Pet friendly

Dsc00098_5 In case you didn't get the alert, today is "Take Your Dog to Work Day." Apparently, one in five U.S. companies allow pets at work, because:

Millions of Americans believe pets on the job lower absenteeism and encourage workers to get along . . . Pets build bonds among workers and clients . . . Pet-friendly environments can pay off in a competitive job market . . . etc., etc.

I've thought about asking if I could bring my cats, Dutch and Maggie, to work, but I dunno. For one thing, it would be like working with your spouse -- a little too much togetherness. I would miss the exciting homecomings I have now in which I am greeted with unconditional love the minute I open the front door. Dutch: "Hi. Where are my treats?" Maggie: "Hi. Where are my treats and Dutch's treats that I will steal half of?"

And I don't think I could stand getting the help at work that my kids give me at home. Oh, may we help you read that book by sitting on it?  May we help you type that post by walking across the keyboard? May we help you eat that sandwich by staring at you until you give us half, since it has been A HALF HOUR SINCE YOU HAVE GIVEN US TREATS? Pet-friendly environment. Uh-huh.

(The photo, by the way, does not show Dutch and Maggie loafing and being lazy. They are "contemplating the issues." Natural-born editorial writers.)

Yeah, I know all the downsides, but the upside outweighs all those. My cat sleeps most of the day in a chain right beside me - within arms reach to pet and talk to whenever I'm working on a problem. What does concern me from time to time is that, on occasion, he knows the answer, ...
