available doing the best they can. Whom would everyone like Brad Jones to hire? You say he needs to get new blood, and he went out and got a lot of new blood. Now you want to get rid of all of those. It's not always possible. The amount of up and coming referees is likely shrinking not expanding.

And even if he could get NHL-caliber refs, you'd all still be griping about them. What would hockey be if you couldn't complain about the refs? Indoor football? Everyone used to complain about AAA refs in the old IHL.It's just part of the game and the refs understand that. Too bad the fans don't always.

RunningKomet
Thu, 04/30/2009 - 8:04am

Blake: Let's leave the indoor football out of this. If it was anything like that, at least the games I've seen at the Coliseum with whatever the team is called this season, my seats would definitely be up for sale again. This is a hockey town, let's leave it that way. As far as the refs go, I wouldn't want to do it. Even after they do make a call in favor of the Komets, the fans still hate them for the calls they missed 3 games ago. The only reward, not getting cussed at for a play. It is what it is and we have to deal with it. Good blog war going on this one though :) Don't get me wrong, I'll be yelling at the refs each time they don't make a call that me and my TOTALLY UNBIASED section think they should. In any event, enjoy the game tonight everyone, and GO KOMETS!!

If the IHL refs were really good, they wouldn't be in the IHL. They'd be in the ECHL, AHL, or NHL. Keep that in mind -- it's the minors for the refs too. Even though it sucks when they blow the easy calls.

Just saw that Sam Sisco is retiring this year from the OHL. Also saw that both Langdon and Hoberg will be officials in the OHL finals series. No wonder they can't keep up with the rules for 2 different leagues. BTW, still can't believe who will be the ref for game 2. Let's just say we haven't seen him in a while and he called one of the worst overtime games in history last year. JS

Thu, 04/30/2009 - 2:11pm

Searle.....awww crap!!! Better start resting my vocal cords.....!!! Sorry Mr. Schebig, but that guy is an idiot. He is the ref that cannot call anything without calling a conference for 15 mintues to sort it all out. Hope everyone packs a change of clothes and a pillow for that game....8 oclock start means we won't be out until Sunday morning.

Blake
Thu, 04/30/2009 - 2:30pm

LOL, Hit, you're killing me here. You would have said that if they had said Dan O'Hallaran was coming back to call the game! Seriously, name one referee you've thought has done a good job. LOL. And that you've mentioned on the blog or in public where others could actually hear it. I'll bet you're like Fonzie in Happy Days when he tries to say, "I was wr...., I was wrrrrrrr.... I wasn't right!"

So, who would you want to call a game?

And John Searle did a fantastic job in Game 6 against Muskegon and Game 4 against Port Huron last year.

Blake
Thu, 04/30/2009 - 2:45pm

I don't mean to pick on you only, Hit. (You're just such an easy target. LOL. And I saw that with all respect because I know you like to banter back and forth. You and D. Schebig would be best buds if you ever met.) If Searle had called everything in that game, like say a Ryan Carroll or Jim Hawthorne, everybody here would have been screaming that they didn't pay to see the ref work. They can't win so they just have to call the game the way they see it. And if I know how John Searle calls a game and I know you know how he calls a game, then so should the players. Simple as that. It should be part of the scouting report, and it is.

Chill out HitSomebody It will be what it will be. Just as long as it's a Komet Victory. Kinda poetic isn't it? Hey! I did say Kinda.

Thu, 04/30/2009 - 3:06pm

Bob Langdon does a good job....wow...I said it....not so bad. I guess it goes with the territory giving refs a hard time. It would be hard to call a good game. I actually like the refs that swallow the whistle and only call the calls that would influence the outcome of the game or that are so obviously intended to hurt someone, that you must call it. I just don't like the refs that call a holding the stick call, and the next shift a guy gets his head taken off with a highstick in front of the ref, and no call. That is what gets me.

Hey Super Fan...at least I am positive about the team and sticking it to the refs....it could be worse, right? LOL. You have to take the good with the bad.

The official score-keeper of the Komets is awesome though. He is the best in hockey. What is his name? I would bet anything we would be best buds.

Bob
Thu, 04/30/2009 - 3:27pm

It could be a lot worse....Langdon does a good job of officiating for this level of hockey.

Blake, are the officials for the Finals assigned by the IHL because they earned it, like in the NHL?

Dschebig
Thu, 04/30/2009 - 3:56pm

We will both be xxx make that we are GREAT Komet fans. Bob the referees are assigned by the IHL. They have been rated all year at each game. The coaches fill out a sheet every game. They are then compiled and the top rated guys are assigned to the finals. At least that's the way is is supposed to work. It really all boils down to the players. If they want to play hockey and stay out of the box they will. If they have to hold, hook, slash grab sticks and/or take away scoring opportunities the penalties are going to get called. I left out loose your cool like Rammer. I still think he does not finish game #2. Enjoy the game I am leave in 5 min. GO KOMETS
