Opening Arguments

Out of the closet

I wouldn't want to cast doubt on the Rev. Haggard's sincerity, but this sounds a little, um, desperate:

One of four ministers who oversaw three weeks of intensive counseling for the Rev. Ted Haggard said the disgraced minister emerged convinced that he is "completely heterosexual."

Haggard also said his sexual contact with men was limited to the former male prostitute who came forward with sexual allegations, the Rev. Tim Ralph of Larkspur told The Denver Post for a story in Tuesday's edition.

"He is completely heterosexual," Ralph said. "That is something he discovered. It was the acting-out situations where things took place. It wasn't a constant thing."

I know I'm heterosexual because that's what I've always been; it's part of who I am. If I said, after intense therapy, that I "discovered" my heterosexuality and was now "convinced" of it, I expect more than one person would suspect me of being in denial. But I guess straights can come out of the closet, too.

For someone who only two days ago completed the drive-thru Super Value Rehab and feels now able to come to terms with your own demons; why would you question Rev. Haggard's? Maybe you are in that river in Egypt.

Does Mike B. know something we don't? Not that I'm prying, I just don't get the post.
